So far it had been 100% wins this week, and the Lions were hoping to maintain this record. It was a hard and fast pitch prepared by the groundsman, so the pace bowlers would certainly be looking to get it around the batsmen's neck, however, it also meant the ball would come onto the bat easier, so it was a pretty open pitch. It was quite windy as well plus overcast, so the bowlers from the pavillion end could maybe get an extra mph, whilst the spinners could bowl into the wind and get more flight.
Roper lost the toss and the Lions were put into bat first. Big mistake!!!
Mcbean and Ashmore went mental at the opening bowlers of Tamilz. They zoomed along at over an 8 over for most of the innings, with both bringing up their 100's and then 150's. Eventually they fell in the latter half of the innings in quick succession of one another but the damage was done, with the score being 340/2 when Mcbean fell in the 45th over. They also broke the clubs opening partnership stand, with their partnership being worth 313 runs!!!
Mcbean and Ashmore were on fire!!!
Hollis and Tailor then came in for the Lions with absolutely no pressure on them, what so ever. It showed as they blasted away to get the Lions up to 396/2 off their 50 overs. Tailor blazed a quickfire 33 from just 18 balls!!! It was the best ever batting performance manager Tom Baker had seen from his team and he was over the moon at the total. Ashmore's 167 off 128 balls was especially pleasing to watch and it included eight 4s and three 6s.
The game was pretty much in the bag now
With Manders being rested for international duties this weekend and Scott Burns getting a rest, the skipper James Roper, got a chance to share the new ball with Matty Pretorius again.
To cut a short story even shorter they ripped through Tamilz batting line-up in just 15.4 overs, with Roper electing to use just himself and Pretorius. They both ended up with 5 wicket hauls each, with Pretorius mainly carving through the top order and Roper used all his experience and guile to trick his way through the lower order and tail. It was a huge 340 run victory for the Lions and it showed what great form they are in right now.
MOTM went to Ashmore for his 167 which set up the Lions victory so convincingly. It was his highest score for the club, and only 13 runs short of the top score ever by a Lions batsman. The local reporter once again was there and his summary of the match showed the whole story in how much more talented the Lions players are. With 3 key players missing, they still managed to totally outclass Tamilz in nearly every department.
It was a deserved victory at the end of the day!
Even though that was a thumping victory, the Lions still stay in second place in the table. That is because Ezlyn Eleven CC also had a thumping 10 wicket victory today, which makes next week the crunch match for the Lions as they play their main rivals in the OD league next Friday. Tom Baker has already got permission from the South African Under 19 manager to play Carlton Manders and Darren Ingham is also being rested up as well, so should be hopefully able to build on his superb century and bowling performance against FCS.
Next week's OD is going to be one you don't want to miss!!!!
