New Zealand Tour of India, November 2010/11

Yea I'd say our batting is pretty much sorted for the next few years. Once Williamson moves up to 3, we can have:

McIntosh
McCullum
Williamson
Taylor
Ryder
Browlie/Wells/Stewart/Broom/many other domestic players
Vettori
Keeper (van Wyk, McGlashan, Young, de Boorder [Hopkins is too old])

For once our bowling is the main problem. Imagine if Bond and O'Brien were still playing. We would actually have a decent team.

Southee to smash Sreesanth! :D

Williamson looks suspect against the pace bowlers, we need to see how he performs against other attacks. Technically he looks very good, but I don't think he utilizes it to his full potential. Doesn't have the timing or placement from what I can see.

So in three innings, two of which he's brought up milestones in your've concluded that he's suspect against pace bowling and doesn't have very good timing or placement? That probably goes against everything that was said of Williamson well before his test debut. His record on the two quickest pitches in New Zealand (Cobham Oval and The Basin) is fantastic.

I don't know that the WACA was particularly bowler friendly, but such innings are few, for sure. How few, it's hard to say.

W.A.C.A back then was at its peak when it came to amount of serious bounce it got based on all the footage of that innings & my knowledge of test history TBF. So just like past Kensington Oval & Sabina Park pitches, Perth was a bowler friendly deck in the "bouncy" sense. Compared to greentop bowling friendly deck.

But yea to my knowledge again, the Fredericks knock is the only one of its kind.

I think maybe in the Golden Age, there were at the very least average attacks on very helpful pitches getting blasted. There were several noted free scorers in that era and while the stats aren't as consistently detailed as today, we do know for example that Trumper scored a hundred before lunch on the first day of a Test in which no team scored more than 299. In any era, that would have been a memorable start to a match, much less one that was wrapped up in 3 days.

Yea i'm aware of that Trumper innings. But in the golden age you didn't have fast bowlers of a Lillee, Marshall, Trueman, Hadlee, Imran etc calibre & that Trumper innings was againts spin mainly on a uncovered wicket (an unfair advantage to the bowlers). So given those factors i dont really take much note to what occured in much pre war cricket.

I see New Zealand has declared. The target is 327 runs with 30 overs remaining. I am just wondering whether Sehwag will go after this. It's pretty difficult to achieve this target. Most likely they will draw the match after 15 overs.

Anyone fancy a bet?
According to the bet site linked to cricinfo (bet365), you can still pick up a dollar for every five hundred dollars you put on a draw.

Can I place more money than I theoretically have?

Say I put down 50 million. That's $100,000 I make.

And if I lose, I run away.

Realistically though, I could place $50,000 and get $100.

One of Sehwag's rare 2nd innings performances, as usual he did it in style. Certainly is a week for 200+ scores, seems to me we have a few too many flat pitches going around.

Bloody McCullum played brilliantly in these two days, he saved NZ from a loss.

And more tweaking, Zak is gone for next test, so another draw I think.

Ishant and Sreesanth for the next test. I think it should be Unadkat and Ishant for the next test. Drop Sreesanth. He hasnt done anything in the last three tests he has played. Lets give NZ an unknown quantity in Unadkat. I would go for that, but I know Dhoni will opt for the more safer route of Sreesanth and Ishant.

Next one in Nagpur? Holy damn!!! This could be a 0-0 result, and it will be horrible for India.

With Zaheer out of the picture, I think the best India can hope for is a draw now. The Kiwi's have played really well to compete evenly with India.

Funny how 2 countries, with more or less the same conditions and culture have produced such contrasting cricket. India - great batsmen but struggled with seamers. Pak - great seamers but struggled with batsmen.

How about a win for New Zealand ;) No one's considering that and it is definitely possible.

NZ squad for the ODIs named:

Squad: Daniel Vettori (capt), Grant Elliott, Martin Guptill, Gareth Hopkins, Jamie How, Brendon McCullum (wk), Nathan McCullum, Andy McKay, Kyle Mills, Jesse Ryder, Tim Southee, Scott Styris, Ross Taylor, Daryl Tuffey, Kane Williamson

Good to see Styris and How there. I don't think there's anything wrong with that squad really.

From that squad you guys definitely have your best side you can field. Although pretty much the same side that played Bangladesh plus Styris who should boost the middle order. In a full strength NZ side I don't see How in it but he certainly went well during the Emerging players tournament.

How do they get results in Indian FC cricket?
Considering those matches are only four days long...

Our ODI squad looks more or less the best we could pick, except Oram who's still out.

Our line-up will porbably look like:

1. Brendon McCullum (wk) (or Gareth Hopkins if he gets injured)
2. Jesse Ryder
3. Martin Guptill (or Jamie How)
4. Ross Taylor
5. Scott Styris
6. Kane Williamson
7. Daniel Vettori (capt)
8. Nathan McCullum
9. Kyle Mills
10. Daryl Tuffey (or Andy McKay/Grant Elliott)
11. Tim Southee

I guess they may try and bulk up our batting with either Elliot or How over Tuffey or Southee. You'd probably back Ryder, Stryis, Williamson and Elliot to get through 10 - 20 overs, therefore you'd only need the four bowlers/bowling AR's, hence Tuffey or Southee would miss out. Oram would really just link our batsmen and our bowlers in at seven, as Vettori's not really suited there in the ODI game.

I really like that team, certainly good enough to challenge the top teams around. We bat down to 8, even 9 because Mills is no mug with the bat. Even with that strong batting line-up we have many bowling options, 7 quality ones in fact.

Tuffey is pretty handy with the bat and Southee can have his moments as well. You certainly don't have a Martin like batsmen in there.
