Microsoft Flight Simulator Discussion

I'm always going too fast, even when I put the engine on idle to an approach. I'm always told by the autopilot to reduce throttle, but my engines are on idle? Are spoilers a good way to lower speed?

Flaps are a good way to lower speed, for a single engine you should gradually put them on in the decent, 10 - 20 and then be full flaps on landing

f7 lowers flaps incrementally f8 lowers them all the way

Will do, cheers mate.

What settings do you usually have your engines on to fly the plane on cruising altitude? So when you let go of your joystick the plane flys level so to speak... 60-70? Or do you use auto-throttle?

When I am at cruising altitude in a 737 I usually have the throttle 1/4 of the way in. I Play around with throttle and flaps until I can cruise at about 250-290 knots.

Make sure to trim the airplane so you don't have to hold it level with your hands the whole time. I don't even know what autothrottle is but I do use the autopilot to hold altitude and sometimes change heading.

Ive figured out ILS on the Cessna, I still can't understand how to read the damn ILS on the jets with all those purple dots.

Xtreme Airports : St Maartin

Ok I went out of order :p

Everyone knows St Maartins.

I found some fantastic freeware for Princess Juliana Intl Airport so I had to try it out.

Plane is a 777, flying out of Puerto Rico. Dare say this would have been my best landing yet except for one GLARING mistake.

I was coming in so quickly that the landing gear would not go down! I had to lift it up and try again, the nose gear went down but the two other lights did not turn green until I was almost over the beach area by the start of the runway!

Bar that it felt pretty good.

Nice work, Mark. Looked pretty smooth (apart from the landing gear hiccup). My landings are always horrible. Just flew the Rome to Naples mission, by far my best flight, then undershot the runway and clipped a tiny bush... boom, crash -_-.

Ah well, happy with the flight. I'm definitely improving, just need to work on my approaches.

Are you flying VFR flights? give IFR a go, ATC will set you up perfectly for the approach.

I was lined up fine, but I was descending well, then I just seemed to dip too much, tried to quickly bring it back up but my engines were on idle, so just clipped the bush.

I might do a free flight later with IFR. Just a short hop from Sydney to Melbourne maybe.

I can fly single engine almost text book. Complete IFR and ILS. With jets I cheat a lot with the auto pilot and have no idea what I am doing with flaps and throttle.

Will post a single engine IFR with ILS just to make sure I am doing that correctly.

we need to get a massive online session going.

LOL! the landing gear bit was funny.

you landed at almost 200 Knots(which is not bad).

managed it well in the end though...if this was a real scenario, the passengers would've puked their guts out!:p

I'm up for an online session, but I don't have a mic. Don't think I can connect my xbox headset either seeing it's not wireless.

Simple guide to what the "dots" mean. The "purple" thing - is your guide as it shows you where and how high you are in relation to the runway. You should notice it moves. In this image the approach is pretty much perfect. If the purple thing was at the too high bit - simply, your too high on approach. Similarly if it was "too the too far right area". Your too far to the right of the runway.

I've been busy downlaoding scenery and aircrafts for FSX that I've only done three flights :p.

I'll post some screenshots later tommorow or the next day Mark.
