So finally the IPL is over, come Monday June 12nd, 2008 there will be no IPL matches to play or watch, so we all move on too other cricketing events.
I guess many will say that the IPL was a huge success, that in my mind will depend on where you from and what are the factors being looked at. While the IPL was a big success for India and Indian cricket, exposure of young talent (still to be proven, 20-20 is not IOD), I wonder and ask how much has it done for international cricket, in my humble opinion nothing, the international stars were already stars and most did not leave up to expectations anyway, but it surely did what all cricket matches and events have done in the past, be it First Class, County, even International cricket itself, created an avenue for players to pickup injuries Mohammad Asif, Matthew Hayden and most recently Smith of South Africa: http://content-wi.cricinfo.com/engvrsa/content/current/story/353254.html.

How does that affect these players, or more importantly the countries they play for and while these boards will say that these injuries means nothing or very little to them their teams at international commitments shows a different picture, ask Australia and in time we will see what, if at all it affects SA on their tour to England.

IPL is a success, and thats because the Indian public lapped it up. Its success does not depend on how other countries react to it (even though reports came in that some of the other countries were also reacting favorably). All that however, is a bonus because the tournament was made for the Indian public and the organisers wanted to milk the Twenty20 craze that enveloped the nation after our World cup victory

And they have succeeded. The crowds have been sensational. We saw full houses in many of the matches (almost 80% I would say for a 6 week tournament). But it has to be shortened. The World Cup last year was short, crips and sweet. IPL should also have such a small duration and it would make it even big a success.

Indeed, but Dhoni does believe in RMF bowlers for the final over. He has used Joginder Sharma twice on in similar occasions. He is a believer in not saving the best bowlers but rather bowling them out before the last over in an attempt to steal the game before it gets so close.

Btw Colin, "Symond's"?!
Yeah, he takes risks, which is good captaincy. Chennai's mistakes in the field arguably cost them, while Rajasthan arguably gave as good a demonstration of courageous fielding as anyone could. That's not to say Balaji's final over could not still have come off; the wides were very costly and changed the complexion of the final over.

When Raina dropped that catch, I kicked the bed in disgust. It was easily the turning point of the match. Being the fielder that he is, Raina no right in the world to drop that. He has dropped some dollies in this tournament although his ground fielding is as always, almost BLEMISHLESS.

Next season, we should swap guys like Abhinav Mukund, Amarnath and Fleming for other players. We should try to get a good reliable bowler (may be a spinner!) who can give good balance to the attack. Dhoni should continue to lead Chennai. He has enhanced Chennai's status with his towering presence.

Its the Indian Premier League, not the International Premier League. The teams have a 4 overseas player limit for a reason. I'd think it did help Shaun Marsh and Shane Watson though. The international players are there to add value to the tournament. I think they did their job well and got handsomely paid for it. It helped a lot of Indian youngsters. Few knew about players like M.S. Gony, Yusuf Pathan, Swapnil Asnodkar etc. The IPL gave them a platform to showcase their talent in front of the whole world.

If this tournament has proved anything it has proved that Laxmipathy Balaji doesn't have a future in bowling at any level of the game (probably at club level he does). He's got too slow, his slower deliveries are too predictable and even sloggers without an iota of a technique like Yousuf Pathan are able to thrash the daylights out of him. He generally has lost his confidence and his cricketing ability.

The biggest reason Chennai lost the final was the 42 runs of 4 overs conceded by Laxmi Balaji. Even Joginder Sharma would have been a better bet because his slower deliveries are better disguised..

Congrats to Rajasthan Royals for a terrific performance.

Maybe in the future, this tournament will see better performances from other sides. Except Kings XI Punjab and Rajasthan, all other sides have been disappointing in phases. Even Chennai didn't play particularly well in spite of making it to the final. Muttiah Muralitharan has been the biggest disappointment.

No,CSK played the game without a REST. This is not right. Why couldnt they give a day's break in between ?

You're probably right. But still Chennai has never been consistent enough to deserve a win. The bowling has been inconsistent and the fielding has been very patchy to say the least.

Also we didn't have enough quality international players - particularly as Muttiah Muralitharan has been a big disappointment.

Only Albie Morkel and Makhaya Ntini pulled their weight in this team. Other internationals have not done much.

What?? For heaven's sake its only a Twenty over per side game. You are talking as if they had just played a Test Match.

Also, the presentation ceremony featured some of the biggest crooks in India.

I meant from Indian players. We didn't have any "star" players like Tendulkar or Ganguly or Dravid who were dedicated to the side. Dhoni was so expensive (6 Crores for god's sake) that the team owners had to make a lot of compromises in selecting the rest of the squad.

And even among the foriegn players, do you include Chamara Kapugedera as a great asset to the team?

Also Stephen Fleming left the side just as he was beginning to get into some form. That left the top order very weak.
