India's tour of Australia - December/January 2015

I am pretty sure Saha is the keeper of choice from management pov, since Ojha has clearly been named as the backup keeper who is expected to fly back once Dhoni arrives in Australia. Plus I feel Saha deserves this chance. Poor guy has been on the fringes Forever

except ojha is coming in with 4 centuries this season including 2 doubles not to mention three of them in brisbane against aus A plus notout in two of them, pretty strong case i would say.

I don't think Dhawan would have got rest in this last 2 ODI's if he wasn't going to open in the 1st test. You can't throw in Rahul just like that against Australia. I have always believed that Umesh is a better test bowler than Varun Aaron. So my third seamer would be Umesh Yadav alongside Ishant Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. I would hate to leave out both Shami and Aaron but Bhuvi was our main bowler in the last test series and Ishant also showed a lot of promise so we can't drop those two. It will be interesting to see if they go for extra batsman or bowler. I don't think Jadeja has done enough to get that spot. For me, it has to be between Rohit and Karn Sharma. Picking Karn Sharma would be an aggressive move but a big gamble as well.

Hah, because Virat Kohli is the captain of 1st test, he will handle the pre-tour press conference and not Dhoni. Pretty smart move by BCCI so Dhoni don't have to answer any questions regarding Mudgal report.

Mudgal report is out on 24. The press conference will be a week later.

India’s tour of Australia (2014) is one of the most awaited tours of the year, as the young Indian team will take on the mighty Aussies in their own backyard. Many former Australian cricketers including the likes of Glenn McGrath and Damien Fleming have said that Australia will too good for India and they will 4-0. Considering India’s abysmal overseas record in the recent past and Australia’s power-packed squad that too in their own backyard, many would agree with McGrath and Fleming.

Playing with four bowlers overseas is a terrible decision. We saw what happened in New Zealand and South Africa last year. Bowlers like Zaheer and Ishant had to bowl almost 40 overs in a single innings. Then in England they got the combination right, playing with 5 bowlers (Binny was an allrounder). So they need to go in with 5 bowlers if they even want a shot at winning. I would say Aaron, Bhuvi, Ishant, and Yadav is the best attack. They can also keep ashwin in as he can bowl and add useful 30 or 40 runs. I also don't like rohit and dhawan, especially dhawan because his technique is so bad against the moving ball. Also, rohit can't really bat in overseas conditions. I am not expecting a win in this series but I think someone like Kohli can have a good series with the bat, of course he can't win you test match by himself.

I disagree in part with both the sides above. I think we Dhoni out we need a batsman and so Raina automatically walks into the side for the first test.

Why only four regular bowlers? India needs to play with 5 bowlers to have a chance. Dhoni likes to really just play with 4 bowlers even though its such a bad decision. We saw how our bowlers struggled with fitness in New Zealand and South Africa. 5 bowlers allows the bowlers to get nice rest before bowling new spells.

India need an extra batsman in Australia. I would personally play Raina and have him/Kohli handle the 5th bowler duties. We need an extra batsman against the quality of Australia's bowlers.

My XI for Brisbane would be this:

M Vijay
KL Rahul
C Pujara
A Rahane
V Kohli*
S Raina
W Saha
K Sharma
I Sharma
M Shami
U Yadav

This is my ideal XI, although I am pretty sure this is not going to be the final XI. Play Rahul soon enough as we cannot provide time for Dhawan to get going. Also play Rahane at the crucial No.4 spot because he was our best batsman in England, and Kohli can feel more comfortable at the No.5 spot (where he also did well last time in Australia). Raina for the left hand variety and also the fact that he can bowl useful overs of off spin and a brilliant fielder (safe slip catcher). And I want raw pace and height from my fast bowlers. Brisbane could be a fast bowler's wicket and I definitely want more pace in the attack, and thereby my ideal XI has no place for Kumar for Brisbane

Good point about the bowling. However, I think India should go in with 4 fast bowlers in Brisbane. They need to attack fire with fire. I won't be surprised if Australia goes in with 4 fast bowlers and no spinner. About Kohli coming in at #5, I disagree with you on that. Our best batsman needs to come in at #4, we can't let him come in when we are like 4 or 5 wickets down and that is too much pressure for him. Kohli has the ability to change the game by attacking along with good defense. Him and Pujara are good where they are. Rahane at 5 is good, I would also include raina like you have said but I don't know if he will get a chance. Ravi Shastri likes him for tests so they might include him. I don't think a spinner is needed for Brisbane, we need raw pace and four fast bowlers would be a good aggressive decision.

I know where you are coming from but we saw what happened when we went with 5 bowlers. Binny hardly bowled any overs but again, that was under Dhoni's captaincy. Kohli might go with 5 bowler strategy but I don't see Dhoni doing the same. I actually was very impressed with the way Dhawan played in New Zealand but then again, he didn't do well in England. Yes, he does not have the greatest technique against the moving ball but ball there won't be much lateral movement in Australia. If he can cope with the pace and bounce, he will be successful. I am a big fan of Rohit and that is probably the only reason i have included him in the line-up. He just looks so good when he is in full flow and I just wish he gets that consistency in his batting.

Kohli will tear Australia to shreds. It won't even be a contest.

LOL Shravi, you said the same thing when they went to England and he was horrible there. I hope he performs well in Australia.

Lets not go that far yet. I said to myself that he would tear the English attack apart and instead it turned out to be the opposite. So I have decided to keep mum about his performance coming up in this series. I do think this will be a better series for him if not a career defining series. Especially after his words in the press conference along with Ravi yesterday has shown he is ready for the challenge. He does love challenges so lets see. I like his mindset, he said we need to play aggressive cricket just like Australia does and I believe he is right, our bowlers should get under their skin just like the Australian bowlers do.
