Holy ████, I never knew that, thanks Howsie.
I'd heard they had two divisions or something, but never really looked into it.

One thing this game fails to do with a lot of South African players is to factor in that quite a few of these no name players have played a lot of amatuer cricket which has really help boost their first-class records. In South Africa your've got franchise cricket which is the top level of domestic cricket in South Africa and is of real high standard, and then you have provincial cricket which is of really low standard, basically amatuer's that don't get paid.

Take Neil Wagner for example. His record in South Africa for Northerns (a provinical team) is outstanding, he took 79 wickets at 18. His record for the Titans (one of six teams in the strong first-class competition) isn't however, he averaged 39 with the ball for them. His record for Otago since moving to New Zealand isn't too flash either, 49 wickets at 35. But because this provincial cricket is still counted as first-class cricket (and I believe they might soon be removing it) Neil Wagner has a first-class average of 24 and is a highly rated bowler on the game, instead of being a bowler who has 55 wickets at just under 40 like he should be.

David Wiese is the same, he's done all his damage in the provincal competition.

I had no idea about that. Yeah I had always wondered how Wagners bowling averages were so low and that explains it.

Hauritz has improved massively, but he's not as good as Swann imo. Murali>Vettori>Swann>Hauritz/Harbhajan>Mendis>Benn.

Yes, Hauritz has improved but he's only played only a handful of games compared to Harbhajan & I'm sure majority of people would rather have Harbhajan in their team than Hauritz, too early to raise his value so much; exactly the reason why Vettori should be after Murali & not Swann because Vettori has earned it through years of hardwork & Swann is just a couple of years old in International Cricket. I'd also like to squeeze in Ray Price from Zimbabwe somewhere on that list, he's a very good bowler & he would've easily been counted among the top spinners in the world right now had he been playing for one of the test-playing nations.

I wouldn't rate Taylor as good as them tbh. Smith has an exceptional domestic record, and he only bats at 8 because Australia play him as a spinner not a batting all-rounder.

Personally, I'm totally against rating players too high based on their domestic records as there are always many a "Ramprakash & Hick" among these players & one would find that most of them just can't repeat their FC performances at the international level, not for too long anyway.

I would say Vettori>Murali/Swann>Hauritz>Harbhajan>Botha/Harris (depending on format)>Mendis/Benn

That's a very very bold claim to make, Wisden guys might have something to say about that, not to mention whole of Sri Lanka :D

^ that seems reasonable, so long as younger players aren't given ratings near there.

Yes, I see too many youngsters among both batters & bowlers who are too highly rated even though they have played very little international cricket. I see many people who are rated better than Tendulkar & Kallis even though both of their form hasn't dipped one bit, & yet I see people like Akmal, Matthews, Gambhir, Clarke, Smith, James Taylor :doh & many absolute nobodys compared to these giants being rated higher than them, even Sangakkara, considering his marathon run in the last few years has been rated VERY low at 1332.

According to ICC developers, McKay is best bowler & Gambhir is best batsman in the world :doh, that really asks a lot of questions about their knowledge of this sport.

Steyn should undoubtedly be the best pacer in the world BY FAR as he has been ripping through every side in his path no matter what the conditions with an astonishing rate of more than 5 wickets a match & if he keeps that up for 3-4 more years, he'll definitely go down in history as one of the all time greats & it again shows developers' lack of cricketing knowledge it seems that people like Nannes, Bollinger, McKay, Siddle, Hilfenhaus who haven't even played enough at the international level to be rated as good as they've been rated in this game (& might never be) have been rated higher than Styen; for the love of God, WATSON (640) has been rated alongside Steyn (630) :doh

Along with bowlers named above, Tuffey, M Gillespie, Anderson, Broad, M Johnson, Southee etc etc have been rated too well in comparison with sub-continental bowlers like Zaheer Khan, Malinga, Sharma, Kulasekara, Asif etc & IF the weather conditions & pitches in different parts of the world have been correctly coded into the game & assuming, they actually have an impact on players' performances, ideally, better sub-continental bowlers need to be overrated slightly while bowlers from relatively bowler-friendly countries should be underrated a little to compensate for the effect of pitches & weather otherwise for example, English, NZ bowlers will end up with TOO low averages & sub-continetal bowlers with TOO high averages in comparison to their real-life averages respectively; on the same count, batters from the sub-continent need to be underrated slightly & English & NZ batters need to be slightly overrated to balance things out.

I took Hedger14's list and tried to rate them based on my assessment. Added their overall test & ODI records along with their last 2 years' performaces along with respective innings played statistic in the brackets to show in which direction their careers might be heading in the future & basing the ratings on that & didn't overrate youngsters & newbies as I'm not someone who'd put someone who has averaged 50 for 10 years & someone who has averaged 50 years for 2 years in the same league. Kiwi & English players have been slighly overrated since they'll be playing in more bowler-friendly conditions (assuming they have an impact on players in the game & their performace). What do you guys think about the list?

I've made a kind of fantasy roster. I am playing with Victoria, New Zealand. I have edited numerous players all over the world. For New Zealand I have created and included Richard Hadlee(bowling rating 434), Dion Nash, Martin Crowe, Mark Richardson and Geoff Allott. I wanted to play against the old West Indies side so I created Brian Lara, Curtley Ambrose, Gordon Greenidge, Ian Bishop etc....Its fun.

I have updated my first post and included my new excel table that contains player ratings.

Secondly, I have begun inserting all the batting and bowling ratings of the players into an excel document. This process takes a lot of time, but at the end we will have a comprehensive list of all the players in the test nations, and we can compare them. I will try to do some kolpak players as well. Once this list is completed, I can then make another copy that contains the edits I have made in my roster and through this, the roster can be made more accurate. If anyone else would like to help me finding all these numbers, you could choose a nation, write down the player's name, bowling rating and batting ratings into different columns (doesn't matter if you put the full name in one box, or into separate boxes), and I can add them to the table. This process will likely take a while, so help is much appreciated

Current Progress: All New Zealand Players entered, some Indian, English, and Pakistani players included. (as at 12/08/2010)

Since you're doing Aus, NZ, Eng, Ind & Pak, I'll get to work with SA, SL, WI, Ban & Zim, in that order, depending on how quickly I can get each one of them done. Cheers.

Ok that would be great :) How are you going to do it? Excel would be best, but you can put it into a text document with spaces between first name, last name, batting rating and bowling rating, and it'd work just as well :)

@ enigma. I would say you have rated Sangakkara, Chanderpaul, Bell and maybe a few others a little too high.

Gambhir and Sehwag are better than Smith in my opinion. De Villiers should be about on the same level as Gambhir or higher even. Ponting should be rated higher than Kallis even though I don't like him as he is the best (or second best maybe) in the world. I'd say that Watson should be rated slightly higher while Trott should be higher than Yuvraj as should a whole lot of people.

Hmmm. Enigma, for me, Strauss should be a bit higher and ten Doeschate should be lower, as well as pretty much everything (except Chanderpaul :p) that hedger has said.
