Pakistan Tour of South Africa and Zimbabwe - April / May 2021

Fakhar's priority should've been getting in, he failed in that. Other than standing in his way, I don't see any reason why a keeper or fielder shouldn't do what De Kock did (if De Kock was doing something other than pointing at all).

To borrow an analogy from football, it is similar to an opposition player calling for a pass from you in a tight situation (which afaik isn't allowed, at least from when I played back in the day). You could argue "oh but he should know the voices of his teammates surely" but in the thick of the moment, it is something that you don't notice. I wouldn't mind this happening if it is in reaction to an obvious unfair advantage gain like in the mankad with the batsman overstepping but is there something like that here?

And in any case, there are clear laws against fake fielding. They've been applied before in such situations (Labu got a penalty of five runs if I'm correct). I'll say what I did for the mankad issue, it was the umpire's fault here thoroughly to not call it for what it was. QdK's behavior could be described with a thousand adjectives from cheeky to smart to unsporting, but the one objective thing that matters is that it was illegal and he got away with it.

I'm pretty sure there's no rule in football that you can't call for a pass from an opposition player. If there is I'm glad I gave up watching. :lol

Labuschagne got done for faking a throw. Which is still, in my opinion, perfectly fine, but you can at least judge it more objectively. There's too much grey area in this situation. Whether it was an intentional effort to deceive Fakhar or not it's rare you will get concrete evidence that there is a malicious intent. Like a mankad, it's the batsman's fault for allowing himself to get out.

The fake calling a pass would come under the "verbal distraction of an opponent in play or during a restart" under unsporting behaviour that can be cautioned. I get why that is funny to a viewer but it is incredibly annoying on the pitch. Which is why you seldom see it I suppose, in addition to it not being legal.

Very off-topic, but my first encounter with this rule funnily enough came in practice wherein a teammate of mine who knew he couldn't win the ball from the opponent's star player called out his name after getting skinned. The latter noticing that he was up against turned around and passed it back. Was pretty funny and we all did have a laugh about it but our coach sternly told us it wasn't legal and berated the player who got deceived. Maybe if he had a Zaman like performance, he'd have got some sympathy that day.

I don't think you need a lot of evidence beyond everything that did happen for it to not be clear about his intention at the very least. The arm's clearly out there even after the throw and Bavuma was praising QdK for being cheeky. Not to mention the commentators analyzing it to death to conclude it indeed was smart play and having a laugh about it. The only reason why this has got a lot of attention is because Zaman was close to a double century but even if this were a tail-ender getting dismissed for a diamond duck, my opinion wouldn't change.

You're right in that Zaman is the only person who could have changed the outcome other than the umpire, but the fact that the latter get away scotfree while Zaman gets criticized for slacking off (if you can even call it as such) when he had faced over half the balls in that innings for Pakistan and nearly carried the team home all alone is unfair. Full credit to Zaman for completely accepting responsibility, it would have been easy for him to make at least a snide remark but he did not do so.

My playing 11 for the next match :

Fakhar
Imam
Haider
Babar
Rizwan
Sarfaraz
Faheem
Nawaz
Hasan Ali
Haris Rauf
Shaheen

De Kock's actions do look deceitful after watching it on replay but when watching the match live it didn't seem so illegal. If anything, it's still Fakhar's job to get back into the crease and he shouldn't rely on the oppositions call to aid his decision making. In the clip he barely watched the ball and instead focused on his partner getting in than himself. Hard to critique the guy after a killer knock and the fact that he was tired but he wasn't particularly aware in the moment. People are comparing this situation to the Labuschagne fake fielding incident, difference is Marnus was more deliberate in his actions in that you could clearly tell he was fake throwing. However, the QDK incident is open to more than one interpretation and there are countless implications you could make by QDK pointing to the bowlers end. To me, it didn't seem very deliberate watching it live and more so Fakhar wasn't aware of the ball in the moment.

Anyways on to the match, can someone tell me why Haider Ali isn't playing? Guy looked pretty good in the PSL and more so when he made his international debut last summer. He is the right guy to bat 5, and I think he's more of a power hitter than Asif Ali, which I have no idea what knocks he has to prove that he's a big hitter besides a couple of high strike rate knocks against Zimbabwe and a fifty against England.

It's going to take a big effort from SA to win this game with the core of bowling attack gone along with QDK and Miller. Pakistan would be disappointed not to clinch the series here,

No idea why he is not playing he is far better than Parchi Asif Ali.

Reg fake fielding controversy, I personally feel it was intentional. I'm not basing that by what happened after the dismissal (i.e. QDK giggling about it - that could have been a genuine reaction. Even I would have laughed if that had happened) But the signalling did happen after the throw was in motion and I'm pretty certain QDK was aware that it was coming to him at that point in time. I think he will be let off owing to lack of very conclusive evidence (as the gesture is open to multiple interpretations) and the benefit of doubt will probably save him. As per the law he should be penalized.

Having said that, I also feel that the law is not right. I actually think it could make things interesting. Fake fielding might make the batsmen stay more attentive (we all complain about how heavily biased the limited over format is in favor of batsmen so why not put this burden on them). I'm all for it honestly. It also adds for some entertainment too post the dismissal.

Third, even if Fakhar remained not out, Pakistan was not winning but he might have scored Pakistan's first ODI double century.
I could be wrong but doesn't Fakhar already have a double century in ODIs?

Yes, I forgot about the 210 against Zimbabwe. Was lazy to edit it :p ! Plus nobody corrected my mistake, so thought.. nobody read :noway

Babar Azam needs to 36 more runs to become no.1 ODI batsmen i hope he
becomes no.1 ODI batsmen today.

Lineup for today

Fakhar
Imam
Babar
Rizwan
Sarfraz
Nawaz
Faheem
Hasan
Qadir
Shaheen
Rauf

I would’ve like to see Haider instead of Sarfraz. The rest is fine.

Apparently Fakhar and Imam have switched bodies :p
If he can accelerate like in the last match, don’t really mind.

Sarfaraz over Haider? Nawaz at #6? One of the best keepers in the world being forced to leave his gloves for Sarfaraz? I don't understand what's wrong with our think-tank.

Sarfaraz will be nearly 36 by the time of 2023 World Cup, and Haider would be 23. Our management can't understand this simple fact.

Hasan Ali and Shaheen should have a good game today, and Nawaz knows South African conditions very well, so my hopes for him are high too.
