Welcome to another episode of unpicking domestic cricket shambles.

The President's Cup has started. It is the other 4 day competition in the season, with 7 departmental teams competing rather than regional teams.
Not just the other 4 day comp

It always seems funny to me when departmental sides like these play major domestic tournaments. Like one team is literally called Pakistan Television. And imagine the stream gets interrupted for the game and the players of the side are to blame

Bold of you to think these games are anywhere near being streamed on national TV

From what I've read here it's basically Mo Abbas vs a load of nepo-babies. What's not to love?
Funny thing is that guy who you're highlighting is actually there somewhat on merit. Hassan Nawaz, played for ISLU last year, was one of the highest runscorers in Kashmir PL. Just not a FC player.

44 5 wicket hauls is crazy from Abbas btw. Hopefully this comp helps his push for 1000 FC wickets too.

Yeah, was expecting Hassan Nawaz to play for ISLU again on the back of his white ball performance (in the second tier though, not List A level), but he most certainly is not a red ball player

Welcome to another episode of unpicking domestic cricket shambles.

The President's Cup has started. It is the other 4 day competition in the season, with 7 departmental teams competing rather than regional teams.

Teams:
Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL), Pakistan Television (PTV), State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA), Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Higher Education Commission (HEC) and Ghani Glass.

Ok, now that the basic info is done, time for the problems. Firstly, lets look at the SNGPL lineup for the first match:

View attachment 288187

This is a very strong lineup. 10 of the players have played international cricket and the 11th, Haseebullah, is being groomed to be Mohammad Rizwan's successor in the national team.

The problem with this? Everyone else is comparably trash. In fact, SNGPL, State Bank of Pakistan and Khan Research Laboratories seem to be the only teams that pick players on merit.

All the other teams have 2 or 3 capped/solid players and the others seem to be there to make up the numbers. Let's take a look at two of the captains in this first round:

:ar: Uzair Mumtaz (PTV):

Uzair is 19 years old and captained Gujranwala Giants in the Pakistan Junior League last year. Before today he had no FC experience whatsoever, and recently failed to make the Pakistan U19 squad for the Asia Cup/World Cup. The only reason I can think of for him captaining is he has some connections with PTV who own the team. Which leads me to my next case study...

:x: Moeez Ghani (Ghani Glass):

Notice how his last name is the same as the company's name? This is a 24 year old with no experience of professional cricket whatsoever. Now he's captaining at FC level, which leads me to conclude this is the owner's son or nephew.

Mark my words, this departmental cricket will end up being a hunting ground for rich kids going through the system through pure nepotism. The table will end up very lopsided, we might even see a few FC records broken. Half the teams are in it to win it, the others... are not. The lack of equity among departments will mean that even if every team tries to win and be a successful team, the richer companies will always end up with the better players due to the availability of cold hard cash. This comp is a disgrace to anyone talented enough to play and missing out because you don't know any rich old businessmen. I hope PCB come to their senses soon and either scrap this or fix it, but it's unlikely to happen anytime soon with Sethi or Ashraf at the helm. Failed country. Failed system.

EDIT: Have a look at this too

Whats the months for the QnE trophy?

And in terms of departmental cricket, it has always been a big problem. The issue is QnE cricket with regions didn't seem to be any better. The quality of FC bowlers is barely average and the batters are probably better.

The best cricketers in Pakistan do best in spite of the domestic structure rather than because of it.

If you mean regional cricket, I think it started somewhere Sept-Oct and just ended.

Atleast they largely pick players on merit and not on the whims of rich businessmen
