Governors XI v South Africa - Tea, Day 2

The South Africans have been dismissed for 189 to give the Governors XI a huge lead of 353 on the first innings. Shoaib Malik decided not to enforce the follow on, preferring to give his bowlers a rest and give his top order some more batting practice, Shadab Kabir in particular will be happy with the decision as it will enable him to try and make up for his first innings failure. Klusener holed out to Yasir Arafat at deep cover when he advanced down the wicket trying to hit a six off Shoaib Malik. Crookes was next to go when he hooked Fazl-e-Akbar to deep backward square where Yasir Arafat took his 3rd outfield catch of the innings. Ntini clipped a leg cutter to square leg where Shabbir Ahmed held the catch to give Fazl-e-Akbar a 5 wicket haul. Ntini will be hoping for some early wickets in the Governers XI second innings to stake a claim for a test spot after a dissappointing performance on the first day.

Governor's XI v South Africa - Drinks, Session 3, Day 2

The Governor's XI have continued to pound the South African bowling even though the pitch is now deteriorating and the odd ball is keeping low. Ntini had first innings century maker Faisal Athar caught at 4th slip by Hall in his first over but Shadab Kabir and Faisal Iqbal have both scored half centuries in a stand that is now past the hundred mark. Faisal Iqbal dominated the strike and the scoring early on but Shadab Kabir is now scoring freely after getting a life on 17 when Klusener dropped him off Ntini at fine leg. Faisal Iqbal reached his 50 off 45 balls while Shadab Kabir took 40 balls to reach the mark. The lead has now been stretched to 460, it will be interesting to see when Shoaib Malik decides to declare and let his bowlers loose on a demoralised South African batting line up.

Governers XI 107-1 (15 overs) Extras 1

Shadab Kabir 50* (41 balls) 5 fours
Faisal Iqbal 52* (46 balls) 6 fours

Faisal Athar c Hall b Ntini 4 (3 balls) 1 four 4-1

M.Ntini 8-0-63-1
D.Terbrugge 3-0-19-0
D.Crookes 4-0-25-0

Governor's XI v South Africa - Stumps Day 2

The South Africans enjoyed their best hour of the match as they slowed the Governor's XI scoring rate and picked up 3 quick wickets. Ntini had Shadab Kabir caught at second slip by Bacher off an edged cover drive, then Terbrugge was reintroduced into the attack and struck twice in his first over back. Faisal Iqbal was lbw playing back to a ball that kept low and then Asim Kamal missed a leg side slog and was bowled off stump. The lead has been stretched to 523 however and the Governor's XI are still in control of this match. Klusener only used the three bowlers who are fighting it out for the final spot in the test XI during the two hour session in an attempt to get them all into form as this is their only warm up game on tour.

Governor's XI 170-4 (30 overs) Extras 1

Hasan Raza 32* (21 balls) 7 fours

Governor's XI v South Africa - 12.03 pm, Day 3

The Governor's XI have declared with a lead of exactly 600 and now have 11 hours of play left in the match in which to bowl the South Africans out. The South Africans picked up two wickets in the first hour of play on the third day as their pace bowlers, particularily Terbrugge, put in a much improved performance. Hasan Raza reached his second half century of the match off 37 balls before falling lbw to a ball from Terbrugge that kept low. Shoaib Malik went one run shy of his 50 when he edged a yorker length delivery to a diving Bacher at second slip off Klusener. Terbrugge was rewarded for attacking the stumps with 3 wickets and may have forced his way ahead of a dissapointing Ntini in the quest for the third pace bowlers spot in test XI. South Africa will be hoping for a better batting effort in their second innings, particularily from their top order.

Governor's XI 247-6 declared (41 overs) Extras 3 (3nb)

Governor's XI v South Africa - Lunch, Day 3

The South Africans have got off to a better start in their second innings, reaching 60-1 at one stage before a couple of quick wickets spoiled their mornings work. Bruyns leg glanced a Shabbir Ahmed outswinger to Fazl-e-Akbar at square leg early on and it looked as if another collapse against the new ball was on the cards. Bacher and McKenzie began to score quickly to repair the damage, both batsmen playing fine pull shots for four in front of square, and both were looking untroubled until they lost their wickets with the total in the sixties. Bacher pulled a Fazl-e-Akbar bouncer to Shabbir Ahmed at square leg, and then next over McKenzie flicked an outswinger from Yasir Arafat to Fazl-e-Akbar in an identical dismissal to Bruyns. Dippenaar and Klusener have begun to build a solid partnership and have seen the South Africans to lunch with no further loss.

South Africa 87-3 (15 overs) Extras 8

B.Dippenaar 13* (13 balls)
L.Klusener 10* (16 balls)

M.Bruyns c Fazl-e-Akbar b Shabbir Ahmed 7 (9 balls) 14-1

Shabbir Ahmed 5-0-38-1

Lol GrayNicolls, youre a Hampshire fan through and through. I like to give as many players a chance to shine as I can (hence Strydom and Crookes getting a run), and Boucher was injured at the time this series was set and Pothas got a run in the ODI team. He is a good player, he could have played a fair bit of international cricket if it wasnt for Boucher.

Governor's XI v South Africa - Drinks, Session 2, Day 3

The South Africans have lost 2 more wickets in the hour after tea to leave them staring down the barrel of a 3 day defeat. Klusener clipped a straight ball from Yasir Arafat to Shoaib Malik at square leg after looking untroubled. Dippenaar played a solid innings before being caught at deep cover by Danish Kaneria off Shoaib Malik from his first lofted shot in a dissappointing end to a patient innings. Hall was batting solidly after his first innings failure and was not out at drinks. The Governor's XI pace bowlers have been expensive, bowling a number of no balls.

L.Klusener c Shoaib Malik b Yasir Arafat 16 (26 balls) 100-4

Governor's XI v South Africa - Tea Day 3

The South Africans lost Hall soon after the drinks break when he popped up a catch on the offside from a ball pitching in the rough from Shoaib Malik, Shadab Kabir took his second excellent catch of the game as he dived forward from second slip. Pothas and Strydom then added an unbroken 58 run partnership to take them to tea. Pothas was very solid while Strydom played beautifully as he drove balls through and over cover for four from Shoaib Malik and lofted a four over cover from a Yasir Arafat outswinger. The Governor's XI pace bowlers continued to struggle with their no ball problem with Shabbir Ahmed in particular being expensive.

Governor's XI v South Africa - Match finished, late Day 3

After previously looking innocuous, Danish Kaneria took a sensational hat-trick to dismiss the South Africans for 224 and wrap up a comprehensive victory for the Governor's XI. All 3 wickets in the hat-trick fell to catches at bad pad on the offside from wrong un's pitched into the rough, the last one taken brilliantly by Hasan Raza, who dived full length to his right and hung on one handed. Earlier Strydom had lofted a catch to Shabbir Ahmed at deep cover off Shoaib Malik to end an entertaining innings, before Pothas and Crookes dug in against the spinners. Crookes finished not out to complete a useful allround game but his perfomance paled into significance compared to that of his off spinning counterpart, Shoaib Malik, who was awarded the man of the match award for an excellent allround game. The South Africans went down by a massive 376 runs and will need more than the return of Kallis to be competitive with the bat in the tests.
