Indian Premier League - General Discussion

Rashid has been Ambani's target for the past few years now. :lol They tried for Rashid multiple times even when Rashid was with SRH. No team wants to easily give Rashid away!
Yeah, but we'll get him sooner or later :p

@SaiSrini Btw un route tha na correct uh (your decision is correct) watch only IPL save mental peace
I am going to go that route too. Watch IPL and MLC and that is it. 5 months of cricket from these two leagues and go merry ways. I am done supporting the Indian national side.

The IPL is just enough low stakes that you don’t really have to care about it beyond a point and is entertaining enough to follow even in random games.

The biggest obstacle to the latter is the expanded group stage. Wonder how they’ll deal with it going forward since expansion is inevitable.

After seeing this "Hardik Pandya" trade, I am getting more convinced that mega auctions should continue and teams should be disbanded once in a while. They can possibly increase the mega auction cycle to "once every 5 years" instead of "once every 3 years". But I feel the mega auction cycle should continue.

This past week has been ABSOLUTE BLOCKBUSTER entertainment for everyone, as Mumbai Indians were forced to fight the mega auction dynamics by waiting two years and somehow finding a way to buy back Hardik Pandya. Imagine if the league moves towards a trading system, Mumbai Indians with their deeper pockets can cause havoc and pay undisclosed transfer fees to other franchises and very few franchises will resist that urge. It will cause uneven distribution of players and MI will always reign supreme due to their financial clout. Note: I dont hate Mumbai Indians and I have appreciated them for their incredible consistency through all seasons of IPL. But I have an issue with their financial muscle and they have constantly been working behind the scenes to scout big ticket players that literally makes you jaw drop (their pursuit of Rashid Khan is a case in point).

Even Cricinfo and its writer express concern, although in a more indirect fashion

Cricinfo said:
So does it mean franchises with deeper pockets can gain by offering high transfer fees to lure players from other teams? Doesn't it go against the principle of equality of the auction purse?
In a sense, yes, franchises can spend amounts much larger than their auction purse would allow to trade in the players they want. However, no trade can proceed without the consent of the team the player currently belongs to.

Let teams be disbanded once every 5 years (or maybe 6 if they want an exact double of 3 yrs), but keep the mega auction! And possibly tighten up the "transfer fee" criteria and make it transparent (i.e. public view). BCCI can easily do it. This auction system with the trades and the mini auctions, is definitely increasing a lot of excitement for the league, the fans, the players, etc. I mean come on, its barely a week since Indian team lose a home World Cup final and in a few days after, people are passionately and fervently talking about IPL trades and social media is literally buzzing like nothing ever happened.

I am not in favour of the auction system tbh. After the base retentions, teams ought to be given the right to engage a draft. The pecking order can be decided by the teams' finishes over the years.

I have also heard there's talk of expanding the IPL to as many as 14-16 teams divided into Groups of 2- the Major and Minor. The BCCI wants to capitalize on this and will try for 2 IPLs in the year with promotions and relegations. In a cricket mad country like ours, it is bound to happen eventually.

I am all in favor of IPL taking over the world and international cricket dying. Seeing the same 10 teams out of which only 2 teams are competitive (India and Australia) in all formats is boring. Have 2 IPL’s and have only WC’s for international cricket. Or scrap all limited overs and just play tests and IPL.

So instead of two nations dominating wearing Yellow and Blue, we will see two franchises wearing Yellow and Blue dominating the world.

Auctions ftw!
Contract system will be abused by a few teams(MI rich and corrupt, CsK corrupt and cheating track record).
Everyone talks about drafts being fair but draft doesn't give each team a same starting which auction does.

The con I have seen talked about auction is that players don't have a choice. Firstly their choice is IPL, the moment they enter auction they are IPL entity. Secondly we can give players a choice by letting them select two teams who cannot bid on them(we can let them select two teams who can but that might be a bit boring). But limit how many times a team can be selected out so the onus is on the players to select team at time of submission.
