Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Dont get me wrong. In all likelihood the deputy would have been either Kohli/DK/Maxwell. My point is do it when you sub out the captain.

Nominating VK as full time captain instead of Faf therefore doesn't make sense.

What the impact sub has also done, is brought to the fore the 'non-playing captain'. Largely expected that CSK will employ this tactic sometime this year, if Ruturaj is asked to lead instead of MSD. From a CSK perspective, I feel Rahane might just step in for Dhoni if he is subbed out
If they sub out the captain, because he's not fielding, you'd use your sub immediately if you lose the toss and bowl first. (Or you'd have the captain saying, well actually I might not be playing.) Then he couldn't bat. So, Kohli would be captain and then they'd name the side with Faf as sub or in the XI.

CSK bat deep, so having an extra batter releases a lot of pressure on others. They look a really good batting side.

I’ve seen this same side not take advantage of the batting depth so many times in the past so seeing them be this bold after ages is really pleasing.

In two consecutive mega auctions they’ve signed a world class overseas batter for peanuts. Other teams are really missing a trick by not trying to drive the price up at least for such CSK targets.

Well you have teams with a plan and then you have teams opening with Sunil Narine.

And a team picking Jason Roy and batting him in a position he's batted in once in 200+ matches
Context is key. Roy hurt himself in the outfield and couldn't come out to open, so Narine is opening instead. Although, if Roy couldn't bat I'd have thought they'd sub him off.

This Rahane is someone else.

Man even struggled to score in Ranjiis this season.

Turned into a different animal altogether.

Unbelievable stuff from CSK to find players out of nowhere to be HEROES!!! Matheesha Pathirana and Maheesh Theekshana have been brilliant today with the ball and have completely annihilated the belief that CSK have the weakest death bowling of all teams!! We still have Magala and Pretorius inside who are specialist death bowlers, but Bravo has skillfully turned Deshpande into a reliable death bowler and CSK have found Theekshana and Pathirana at the most amazing time!!

Rahane continues to make us jaw drop, Shivam Dube continues to shut mouths (including mine) royally, Akash Singh is doing very well in the Powerplay (another "shut mouth" for me; can now see why he is favored over Rajvardhan, who is seen more as a middle-death bowler). Topping the table at the halfway stage with 5 wins out of 7 was beyond DREAMS when the season started, but hope this goes the DISTANCE (fingers crossed).

Magala, Stokes and Chahar are going to be fit in a few days, but unless someone needs rest or injury, I wouldn't change the side. Pathirana needs to play all the way through. I hope Theekshana is OK for the 27th game vs RR at Jaipur.

On the Dhoni question - hope he plays 2-3 more years. He doesnt need to bat at all for the rest of his career. Just sit inside and come out as "specialist captain / wicketkeeper". If this Impact Sub rule continues (it has made things entertaining), it will extend many careers including possibly MS Dhoni! :cheers

In fact, CSK batting looked deeper in the first 2-3 games when Deepak Chahar and Rajvardhan Hangargekar played. Right now, they bat only until 8 (Tushar, Pathirana and Theekshana are proper tailenders; maybe Theekshana can hit a six or two by luck). Its their top order that has made their batting look very deep.

7 matches, 634 runs at an average of 57+ in the recent Ranji trophy. Is that called a "struggle"?

I might have mistaken his stats for last season or something had no idea he scored well this season.

And Yeah Dhoni should play till 50s.

Big mistake KKR done yesterday is not sending Jason Roy as opener... He should have come with Narine... First 7 overs, scoring 6 rpo on chasing 236 run is big joke...

CSK's approach has had me baffled. The thinking seems new age- Long gone are the days where they used to bat like a Test match and take the game deep. Changing the strategy with the time is the need of the hour and they seem to be doing it well.
