Indian Premier League - General Discussion

He shot to prominence during the 2 years that RPSG & GL were in the IPL. In fact, he was a core member of the bowling unit that powered RPSG to the Finals in 2017/18(forgot the year actually)

I second the argument that he can be a good bowler. All he needs is a captain who can manage him and provide the opportunity. The fact that can go against him/works in certain cases- he is a left hander. We have seen if left handers arent handled well, it can be disastrous- remember Barinder Sran? Khaleel Ahmed?
Unadkat have been the leading wicket taker for Saurashtra in Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy since 2019/20 season. Suggests he not only needs Captain but drier surfaces like the one at Rajkot. And Pune/ DY Patil offers similar pitches so I have no doubt he can be successful. I would rather hope to see MI chase in matches played at Brabourne.

MI should have Unadkat in. Bumrah hasn't been in the best of form. Tying him up with Basil and Sams hasn't worked in their favour. The way I see it, is both Basil and Sams need to sit out for the next few games. The only catch is whether they will want to play both Unadkat and Tymal together? The other person they have is Arjun Tendulkar, who, I daresay, will end up making his debut this year. MI's auction strategy failures are showing clearly now- especially the fact that they do not have a world class spinner.

My ideal MI XI would also not feature Kieron Pollard. He has hogged that place unnecessarily, perhaps by virtue of having played for MI for a long time. TBH, Pollard is a tad over-rated as a batsman in IPL and has not been called upon to bowl that frequently. I'd rather have Dewald Brewis being given a few more games instead of Pollard here.

Let's be real here. Dropping Pollard is out the question. MI retained him for god's sake. Dropping him would entice ridicule from the SM, not to mention an acceptance of a strategic mistake - something that no franchise would every do.

FWIW, Pollard seems past his prime. You may still see one or two innings of significance per season but that's a very low percentage of returns IMO. Another player that comes to mind is Chris Gayle - that fellow was resting on his past laurels for a long, long time (although in his defence, he was arguably among the best T20 players in history)

Should have retained deKock

Should have retained deKock

De Kock is not a loss at all. Ishan Kishan is doing a good job covering that up, and Tilak has taken over Ishan's place in the middle order.

I think MI basically took the risk of Jofra Archer, and actually told themselves "we might have to write off IPL 2022, and start on a clean slate from 2023 onwards when Archer and Bumrah join forces". So MI are in this current season where they are ready to take a hit (well they've 5 titles; they can afford to) and then prepare for 2023 where Archer will plug the gaps in the bowling.

Tweaks in the intra season auction, and we'll have a great squad with Brevis and Tilak having more exposure.

My 2 regrets from MI's history:
Letting Jos go in 2018
Not caring to retain Pat Cummins as he was ruled out of 2018 and restricted in 2019 by CA.

Shaw's wonderful start wasted by poor middle order batting! This is why Shreyas Iyer was such a crucial player to them and they let him go for nothing!

2019 they got de Kock
2020 they got Boult

So they made up for it.

They can try KS Bharat at 3.

Crap batting from Pant

LSG dropped Manish Pandey. :clap

I am gonna share some stats of Pant in T20 format since his comeback (January 2021)

Pant's 20+ scores in IPL 2021 -

51(32) vs RR
37(27) vs SRH
58*(48) vs RCB (Match losing knock)
35*(21) vs SRH
24(24) vs RR
39(36) vs KKR
26(22) vs MI
51*(35) vs CSK

Only 3 innings with 140+ strike rate.

So, there were only 3 innings with 20+ score and 140+ strike rate out of 16 innings.

Strike rate in IPL 2021 - 128
Strike rate in T20I in 2021 - 125

He recently hit a half-century after 3 years in T20I that too on a weak bowling unit.

Hasn't he been playing in the Indian T20 team due to his performances in Test cricket and past performances in IPL?
