ICC World Twenty20 2009
Game 1: England vs Netherlands Live from Lord's
5th June, 2009

England post 135
(Tight Dutch bowling restricts England)

Lord's cricket ground was packed to the rafters as thousands of English, Dutch and neutral fans gathered to witness the opening game of the second ICC World Twenty20. At the coin toss Netherlands skipper Joean Smits won the toss and elected to bowl first on what seemed to be a hard surface favouring the batsmen. In their pre-match warm-ups the Dutch were looking a leniant side. England would have to be wary.

England openers James Foster on Twenty20 International debut and Ravi Bopara strode out into the middle to a huge round of applause. The Dutch were not going to open with Dirk Nannes but instead open with a new Right-Arm seamer from Pakistan named Mudassar Bukhari. Foster would have had some early nerves heading into his first T20 International but those nerves would have been settled when he dispatched a leg-side full toss from Bukhari over the boundary bringing up the first six of the Tournament.

Left-Arm seamer Dirk Nannes was set to bowl from the Pavilion End. The Australian is known for his high speeds reaching 92mph. Bopara's first ball was a bouncer clocking 90mph. Bopara gave Nannes a rise smile. However Bopara despatched the following ball to the fence moving him onto 6. In the final ball of Nannes' over he got some late movement going away from Foster and nearly got the edge.

Smits continued to bowl with Bukhari. However he was proving to be costly as in his 2 overs went for 19 runs. At the other end, Nannes was proving to be a handful. And with him Netherlands got their breakthrough dismissing Bopara. Nannes swung the ball into Bopara however Bopara's head fell and he was off-balance. Umpire Rudi Koertzen raised his slow finger as England were 26/1 in the 4th over.

The fall of Bopara brought big hitter, Kevin Pietersen to the crease. As he did to Bopara earlier Nannes bowled a bouncer to Pietersen who glided it towards the boundary. Foster was looking in superb touch as he smashed another half-volley from Bukhari into the small gap in the covers to bring up his first four of the Innings. Foster and Pietersen had a chat and discussed about taking singles. Foster have the strike to Pietersen and now it was Mudassar Bukhari in Pietersen's sights. Pietersen let one ball go through to the keeper but dispatched what seemed to be like a good delivery on middle stump over mid-wicket and over the ropes. Pietersen was proving to be a threat for the dutch as he had raced onto 11 off just 5 deliveries. The Dutch were delighted when they finally had him out. Nannes began his final over conseading just 10 runs. Pietersen attempted to clip an out-swinging delivery over mid-wicket. However with the extra swing he misjudged it and his off-stump was uprooted. Nannes bowled out with respective figures of 4-0-13-2.

In a surprise move, the England camp sent Sussex all-rounder Luke Wright into bat at number 4. Also, the experienced medium-pacer Edgar Schiferli came into bowl the 9th over with England on 53/2. Foster who was looking in good touch smashed the ball through the covers however some terrific fielding from Bas Zuiderent prevented the single. Schiferli strook the next ball. Foster premeditated before Schiferli had bowled as he edged toeards the leg-side. Schiferli followed him and in a dire attempt, Foster swept the ball high into the air. Mudassar Bukhari at fine leg sprinted around and judged the catch nicely as England lost 2 wickets for just 2 runs and now 54/3 heading into the 10th over.

Next in was none other than the captain Paul Collingwood. The skipper talked to Wright before taking guard. Also, Netherlands brought on 21 years old left-arm spinner Peter Seelaar. Wright and Collingwood rotated the strike before Wright managed to pounce on a short delivery from Seelaar and send it hurtling to the fence for Wright's first boundary.

However, Wright was struggling to get Collingwood on strike. As the pressure mounted on him, he attempted to paddle-sweep a full ball from Schiferli. The ball strook the pad and immediatly Smits & Schiferli went up for the appeal. Umpire Asad Raud was unmoved however he rose his finger much to Wright's disappointment. The dutch were pegging England back as in the 13th over, England were now 71/4 and now 150 was looking beyond the cards.

Most of the crowd were expecting Dimitri Mascarenhas to emerge from the pavilion. It was Owais Shah that came out and joined captain Collingwood. It was to prove to be a wise decsion. Shah wasted little time and dispatched his first two balls to the ropes giving England a much needed boost. After Seelaar and Schiferli bowled in tandem, Smits introduced Essex all-rounder Ryan ten Doeschate. In his opening over, he conceded only 7 runs. and heading into the 15th over England would require 10 runs an over in order to get a defendable total of 150.

Smits then continued to change his bowlers by bring on opener Daren van Bunge. Collingwood and Shah had a breif chat and knew that this was the bowler they had to attack. Shah smashed 2 more boundaries and Collingwood eneded the over in style by smashing his second boundary. A total of 14 runs coming off the over which got England past the 100 mark with 4 overs left. Collingwood and Shah's aggressive batting was just what England needed. However, Collingwood was not to remain till the end of the Innings.

Young left-arm spinner Peter Seelaar had bowled well giving away 14 runs in his 3 overs. Collingwood was bamboozled by a full flighted delivery by Seelaar. Advancing down the track, Collingwood attempted to over-hit the ball and attempted to put his bat back into the crease. Square-Leg umpire Asad Rauf called for the 3rd Umpire for the first time in the match. However, the captain knew he was gone well before the decsion. Collingwood had batted well making 22 runs off 20 balls.

Next man in was Dimitri Mascarenhas. A situation like this being tailor made for him. He wasted little time grasping hold of a full delivery and placing it wide of tom de Grooth placed on the boundary at mid-off. Seelaar held his nerve and tempted Mascarenhas to do the same again. Mascarenhas was not a person to miss out on a full half-volley. However as the ball went into the air Smits yelled out a huge "Catch It!!!!" For a moment or so it was thought that the ball was going to sail over de Grooth. Realising this, de Grooth leaped high into the air with both feet off the ground and took an outstanding catch! Mascarenhas was in shock and could not believe what had happened. All the dutch players rushed to de Grooth as England were now 112/6 with just 18 balls left in the Innings.

Young leg-spinner Adil Rashid joined Shah. Shah who was looking in goof form rescued England with a couple of lusty blows aswell as a huge six sailing over the grandstand. Unfortunatly he was starved of the strike in the later overs as Rashid and Broad managed a total of 4 off 12 balls. England did though reach a mere 135/7 in the allotted 20 overs with Owais Shah being the stand out player with *36 off just 21 balls. The Dutch will fancy their chances at this run-chase. However, they will have to contend with Anderson, Sidebottom & Broad who will be fired up and ready to go.

Pretty low score by England there. The Dutch need to just play sensible cricket and bat all 20 overs. If they do that they surely gonna win this match. Great writing and presentation Arslaan. KIU :clap

Top Work Arslan and lovely update! England have really been restricted by the dutch! But they don't have the strongest batting line up in the world. One thing is that the run rate should only be 6.8 unless the Netherlands are having less than 20 overs :p

Good update. Game going very evenly at the moment. England are short of 20 odd runs but i believe its good enough. They need their bowlers to well in the power play

Very impressed to see this back in action again. :) Good update mate, loving this work, keep it up.

Poor batting from England, and they'll have to bowl extremely well to defend that total.

Great stuff Arslaan.
