Cricket: Wright tips surprises in latest squad - Cricket - NZ Herald News

Looks like they'll be taking a punt on a young guy, interesting to see if it's just for one of the formats or both.

Most likely they've chosen them just for the T20's in that case it's probably either Milne or Sherlock with Noema-Barnett & Bracewell being the dark horses for the spot.

If it's for the tests its most likely a bowler like Boult, Beard or Astle, the only other possibility is a wicketkeeper like De Boorder or Austin-Smellie.

T20s, I reckon Nicol could very well play. Possibly Bates with his death bowling. Sherlock's looked good too. Bracewell and Noema-Barnett possibly, but I still reckon Milne's too young.

I don't think Beard will play with Vettori due to both being left arm spinners. Astle got heaps of turn in today's domestic match and has looked good in the FC games. Boult possibly but his form isn't the greatest.

de Boorder over Austin-Smellie definitely. But they might let Hopkins have a chance at home first before they drop him.

Brownlie anyone?

As I just said in our domestic thread before I read this, Bates simply has to be in the Paksitan T20 squad, as he was the best domestic bowler last season, and he's been the most impressive bowler in the T20s this season. (Along with Milne)

It would be stupid to pick one of the other pace bowlers mentioned above ahead of him.

In terms of batting there's not too many options open, Ryder, McCullum, Guptill, Taylor, Styirs, Frankin seems a pretty good T20 top six. The only option is if McCullum's not fit, then you'd have to bring in McGlashan.

I'd still keep McCullum as out second limited over spinner, but we're still searching for our second test spinner, I'd just bring in Bhupinder Singh for the sake of it. :lol

Ryder
Nicol
Guptill
Taylor
Styris
Franklin
McGlashan
McCullum
Southee
Bates
Sherlock/Milne?

Vettori ahead of Sherlock/Milne?
Or isn't he playing this series?

I don't think Vettori is playing

oh I can't find anywhere that says that. Then yes, Vettori in, but maybe instead of McCullum

Wtf Brownlie, Milne and Woodcock made the squad??

Brownlie deserves a go imo. Was the best batsman in the Emerging Players tournament and his domestic record is none too shabby either.

Embarrassingly enough I know nothing about Woodcock at all. His cricinfo page says he's a keeper but I find that hard to believe, considering his batting stats are pretty poor and his bowling ones are alright. Maybe someone can tell me what he's been doing so well recently?

----------

No Hopkins either. Didn't take his chances so fair enough.

tbh I have no idea how Woodcock has been selected, he did well in the Plunket Shield last year, but doesn't have any current form. His bowling has been ok but he hasn't done a lot with the bat. I would have much preferred Hira or Beard. Also can't believe that Bates didn't get a go. Milnes a great prospect but too raw atm, Bates is in great form and was MVP last year.

Btw Woodcock is a batter that bowls some left arm spin, dont know why cricinfo thinks hes a wicketkeeper...

Jeez, you must be getting close to bottom of the barrel stuff when you select Luke Woodcock for a national team. He's a decent player but he shouldn't be anywhere near the New Zealand team. Would of gone for Nick Beard myself whose carrer economy is .6 lower then Woodcock's.

Adam Milne well, we all knew he was going to get a run. I don't mind the selection because it's only 20/20 but I fear a couple of good performances will lead to a ODI debut (which would also be his List A debut :noway) and a couple of good performances in the ODI games would lead to a Test debut. He's rapid but doesn't do a hell of a lot with the ball at this stage of his career, I'd much rather he keep playing domestic cricket for another 2-3 years tbh, there is no point in trying to rush quick bowlers into international cricket, it very rarely works.

Yeah I don't mind the Brownlie selection, he's got a good technique from what I've seen of him, although I don't think the slow and low wickets in the SC will be the best plus to send him after a couple of 20/20 and perhaps ODI games.

I have no problem with the selections, Milne in T20's is worth a gamble it's only 4 overs of bowling the games aren't overly important unless they are WC games so really why not.

I'm not much of a fan of throwing him out there beyond that at the very least for another year or two, however because he is in the 30 man squad, I will not be surprised if he get's a go in the last 2 ODI's, performance during the domestic one dayers permitting of course.

I can't help but think they've missed a trick not selecting Bates for the T20s, England got it right in the T20 WC selecting quite a few specialist T20 players which hence lead to them winning it, but by the seems of things we're still looking to develop players for all three formats of the game.

I'm not really going to complain as the only two players from Auckland are Guptill and Mills, so we really should go on to win the HRV Cup with a bowling attack of Adams, Bates, Hira, Tuffey, and Martin, considering we're currently six points clear at the top.
