Story International Cricket - Great Series

India 'B' v Pakistan 'B', 3rd Unofficial Test (4 days), at Calcutta, 1978

India 'B' extended their lead slowly to 200, before declaring on the stroke of Lunch, setting Pakistan 'B' in 4 hours.

Mindful of the slow scoring throughout the match, and the Pakistani's first innings, they felt 200 about right, though if Pakistan bat well they could win easily.

India will need quick wickets, desperate to salvage something from the series.

K.Srikkanth made his first 50 of the series, but was out soon after, and India batted to slowly to set Pakistan a more difficult target.

Mudassar Nazar claimed a couple of quick scalps before the close, but in truth the Indians just took the innings as batting practice, and the crowd's boredom was palpable.

India 'B' v Pakistan 'B', 3rd Unofficial Test, at Calcutta, 1978

There was drama at Eden Gardens, with the pitch finally speeding up in the final session, the Pakistan 'B' team nearly pulled off a victory.

Needing 4 off the final over of the last hour to win, the Pakistanis could manage only 3 off Ghavri, as remarkably the match was left drawn with the scores level.

In truth the target was much too low, and victory would have flattered the Pakistanis, as India 'B', desperate to win the level the series, declared too early.

Yadav pulled a muscle in his first over, and was unable to bowl for the rest of the day, hampering the home team's efforts.

Rameez Raja made an excellent hundred to sustain the run chase, accelerating after making 50 and looking in great touch.

Pakistan 'B' won the 3 match series 1-0, with their excellent bowling in the first game setting up the victory.

Throughout the series the Pakistan 'B' batsmen had the better of things, scoring 5 hundreds to India 'B's one.

Pitch: Slow and low bounce (1B)

The Indians won the toss and elected to bat on a pitch expected to break up on the final day.

Gavaskar and Chauhan took full advantage of good batting conditions, both scoring centuries during an opening partnership of 231.

S.Amarnath failed, but Vengsarkar, Viswanath, and Kirmani all batted well, enabling the Indians to declare at 417/5 midway through Day 2.

The home attack struggled, but Abdul Raqib deserved praise for his 2 wickets, outbowling more experienced international players.

Banks XI struggled to a mediocre total in reply to the Indians 417, posting 275 to narrowly avoid the follow on.

Haroon Rasheed top scored with 85 batting at number 3, and opener Sadiq made 56, but the rest made starts and gave it away.

The offspinners lead the way, with Venkat claiming 4 wickets to possibly claim a test spot.

Ghavri also bowled well, finally finding some joy after a tough series for India 'B'.

Banks XI v Indians, 4 day tour match, Defence Stadium Karachi, 1978

Pitch: Slow and Low Bounce, becoming Ball Keeping Low

Weather: Hot and Sunny

A magnificent unbeaten 222* by Javed Miandad lead Banks XI to in the end a comfortable victory over the Indians.

Sharing a partnership of 258 for the 3rd wicket with Haroon Rasheed who made 95, Javed punished all the bowlers in a brilliant innings.

The bowlers could find no way through his defence, and captain Bedi was left to rue his declaration, though with little riding on the game, he could be forgiven for 366 was enough.

Bedi himself had a poor match with the ball, and Venkat was once again the best of the spinners.

A young Kapil Dev struggled, though he did strike with the new ball in both innings.

In the end Javed Miandad was named man of the match for his match winning double hundred, despite Gavaskars twin centuries.

Banks XI won the toss, and with conditions normal, elected to bat first.

It was until Taslim Arif hit out in the closing overs that Banks XI approached anything near a competitive score.

Another excellent opening partnership by Gavaskar and Chauhan settled things, the Indians winning by 10 wickets with 8.4 overs.

India fell short by 23 runs in what was an exciting game up until the last couple of overs when things got beyond the later Indian batsmen.

Chauhan and S.Amarnath both made half centuries, as India got themselves into a good position, needing 130 from the final 20 overs.

Decided to play another ODI, but put in the wrong pitch number in IC Helper and a low scoring match on the wrong pitch for the ground resulted.

Not to worry, will just say this is next day on a worn and Uneven Sialkot pitch from the night before.

Pakistan v India, 2nd One Day International, at Sialkot

With an Uneven pitch mistakenly used for the match, Pakistan elected to bowl first, and the move reaped dividends.

Gavaskar and Chauhan, previously in such good form, were out for ducks, and S.Amarnath 6, as India were reduced to 12/3.

They never really recovered, and it took hard hitting 62 by M.Amarnath to drag them to 166.

Pakistan were given an excellent start by Mohsin, and his innings of 69 settled the game.

There were some late wickets to Kapil Dev, but by then the result was not in doubt, and a boundary to Imran saw them across the line with plenty of overs to spare.

I ended up playing a 50 over game between India 'B' and Pakistan 'B' because I still had the teams set up.

I lost an amazing performance, 346/5 off 50 overs by India because I didn't save, oops.

India 'B' v Pakistan 'B' , 2nd Unofficial ODI, Madras, 1978

Pitch: 1B - Slow pace, Low bounce

Weather" Hot and Sunny

India 'B' won the toss, and elected to bowl first on a slow, low pitch.

Pakistan 'B' started well, the openers putting on 48 in quick time, but 4 wickets to Doshi derailed the innings.

The scoring ground to a halt and middle order wickets tumbled, leaving the visitors only able to post 144 off their 50 overs.

In reply the Indians were untroubled, an opening partnership of 69 between Srikkanth and Gaekwad setting up the win.

Gaekwad was unbeaten on 70 at the end, but the man of the match was Doshi for his 4-25 off 10 accurate overs.

Pakistan v West Indies, Tri Series (50 overs), 1st Match, Melbourne, 1981/2

Pitch: 1 - Good Batting Wicket

Weather: 7 - Heavy Cloud

Pakistan won the toss and batted first on a good batting wicket.

The openers started streakily, Mudassar edging one through gully off Marshall, before being trapped lbw by the same bowler with the total on 26/1 off 7.4 overs.

Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas then joined Mohsin Khan, and the pair added 38 before Zaheer had his stumps splayed by a trademark Joel Garner yorker for 15.

That left the score 64/2 off 18 overs.

Mohsin, having looked good for his 37, then fell lbw to Holding, leaving the score 64/3 off 18.4 and the Pakistan innings in some need of rebuilding.

Javed Miandad was dropped badly by Dujon down the legside off Garner on 2, it was to prove a vital miss.

Javed and Wasim Raja then added a brilliant counterattacking stand of 147 for the 4th wicket, off 158 balls, the pair hitting 18 fours and 7 sixes between them.

Javed, again dropped on 57, this time by Roberts at cover off Holding, rode his luck to make 76 off 78 balls, while Raja was eventually bowled by a Marshall yorker for a career best ODI score of 94.

Javed had earlier brought up his 50 off 51 balls, while Wasim Raja took 63 balls for his.

Imran was out first ball, but by then it didn't really matter, and Pakistan eventually totalled 249/7 off their 50 overs, a solid performance on a good pitch.

Holding was the pick of the bowlers, with 3-46.

West Indies need 250 runs to win off 50 overs.

Pakistan v West Indies, Tri Series (50 overs), 1st Match, Melbourne, 1981/2

Pitch: 1 - Good Batting Wicket ( Overs 0 - 32) then 7A - Fast Paced Wicket (Overs 0-50)

Weather: Heavy Cloud

In a dramatic finish, with Sarfraz bowling an excellent second last over conceding just two runs and taking a wicket, West Indies needed 6 runs from the final over bowled by Mudassar Nazar.

Imran had earlier bowled out when things got desperate, claiming 3-37 to keep Pakistan in the game, leaving Mudassar to bowl the final over.

Mudassar conceded just 3 runs, and had Holding lbw from the first 5 balls, leaving 3 runs needed for the win off the last ball, or 2 for the tie.

Malcolm Marshall then pulled a good length ball from Mudassar for 4 to win the game for the West Indies from the final ball by 2 wickets.

The run chase was set up by Richards, opening for the first time in ODI's with 82 before being caught off a skier, and Greenidge, batting at 3, with 74.

The pair took a long time to get settled, but once they got flowing the Pakistani bowlers were powerless to stop the flow of runs.

Richards scored his 50 off 80 balls, and Greenidge his off 98, before both sped up in the later overs.

With the pitch speeding up, runs and wickets flowed.

The West Indies were sustained in the final overs by Dujon, who made an 39 off 24 balls, and got them close enough for Marshall to finish things off.

Man of the Match was Wasim Raja for his fighting 94 in a losing cause, his career best innings so nearly bringing his team victory.
