New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka, 2009

If there is one opener in domestic I have a feeling will succeed at International level it's Josh Brodie, he's already got a few high scores, that 100 he got against the Lions, proves he can take on quality bowling attacks. I still think he's a year or two from consideration, but I've got a real good feeling about him.
I remember seeing his name in the NZ A squad when they toured lions and I was shocked because he had played so few matches but he did well. He needs to prove himself in the one day form and get that average above 30 though. 28's good if you take account of that New Zealand isn't host to many batting tracks but not good enough for international standard.

And a temporary strike bowling solution would be Bradley Scott or Graeme Awldringe. (No Northern Districts bias there at all )

I say we use test matches as ODI warm-ups. We have to face the fact that we're hopeless at it.

I think we've got a decent pack of bowlers, guys like Tuffey on the sidelines etc. There's depth. Southee, Butler, etc.

The batting depth is what's worrying. Fulton and How are obviously very talented but they didn't make the step up to test level. I'd support How coming back after another season in domestic. He needs to have worked on a lot of stuff.

We've tried so many openers, they've all been the same. Do we go back to the How, Bell, Papps, Cumming? Matthew Bell has the record for most hundreds in domestic. If anyone's going to succeed it should be him. Isn't that what we lack? Hundred getters? Plus he's much less passive than McIntosh. Technique-wise they both have their issues.

I honestly don't think any of the current batting should be dropped until someone else really puts their hand up.

The clean sweep will give more points to SL,though they will be at No2 spot in test rankings...

That's the thing, our best domestic batsmen over the last few years have massive flaws in their techniques. Cumming plays around his pad, Sinclair doesn't move his feet, Fulton doesn't like the short ball, Matthew Bell doesn't move his feet too well either.

Because of this we've seen players picked for test match cricket far too early (Guptill, Flynn and even Tim Southee). Guptill looks the best out of all the openers tried but his record in FC is rather poor. Flynn also looks fairly solid but agin his FC record is pretty poor.

I agree we shouldn't drop anyone unless someone else is putting their hand up, but Tim McIntosh is never going to succed at the test level. Yes he might be able too bat time but how many failures are we going to see between those 50's and 100's?

New Zealand require another 312 runs with 4 wickets remaining

what if Oram and Vittori pulls it off? too much to ask from these 2. if NZ had 6 wickets in hand, it would have been even.

New Zealand require another 234 runs with 4 wickets and 67 overs remaining at a run rate of 3.49...

o great Oram's gone. Time for a Jeetan Patel century!

I would fly over to Sri Lanka and run the ground naked if Patel gets to 80.

Pfftttttt. Typical Oram. When we actually look as though we can win something (Still pretty unlikely at the time) he gets out. It was soft too. Oh well, hopefully Vettori can make a ton here.

Hopefully O'Brien can stay around long enough for Vettori to reach his century...

This is turning into a cracker...they could actually pull it off.:happy Long way to go but there is a sign of spirit in Black Caps camp. Daniel Vetorri is brilliant and stands head and shoulders above the rest of the team. Huge amount of respect for him. A real captain, a real leader and a bloody good cricketer!:) It wont last long though if O'Brien keeps playing shots like the last one I saw. Get your head down man and let the real blokes play the shots!!
