Lancashire begin their County Season with a 4-day Championship match at Old Trafford against Hampshire. Mark Chilton won the toss and elected to bat on a hard surface despite their being looming clouds overhead.

But Mark Chilton fell to the bowling change of bringing in Bruce, who forced Chilton to nick to second slip for 10.

Mark Chilton drives away his only boundary of his innings.

Sutcliffe fell soon after, another nick for 12, Bruce once again taking the wicket, a great start from him. Lancashire now need to hang on in with Hodge and Law if they want any chance of beating Hampshire.

Hodge got off to a respectfully quick start and Law played sensibly at the other end. The introduction of Warne was not enough for Hampshire as Hodge and Law put on a 50 partnership. Bruce took his 3rd wicket of the day though, Hodge flicking to Tremlett at square leg for 35. Flintoff strolled to the crease and made a positive start as he and Law settled in together. Lancashire reaching 100/3.

Fall of Wickets: 29, 32, 98

Warne could not master a breakthrough and Law fought hard to reach a terrific 50 and by him, Flintoff contributed with a helpful 21 runs, Lancashire now bringing up the 150 for the loss of only 3 wickets just after lunch.

As Law and Flintoff built a great partnership and continued to develop it, Hampshire?s moment came where Flintoff nicked a wide ball by Hampshire?s medium pacer, Thornley. To Warne and Thornley?s disbelief the ball dropped down from 2nd slip?s palms and fell to the floor, Flintoff dropped on 28. Almost immediately after, Flintoff and Law brought up their 100 partnership.

Luckily for the southerners, Flintoff soon made a second error to Thornley and smacked the ball into the waiting hands of Pietersen at short cover, gone for 36. Despite this, nothing could stop Law in converting his 50 into a terrific century brought up by a terrific cover drive to the boundary. Beforehand, Warne's decision to have no slips off the bowling of Tremlett came to haunt him as Law edged a defensive shot straight through the 2nd slip region. The Afternoon session closed with Law moving on to 109 not out and not out at the other end is Mal Loye, on 16.

SCORE AT TEA: Lancashire 251/4 off 57 overs.
Fall of Wickets: 29, 32, 98, 207

Lancashire v Hampshire - Old Trafford -Day 1 - Evening session

A quite sensational evening session took place at Old Trafford on the first day of this 1st Division North versus South encounter. The looming clouds relented and as Loye and Law took their guards at 251/4, they began an extraordinary flurry of runs, dominantly coming from the bat of Mal Loye. Their determination to grab singles and doubles at every possible opportunity saw Hampshire collapse and Warne seemed clueless of what to do with his bowlers after he withdrew himself from the attack. Loye continued the onslaught by reaching his half century in only forty-two balls! The message from the Lancashire dressing room was to push on for runs as with wickets in hand, Lancashire had an opportunity to score big. But when Hampshire's chance came they fluffed it, a no more than average throw to the wicket keeper saw Law in deep trouble halfway down the track as Loye's call was late but a fumble by the wicketkeeper made sure Law got home safely although replays concluded if there was no such fumble, there was no doubt Law would have been on his way back to the pavillion. Law knew how to punish Hampshire and did so by bringing up his 150 and continuing on with a menacing partnership with Loye.

Law celebrates his magical 150.

Loyes magnificent innings came to an end 3 overs before the end of the day, with hiom just falling short of a century. A well-earned 92 off 94 deliveries and a partnership with Law of nearly 200 had the Hants, and the crowd stunned and he recieved a terrific applause on his way back to the pavillion. Luke Sutton carried on with the same intent as Loye and grabbed himself 19 off 13 deliveries and Law finished on 168*. Hampshire will be dissapointed by their bowling performance, but even more ashamed of their extras tally, giving away 51 extras on this incredibly hard pitch. Chilton has hinted Lancashire might opt for the overnight declaration, leaving Hampshire with alot of work to do if they want to win this match.

Mal Loye helped Lancashire breach the 400 with a single before falling to Taylor late on in the day.

SCORE AT END OF DAY 1: Lancashire 423/5 off 84 overs
Fall of wickets: 29, 32, 98, 207, 400
