My opinions on the retentions and releases for all the 10 teams
Chennai Super Kings
Of course they retained Thala Dhoni for another year, despite winning the trophy in 2023 which could have been a great farewell itself. Happy they are backing all their pacers including Simarjeet Singh who was injured last year. Thankfully they haven't lost faith in him , he was pretty good when Chahar was out in the 2022 season. Don't like that they let Pretorius go, a proper death bowler and a No. 7 but he's probably getting older and not any better. I don't object letting Sisanda and Kyle go as they can get better bowlers (Not a fan of Kyle in T20s anyway), while Rayudu and Stokes were expected. Akash Singh being released was surprised since Dhoni played him a lot last year as one of the pacers
Delhi Capitals
All their retentions seem fairly justified- It was funny that Ngidi was still retained after warming the bench for so long over Mustafizur but that was probably due to the price differences. They also retained Praveen Dubey who is probably the last guy I'd remember in the DC Squad. And Ishant Sharma as well, but looks like he will play some more. They should have definitely kept Rossouw because he's mostly just a T20 specialist playing T20Is for SA and leagues around the world, and he's already doing a good job. Sarfaraz was backed heavily last year and is still released. Good that they let Pandey go cause he's not fitting in that top order, and Sakariya cause he can start for a bunch of other teams instead of being on bench.
Gujarat Titans
Hardik was retained, and then traded to Mumbai. Which leaves one spot in the middle-order alone wide open, while they have retained the rest of their core playing XI. Matthew Wade though, why? Tons of better players in the auction and I feel he is mostly done anyway (Yes, despite the current IND-AUS series). Releasing Odean and Shanaka are good moves, and I knew one of Joseph or Little would go and it was Joseph though he was cheaper by 2 crores. But why release Mavi and Dayal? They were solid backups, but it's great for them now because there are other teams where they'd definitely start. KS Bharat would have also been a good retention considering Saha is approaching retirement age.
Kolkata Knight Riders
They've only gone and retained about half the squad, but somehow Russell and Narine are part of it despite being only half the players they were before. Released both their experienced quicks in Shardul and Umesh to get cash, but also removed Lockie and Southee, the latter who wasn't even that pricey. They also let go of Wiese who could have been a great Russell backup and is at his prime despite his age. They might have to really go hard on both Indian and overseas Pacers mainly, in the auction.
Lucknow Super Giants
Got back most of the team, though I would have thought they'd let Mark Wood go and get him back for a cheaper price. Retained Hooda as well, despite his form last year. They only let go of bench-warmers and fringe players except Unadkat- with Avesh also traded back to LSG, they are definitely short on Indian pace depth now. I am still not a fan of that trade at all, as LSG don't really need DDP either, and he's again gonna play at 3 where he's clearly not suited.
Mumbai Indians
They retained Green only to sell him to RCB and get Hardik, really clever move. But that would open up an OS spot in the middle order, which they could give to Brevis after he's warmed the benches for so long, as he was retained as well. Confused why they let Stubbs go, in fact I feel he's better than Brevis for that spot. They dumped all the overseas pacers except Behrendorff, which doesn't surprise me except for Duan Jansen because he seemed like the player MI would keep and groom into the next superstar. They have Shepherd too now, time to turn him from a run machine with the ball to one with the bat, and a proper bowler.
Punjab Kings
A very non PBKS-esque move sees them retain almost their entire squad and let go of just 5 players. I have no real problems with this, but I thought one of Livingstone/Curran would've been released to get at a cheaper price (most likely Curran as he was bought at 18). The other big buy Shahrukh was however released, but I'm sure he'll be back in PBKS colours for cheaper as they need him in the middle. Raj Bawa has been released before getting a proper chance, after all his U19 hype, and so has Bhanuka Rajapaksa. I feel PBKS could have just retained everyone, but it's not like they finished first with that team.
Rajasthan Royals
RR Traded off DDP which is good since they never used him well (but to a team with 2 proper openers, sigh). It's just unfair they get Avesh because now they have the most solid Indian pace attack of which one will play (Prasidh, Sen, Sandeep, Avesh), while all 4 are worthy of starting in another lineup. Should have retained McCoy as he was a great replacement to Boult and has been WI's best T20I pacer for a while. Letting go of Holder made sense considering his poor 2023 season, but that leaves a No. 7 void for them once again to be fulfilled. Happy that they are backing Ferreira as he's truly a 4D Player.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
RCB's trade of Shahbaz for Dagar itself felt like a bad decision as Shahbaz is far more experienced and can bat as floater. Getting Green for 17.5 crores makes it worse as their batting unit is already locked in, and the Top 4 seems settled enough, and the PRICE is too much. They have much lesser cash now having released most of their bowling. They should have definitely kept Hasaranga at least as now their spin unit looks the weakest of the lot. Retaining Will Jacks is a solid move, I'm seeing a Jacks masterclass when Faf is too old to play (can bowl too). Better gamble than Finn Allen imo (poor guy warmed benches all these years to be released)
Sunrisers Hyderabad
SRH traded in Shahbaz to make their stocks of spin stronger for a less experienced Dagar which is a great move imo. Despite the 10th place, their squad is really set so it made sense to only release a few players, thankfully one of that is Harry Brook, he was no way taking 13 crores and blocking Phillips' place who is a far better T20 cricketer. But I have no idea why they let Vivrant Sharma go after his performance in the last game last season, felt like he must have been backed and played more this season. Sad that Tyagi is released but he's another case of bowler who would start in any other team and was being wasted on Bench. Somehow have 34 crores in the end.
