Gilchrist smashed the Punjab bowlers to all parts of the park

Deccan Chargers gave an imposing performance against Knigs XI Punjab and left the other teams plenty to play for the semi-finals spot. The match went down to the last over but Deccan Chargers' batsman had done enough to upset Priety Zinta's side. Skipper Adam Gilchrist and VVS Laxman injected a dash of nitro fuel to the run chase, adding 151 for the second wicket. Andrew Symonds finished off the game with a boundary of Yuvraj Singh's over and three balls left. This was in response to the target set by the Kings XI Punjab of 172, mainly thanks to a brilliant innings by the Sri Lankan duo of Mahela Jayawardena and Kumar Sangakkara.

Bangalore celebrate after seeing the back of Tendulkar

Royal Challengers Bangalore have done their part and have kept their hopes of making the semi-finals alive with a comfortable 30-run win over leaders Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League match at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. The Royal Challengers dominated from start to finish after being sent in by the Mumbai Indians captain Sachin Tendulkar. The openers Jacques Kallis and Rahul Dravid gave them a good start but it was Kevin Pietersen who exploited the dimensions of the Bangalore stadium with a powerful innings of 87 from 40 balls. In the end 178 was just too much for the Mumbai Indians, as their most experience top order failed to deliver and muchwas left on the young shoulders of Ajinkya Rahane and Ambati Rayudu. But they did give it a try with a 89-run stand for the third wicket between the two.

Gayle crushes Rajasthan's semi-finals hopes

Gayle's allround performance ended Rajasthan's hopes for a semi-final place

Chris Gayle's 2 for 31 with the ball and 53 from 61 balls with the bat helped Kolkata Knight Riders crush Rajasthan Royals' hopes of a semi-final place at the Eden Gardens. The match ended in a comprehensive victory for the Knight Riders, who completed the chase of 122, losing only the wicket of Chris Gayle along the way. Chris Gayle picked the wickets of struggling Naman Ojha and Faiz Fazal of consecutive balls and smashed four fours and two sixes in his innings of 53. Such a one-sided affair didn't look on the cards when Rajasthan opener, Graeme Smith and Naman Ojha, motored to 36 by the fifth over after being sent in. A couple of economical overs slowed Rajasthan, and worse followed when they lost two wickets in two balls to slip to 68 for 2. It was Graeme Smith's 71-ball 79 and Shane Watson's 14-ball 17 that pushed the target to triple figures.

Lee clinches Punjab a last over thriller

Brett Lee prepares to deliver his last over

Talk about pulling one from out of the hat. Defending a small total Kings XI Punjab's bowlers bowled economical spells to rock Chennai Super Kings' chase, and despite Matthew Hayden, Badrinath and Albie Morkel getting starts, Punjab hung on to complete a nerve-wracking four-run victory. Chennai hardly set a wrong foot forward from the time they lost the toss, striking at regular intervals and Doug Bollinger gave them a couple of early strikes, but failed to chase 128. Kumar Sangakkara had kept the innings alive with an important 43 with the support of Yuvraj Singh and it proved decisive in the end. Having struck twice early in the piece the task of bowling the last over, and defend 11 runs, came to Brett Lee. And what an over it turned out to be as he conceded just six from it.

Chargers eliminate Daredevils after thrilling eliminator

Gilchrist congrats RP Singh after the Super Over

The eliminator came into play for the first time in this season's IPL, Deccan Chargers and Delhi Daredevils slugging it out during one super over each after being tied at the end of a dramatic regulation 40 overs. The tie-breaker lasted all of nine balls as Rudra Pratap Singh bagged two Delhi wickets off his three deliveries to hand the Deccan Chargers a six-run win.

Deccan Chargers' Super Over: 2,W,1,0,1,6
Delhi Daredevils' Super Over: W,4,W.

It should have never got this close. The Deccan Chargers were cruising in their pursuit of 116, needing a mere 46 runs off 60 balls with seven wickets intact to knock the Delhi Daredevils out, when their innings unraveled sensationally against an inspired performance from Delhi's slow bowlers. They were left needing 13 runs off the final over, and five off the last ball, when VVS Laxman clubbed Paul Collingwood to the deep midwicket boundary to tie the match and bring the one-over eliminator into play. The Deccan Chargers managed only ten runs from the over but RP Singh, entrusted with the defence, uprooted the off stumps of Virender Sehwag and Paul Collingwood with the three deliveries to secure a victory that should have been achieved without so much sweating.
