India's tour of Pakistan, 2008-09, 3 Tests and 5 ODIs

Oh and sohum, just using your bowlers win matches you raved on for so long:

Shoaib Akhtar bowling average in wins: 17.36
Zaheer Khan bowling average in wins: 24.37

Gul and Sharma really haven't played enough to make a proper dataset, so I'm not going to even check.

Danish Kaneria bowling average in wins: 22.02
Anil Kumble bowling average in wins: 18.75

Just interesting statistics for all of us.

The pitches are suppoused to be very pacer friendly (more than spin), so it would be suicidal to go in with both Kumble and Harbhajahn.

Prehaps the key might be how Gul and Sharma go head-to-head in this series?

Well I already said Kumble was better, so not sure why you felt you had to post that.
Because when I am quoting statistics, I think it is relevant to keep everything the same, instead of picking and choosing statistics that only favor our argument.

Just saying, Zaheers only played 3 tests in Pakistan (possibly inaccurate)?
He's taken as many wickets as Akhtar in India-Pakistan matches in Pakistan in half as many matches.

And secondly we're playing on pitches that are new and bowler friendly, I doubt that the in Pakistan statistic is the way to go since its quite meaningless since the pitches will be different (slightly similar to the Karachi 2006 one)
If the pitches are different, I'd expect Zaheer to be even more successful?

Zaheer v Pakistan: 47.29
Akhtar v India: 34.50

That gives us a wider dataset, and a slightly accurate comparison.
How is the Pak statistic more meaningless than looking at statistics that include both India and Pakistan? I'd expect the changing pitches in Pakistan to still be more like the previous pitches in Pakistan rather than like the pitches in India (which you, yourself have, I believe, pointed out to be flat as pancakes).

Also, you could just use Gul and Sharma's career averages to get an accurate representation as well.
It wouldn't be quite as accurate, especially given factors such as form that we are completely ignoring.

Yup, and you don't see me arguing that Zaheer Khan is a better match-winner than Shoaib Akthar... All I'm doing with this silly little argument is showing that if you're going to look only at averages, you're looking at less than half the picture.

Well, then I guess we will have to agree to disagree at this point.

Prehaps this debate can be resumed during the test series when we see first-hand what goes on when both teams' bowlers play on the same pitches and games.

Fair enough. Let's hope Shoaib keeps himself fit/out of trouble till then!

Oh god! Another 'comparing the averages' thread?????

zMario obviously enjoys doing all this and seems to consider this as his main profession.

I Would like a tour of England or NZ than Pakistan not another one!!

I want to see Pakistan play against England(in England) because they haven't played in England for a long time now

Well sais, what would you use, since you want to sound so intelligent?

Please, we are DIEING to hear about it.

Let's recap, shall we? I said that Indian batsmen are better than Pakistani batsmen, but Pakistani bowlers are better than Indian bowlers.

Cricketman challenges the second part. I provide evidence which counters that. Sohum provides evidence that counters what I say. And so on, and so forth.

In the end, we both agree that we can put that comment by Cricketman to the test in this upcoming test series.

Now, you tell me. What would you use to compare the 2 side's bowlers? Hypothetical situations? Oooo Zaheer Khan will take 3 hat-tricks, and bowl Pakistan out for 20. Oooo, Sachin will score 300 off 150 balls. Oooo, Ishant Sharma takes a 10 wicket haul.

All of that is meaningless, and the averages are possibly the only accurate way of doing it. Now if you live in an imaginary world where you like to dream of things like that in the above, feel free to do so. But at least let us live in reality :)

That message of mine was in a humorous tone (not obliged to put the smileys, but sorry if you expected the smiley to get the tone).

The part above in bold: I thought you dont like that line. Remember that 'famous' thread?:p (well let me put the smileys in now)

And did I not comprehensively use the averages and statistics to prove my point and disprove the theory that "Sachin is God"?

Not sure what you're talking about.

No discussion on the Inzy-Sachin topic, please. And thanks for setting us agnostics back a few decades. :p

We are gonna see another 239 like performance from Gangu in the series :D

And who knows, Yuvi might score a century in one of the Tests :p

But Pakistan really need Shoaib and Gul to perform if they want to have any chance against Indians.

First, they need them both on the field first. The series is still 4-5 months away, and I don't see how Shoaib Actor can stay fit/stay out of controversies.

Last 10 years, Pakistan Played India 15 test matches, home/away alltogether, won 5, lost 5, draw 5.

Pakistan = India ATM.

Nobody smiling ATM.
