New Zealand tour of India (Sept-Oct 2016)

Suresh Raina recalled for NZ ODIs | Cricket | ESPN Cricinfo

India ODI squad for first 3 ODI's
: Rohit, Rahane, Kohli, Pandey, Raina, Dhoni, Pandya, Axar, Jayant, Mishra, Bumrah, Kulkarni, Umesh, Mandeep, Jadhav

So as expected, Dhawan is dropped and Rahane is likely to open with Rohit with Mandeep as the backup opener. I am a bit surprised by Raina's inclusion since he hasn't done that well lately to guarantee a spot in the squad let alone final 11. I am hoping that Kedar starts the series before Raina since he has a hundred to his name from that Zimbabwe tour. Happy to see they have picked Hardik Pandya over Binny and I am looking forward to seeing Hardik in the ODI series. Another surprise is that they have dropped Sran which is weird because he was the best bowler in the ODI series against Zimbabwe. They could have included Sran in place of Jayant Yadav who is unlikely to feature in any of the matches. Jayant is a good longer format bowler but his limited over stats are not very impressive. He is a good bowler but too early to throw him into limited overs squad. They have only picked three fast bowlers instead of four. No surprises in the exclusion of Shami, Ashwin and Jadeja considering the injuries and long home season that we have. They clearly want to keep Shami, Ashwin and Jadeja fit for all the 13 tests and therefore they don't feature in the list.
It's not official that Dhawan is dropped. He wasn't picked as he is injured. Same goes to Rahul.

Oh wow. No Ashwin, Jadeja. Very interesting team selection - no problems with giving Raina another go. I like it.

Why not Shami.. He's bowling pretty well now![DOUBLEPOST=1475765263][/DOUBLEPOST]And also Sran

Its in the title - Sahmi is rested ! And rightly so I think[DOUBLEPOST=1475765422][/DOUBLEPOST]The bowling does look a bit thin on experience actually - but you never know who might step up and perform.

What about Sran?

That I am not sure. He could have been picked in place of Kulkarni maybe
Dhoni seems to like Kulkarni for some reason. Sran is a better option, he has good pace, he is leftie pace bowler, and would pair well with whoever is the other fast bowler in the XI. Why is Raina back?? I don't feel very confident he can do well.....

Dhawan is not half bad as everyone are talking about. He is like mini Bhuvi. Handful in starting overs.

You are right. It slipped from my mind that Dhawan is injured.

Dhawal as you rightly pointed out is a pretty good new ball bowler so I don't mind his inclusion. However, bowling does look very short with selectors deciding to go with only 3 fast bowlers. If Bumrah has a bad day, death bowling can be a concern.

Who would you guys take in Raina's place

I think he should be given another opportunity because he has done well in the past and has age on his side. Indian wickets will suit him too

You mean Kulkarni? Not Dhawan. Dhawan is just as bad in ODIs as he is bad in Tests

He might be talking about Rishi Dhawan, not Shikhar

^^True !

But I think Rishi fits the "mini Bhuvi" description more than Shikhar :spy

Just guessing at this point

Rishi is not as good as Bhuvi though. I think zwarrior meant Kulkarni and accidently wrote Dhawan... Rishi is quite irrelevant to the discussion..
