New Zealand tour of Sri Lanka, 2009

Yea I know what you mean :(

If we could just find two openers that averaged even 40 I reckon we'd go a lot better. A strike bowler would be nice also. We just need this young group of talent thats coming through (It's the best talent for a good 10-15 years) to come good at around the same time.

Hopefully Trent Boult can develop as a strike bowler. I think we wasted Lou Vincent and Richard Jones they were boh decent openers. If McIntosh and Guptill fail, Watling and Peter Ingram perhaps? (Although Ingram's getting old.) Shanan Stewart can open can't he?

could one of the more established batsmen not move to opener? this has reaped benefits for the other teams, heck, look what Watson achieved in the ashes, it wasn't superb but it would be good enough for NZ.

personally I think Ryder could open in tests, but that is a gamble as he's definitley the most gifted batsman you've got, you don't want to mess about his position or risk his wicket.

Yea I have high hopes for Trent Boult. Don't know where he is at the moment though. He hasn't featured in the NZ emerging squad, or the A team this off-season. Strange because he was in both teams last season. Plus given the fact he was in the Chappel-Hadlee series team earlier this year. I'd rate him right up there with Tim Southee though.

Peter Ingram, eghhhhh. Couldn't ever see him being a succes at the international level. Not in test cricket anyway. He might go alright in one day cricket.

Mitchell McClenaghan is one to watch out for though, he's very similar to Mitchell Johnson tbh. I'm picking him to have a big season this year. Mark Richardson was actually calling for him to be in the NZ team last season irrc.

Wanna throw in a middle order and a world class spinner in there as well? :p

Nah don't mess around with Ryder. Him and Taylor have to stay at four and five for mine. I've been calling for Brendon McCullum to move up the order and open. Since we don't have any top flight opening batsmen coming through at the moment I think it would be the best bet, we have players like Neil Broom that could come in and bat at six then. On NZ's tour of England last year McCullum was the reserve test opener, so the selectors have thought about it before.

McClenaghan did well against the England lions but he lacks experience. I saw him play against Auckland earlier this year and he wasn't impressive. With an econemy rate of 6+ and over in one dayers you'd say okay maybe just for the tests but then you see he averages 47 with the ball which gives you second thoughts.

I reckon Brent Hefford deserves a chance (although again a bit old.)

Oh and if Peter Ingram isn't good enough to open for New Zealand perhaps Josh Brodie migh develop into a decent opener.

Yea McClenaghan needs more time in domestic cricket, but he has that X-factor that a lot of our bowlers don't have. He'll bring that average down over time (Hopefully :p) He was getting the England Lions batsmen to jump around though (Or so I was told).

Agree about Josh Brodie though. I haven't seen too much of him but form the little I have seen I've been impressed.

Athough I think he might be a 4-5 day specialist as he is yet to make a one day appearance

Is it worth trying to make Rob Nicol an opener, because he should be given a chance in the NZ aquad but h probably won't get in because are middle orders pretty full up at the moment.

Nicol. He's off to Caterbury right. Yea I guess that would be his best option if he ever wanted to play for NZ. He can't be going to good if he couldn't make the Auckland team though, the middle order that is.

And Greg Hay can't be that great either if he can't make the Central Districts team either :sarcasm

He was the only New Zealand batter that could actually perform in all forms of the game part from Kane Williamson ;)

I just remember what Andy Moles said about Hay a few years back, I haven't actually seen that much of him tbh. But he dropped of the face of the earth pretty quickly.

Just another wasted talent in New Zealand Cricket.

If there is one opener in domestic I have a feeling will succeed at International level it's Josh Brodie, he's already got a few high scores, that 100 he got against the Lions, proves he can take on quality bowling attacks. I still think he's a year or two from consideration, but I've got a real good feeling about him.
