I'm going to tempt the you-know-what atop the thing just to wind up the Aussies...

Who should be the new Australian Test captain when Ricky Ponting gets fired for losing the Ashes?

The main problem I can see is that most the obvious candidates are too old. Do they go with youth and Clarke, so they so what they should have done last time and give it to Warne or do they find a stop-gap like Gilchrist until Clarke is ready?

Vote here and keep the comments about English smugness and arrogance to a minimum.

P.S. Anyone who mentions this thread to me ever again should England lose at the Oval will receive an automatic life ban from the forum!!!

I voted for langer, cos i think there are about 6 name there who should be dropped~:

Matthew Hayden
Damien Martyn
Simon Katich
Adam Gilchrist
Jason Gillespie
Michael Kasprovicz

Out of the rest :

McGrath ..too old no long term future as captain.

Clarke ..to young/inexperinced and bats to irresponsibly.

warne.. will never happen..too many "off field antics"

i dont think ponting will get fired, just because he had a poor series doesnt mean he will get fired

look at his record before this series as a captain

IF (only if) Ponting is fired, it should be either Gilchrist (one bad series mean nothing) or Warne (he might be famous for his off field antics, but he is more famous for his on field skills. He is also the only player in this Ashes team who not only didn't crumble under pressure, but also raised his standards of play - especially in batting).

Tait captain and Hayden vice captain..LOL!

I'd say Warney..may still happen judging by his eventful career

It is hard to pick a captain,

If you want a long lasting captain then I dont think you could pick any of the players mentioned in the poll because they are old by the time they reach the world cup some of them will reach their 40s.

I would go for Gilchrist! He has that loads of experience and until Clarke gets more exposure, Gilchrist can lead the team admirably. But I feel the days of dominance for this side is over! Signs of cracking have started to appear

I want Warne to be captain for some time, but I don't see that happening.

There is absolutly no need for Ponting to lose captaincy. So Australia lost a few test matches. Big deal. Every side loses once and a while. Not making excuses but Australia have been without McGrath or playing with him at half fitness for the last 3 games. One bowler doesn't sound like much and isn't the entire problem but when you have players like Gillespie and Kaspa.. who arn't in form and you have to debut a new bowler, not having the experiance and leadership of McGrath is very bad. I feel Australia have let themselves down in all 3 aspects of the game however, Batting, Bowling and Fielding. Ponting has done all he could and the run out incident, I don't blame him for. It just shows how much it means to him, how hard hes been working.

Australia are going through a rough patch, I don't know why but they can play much better then they have been in this ashes series and there have been some great games. Pontings record as captain is fantastic. I hate people who try and pin all their problems on one player. Especially when that player has been a standout in the series. Ponting has made a few bad calls but then again so have Vaughan, so does every captain.

Ponting to me doesn't have the cricketing brains. He has made some shockers in this series and the previous ones. He doesn't know when to attack or when to defend. Gilly showed in India he has the lot. He can step up with the bat and make good tactial calls.

It seems like ponting doesnt look the same ponting under pressure,

Ponting (and the team) is just frustrated, things arent going there way. The atitude change from this series compared to the last series against Pakistan is unbelievable....Fielding is crap, theres no 'fire' in thier belly and there seems to be no agression any more....

But if Lehmann was still in the test team he should be captain, a brilliant cricketing brain.

Warne would be a good captain, but I don't think Ponting will be dropped just because we might lose the ashes
