For people who are saying Rahul doesn't have patience, you lot haven't watched him play in domestic matches. He was so consistent, patient in all the seasons of Ranji Trophy he has played. Just go watch domestic matches. Don't rant about him by seeing only T20 matches. Also, even in internationals, he got his 3 centuries with SR of just around 50- 55. It's not patience to you people ? LOL
And Gambhir doesn't deserve to be selected ahead of Rahul. To be frank, there are many players who have done a better job than Gambhir in domestic league in past 2 years. For example, just look at Uthappa or Iyer. Considering the performance in domestic leagues, they deserve more chance than GG.
Yes, GG should be the back up opener instead of Dhawan ( if we are considering only GG and Dhawan ). But, he should never replace Rahul or Vijay in their current form.
You talk about domestic, I talk about the way he performed in international circuit.
Gambhir has the potential to control the things when things aren't in control, which comes only with enormous experience. With England and Australia touring (and the quality of bowling they have), India should be looking to make sure we have proper opener, instead of someone who is fairly new to such things. Agreed, if he isn't exposed now in home conditions, it'll be difficult for Rahul to do it in away conditions. But team comes first, not Gambhir or Rahul.
Indian team lags experienced cricketers who can control the situation when things go wrong. Of late, things have never gone wrong, but that doesn't mean we can take things from granted. The way Rahul tried to play against New Zealand and got out, that is what scares me.
Also remember Mike Hussey? He couldn't make it into the famous Australian line up even though he was a great domestic player. When there was some room for him, he came and cemented his spot.
There are many players like Manish Pandey, who seldom got chances. Manish Pandey was in great form in 2010 before ZA home test series. Unfit Rohit Sharma was roped into the squad because he had more experience. He remained unfit for the match, and as a result, we had to play Wriddhimann Saha as specialist batsmen.
^^ I would use Rahul the inexperienced guy get experienced. Remember Gambhir too "improved" while playing international. No one comes perfect from Domestic scenario
What do you mean by too "improved"? Sarcasm huh? No one comes perfect from domestic, but no one replaces someone who is better at doing certain things.
Inexperienced? Selectors chose the best 15 men to represent us at that time. They all had enough experiance of playing ODI cricket. It's just that we happened to come against Steve Smith AGAIN in the sem-final. Don't tell me you wanted Yuvraj or Gambhir in that squad because they didn't do anything to warrant their selection at that point of time. We can't just keep giving chances to the guys based on their past reputation. We have to move on.
Telling "We didn't have enough experience" to face the situation is entirely different from telling "Gautam Gambhir or Yuvraj were experienced enough to win semi final against Australia" and I told former sentence.
And yes- they were the then 15 best men from India, but that doesn't erase the fact that they were not properly experienced in Australian conditions when compared to Gauti and Yuvi, although both of them were not in form.
Bottom line: Don't derive things from what I say. That is an example I quoted to show where we failed (failed as in, we had no other option but to fail) in the past.
Post Scriptum: I'm a great fan of KL Rahul. These are just my opinions on longer formats. Don't derive an opinion that I hate KL Rahul or Karnataka or RCB. I'm from Karnataka and these are my views on a player.
