New Zealand Domestic Season

The fixtures for the upcoming summer have been announced, and they look quite a lot different to what we've seen over the last few seasons. The HRV Cup has been mixed in with the Plunket Shield to get matches on every Friday night leading up the new year (which will again be purely HRV Cup), so it'll be interested to see how that works.

I've updated the first post as well.

----------

This is how we're shaping up for our HRV Cup three-peat:

1. Overseas player?
2. Lou Vincent
3. Anaru Kitchen
4. Colin de Grandhomme
5. Gareth Hopkins
6. Colin Munro
7. Reece Young
8. Daryl Tuffey
9. Bruce Martin
10. Michael Bates
11. Mitchell McClenaghan/Bhupinder Singh

(Minus Guptill, Mills, and Chris Martin)

If we can get a good overseas batsman then even without Guptill our batting still looks decent. Mills will hopefully be available to beef up our pace attack, but the loss of Hira will be massive.

I could see this being a disaster tbh. Twenty20 matches in early November?? On a Friday night?? you've got to be kidding me. The whole attraction behind the HRV cup was going down on a Sunday afternoon to watch the game. I suppose they will get a boost in TV viewers though which makes me think sky is purely behind the move. Not a fan of spreading the competition over 2 months either what was wrong with how it was?

Also it seems there are a lot less televised games, I'm sure at least 20 were on tv last year where as now I can only see 11.

There are 12 Friday night games, plus I assume that they'll be one game broadcasted on most of the other days where there are games (like last season), so but my calculations there should be over 20 televised games assuming that they're still going to broadcast games on days other than Friday.

I think our HRV Cup games are going to be played on Eden Park number one, so that should be interesting. It's great (for me) to see the other domestic matches returning to Eden Park number two as well. You hear everyone complaining about how far away from the city Eden Park is, but really it's only a stone throw away compared to Colin Maiden.

From what I can see the only televised games are the Friday night ones if this is correct.

According to that the preliminary final and final aren't going to be televised, so I'd say that it's incomplete because I assume that they will be. Obviously I'm only guessing, but I'd find it very strange if they don't televise a single match that's not on Friday, especially considering that the coverage has slowly grown since the start of the competition, so it would be weird just to almost cut it in half this season. They might be cutting it back if the ratings were poor last season or something though.

Ryder's showing some promising signs, Sinclair is smashing NZ bowling attacks like usual, Brownlie scored a century and Astle is making quite a few runs but not taking many wickets. Some good signs I guess

Redmond made a mockery of a very weak looking Canterbury attack. Like you say Astle took a pounded, but was more than handy with the bat. Wellington's chase could be interesting tomorrow if Ryder can find an ally. Also I can't believe that the HRV Cup starts on Friday!

The same thing re Astle can be said about Bracewell. He got smashed around by Ryder in the first innings, but came back with 85 off 94 with the bat. Ryder's giving Wellington a chance in their chase, but like I said above he needs to find an ally.

Wtf Ryder, 291 off 249 carrying over his not out from the first innings!

Our dwindering spin stocks went as follows:

Todd Astle - 1/42 (12) & 1/105 (24)
Mark Craig - 1/35 (15) & 5/120 (45.3)
Tim Johnston - 5/105 (41) & 1/91 (27)
Tarun Nethula - 2/58 (14) & 1/97 (14)
Jeetan Patel - 0/80 (18) & 0/45 (22)
Luke Woodcock - 2/72 (18) & 2/20 (6)

Just wait for Sodhi to bowl :spy

I'm still waiting since he didn't play for the scum ND tonight. :p

I'm not sure what to make of this new Friday night orientated HRV Cup format. Obviously it's great to have domestic cricket on TV at this time of year, but it just looks like it's going to heavily advantage/disadvantage some teams depending on when their matches fall.

I'm not sure what de Boorder was smoking... Why would you bowl Broom in the 16th over with a short leg side boundary, when you've got two genuine pace bowling all-rounders who end up not bowling out.

Yep de Boorder had a complete meltdown. That one over lost them the game. I'm not a fan of this Friday night stuff at all tbh, I know its better for tv but it just seems ridiculous that its going to take 2 and a half months for it to end. Anyone that does take an interest in the competition is surely going to lose interest after a month or so.

Really impressed with Duffy btw great that we have a few really good young pace bowling prospects atm.

I don't really see that as a problem. Like there's one game a week purely for TV, and at the end of the two months it's only going to be a handful of rounds in, so you'll be able to just jump in and start following it at that stage if you want. I can't see too many people complaining that it's too dragged out after the diet if T20 cricket we've had over the last couple of months.

There's still going to be two Plunket Shield matches during the week anyway, which is actually what I think the problem is. I.e. ND and Otago played a T20 last night, and they're starting a FC game tomorrow. That can't be good for our FC cricket at all, especially for these youngsters who already get screwed around between the formats. Like did you see the ND team last night, all of their domestic batsmen had averages of under 20 despite being good FC domestic players. An example of this is Williamson, like what the hell is he doing playing T20 cricket, he should be focusing on being the best at FC cricket that he can be. You have a team like Otago.

On the positive side of things, if they had a "window" like they've had in the past with the blackcaps playing in it, we wouldn't get to see the likes of Duffey. Also it's getting into the summer, and there wouldn't be any cricket on with without this because the blackcaps are playing watching the rain in the middle of the night our time, and I'd rather watch domestic cricket than watch them atm anyway.

I don't know, maybe I need to give it some more time. I think I just liked the Sunday afternoons better for going down to watch a game, but still its great to have some cricket on a Friday night. I think they need to find the right way of structuring the domestic season and stick with it there has been far too many changes in the past couple of seasons for my liking.

Yeah I agree I'd much rather watch some domestic cricket than the blackcaps as well. I think Duffy is still good enough that he would make it even with the blackcaps in there but I see your point. The competition standard does take a bit of a hit without the blackcaps there though, if ND didn't have those two poms they might've struggled for 120.
