The England squad is back to full strength, which includes Michael Atherton; despite his absence from the last three Test matches, he is understood to be a certainty for the Edgbaston Test match. However, he has also announced that this will be his last Test series: his ongoing struggle with ankylosing spondylosis will bring his Test career to an end at the age of only 33, and will undoubtedly leave a big hole in the England dressing room. Darren Gough receives a recall to the England squad on the back of some excellent one-day international performances in the recent NatWest Series.
England have of course famously held the Ashes for over a decade now, but the first 21st Century Ashes series has every potential for that to change. For his part, Nick Knight will be hoping not to be England's first losing Ashes captain since David Gower.

England win the toss and choose to bat

It's the biggest event on the Test cricket calendar: Day One of the Ashes series. Australia look terrifyingly strong - they have selected their usual bombastic batting and four-man bowling attack, and will be an enormous challenge for the England team. On their part, they have stuck with the five-bowler strategy - Hoggard and Caddick both keep their places after the second Pakistan Test, while Michael Atherton comes back into the side to commence his last-ever Ashes campaign. With two top teams at full strength, the toss could be crucial. Nick Knight called correctly and England chose to bat first.
The England captain was coming off the back of a fallow series in May, but he put it behind him to immediately set the tone for this series with a string of boundaries. He contributed the lion's share of an 82-run opening stand that was only broken when Marcus Trescothick edged a Shane Warne slider to Mark Waugh at slip. The blonde leggie made it two in his next over by turning one past Stewart's outside edge, but the experienced Atherton was exactly the right person to stop the rot. The former opener knows exactly how to see out a difficult period, and did so to great effect by recording his 45th 50+ score in Tests before falling to a loose shot against the part-time off-spin of Waugh. By this point, Knight had gone on to his 12th century; a fantastic platform for new batter Thorpe to capitalise on. The Surrey left-hander was completely unfazed by the wickets that tumbled while he was at the non-striker's end, and his unbeaten 129 was instrumental in England posting a first innings total of over 400.
There have been suggestions in Wisden and elsewhere that this Australian team doesn't feel scoreboard pressure. However, their efforts against the English fast bowlers would suggest otherwise: first, Matthew Hayden snicked off against Mullally's left-arm nippers, then first-change bowler Caddick claimed the wickets of both Slater and Ponting in his opening over. Craig White also got in on the act by finding the edge of Mark Waugh's bat, and suddenly the tourists were four for nowhere near enough runs. Caddick then added Damien Martyn to his list of victims, and everything hinged on the Australian captain and keeper: Waugh and Gilchrist. It was at this point that Nick Knight introduced Phil Tufnell to the attack. England's great spinner struggled to find wickets, but the pressure he built created one for White: the bustling all-rounder pinning Adam Gilchrist in front of middle stump with a ball that swung just enough. When he also claimed the wicket of Waugh, the follow-on looked like a fait-accompli, but there was an issue: White needed a rest. By the time he returned to the bowling crease to take Australia's last wicket (as he so often does), Brett Lee had blasted a freewheeling second-ever Test 50 to get Australia just past the follow-on point.
The Austalian bowling unit was still highly motivated to push for the win, and early inroads from both Lee and McGrath made that look a genuine possibility: at 30 for four, England were absolutely tottering. It took the experienced Atherton and the combative White to pull things around as they laboured over an attritional century partnership. Atherton was first to fall, clean bowled by Shane Warne for 66, before Craig White followed some time later - caught behind for 75 off Brett Lee. The creative Paul Nixon saw the lead up to 400, at which point Knight signalled for the declaration: his bowlers would have just over four sessions to dismiss the Australians.
So imagine Nick Knight's frustration when Slater and Hayden made it to the end of the day's play without losing a wicket. All of a sudden, one listless passage of play had left England with only one day to play with. It would ultimately take some big spin to dismiss each Australian opener: both fell to Tufnell. This created a chink in the Australian armour for the English seamers to attack, and attack they did: first Caddick, then Mullally, then Hoggard produced breakthroughs. Then, just before the tea break, Hoggard again: the Yorkshireman claimed the enormous wicket of Mark Waugh. This meant Damien Martyn had to see out the last session with the bowlers for support, and he so nearly got there. With just 26 balls of play left, Craig White found his outside edge and Australia were nine down.
25 balls left for Glenn McGrath and Jason Gillespie to see out. Off the 7th of those, Gillespie scampered a single from the last ball of Tufnell's over to keep the strike. Off the 10th, he played and missed, but survived. Off the 15th ball, McGrath played a big slog-sweep out of the rough. No-one knew why he did that, but four more runs were added to Tufnell's figures. Off the 17th ball, McGrath ran a single. Off the 19th, Gillespie didn't, leaving Glenn McGrath to face the final over.
Craig White pounded in, and bowled outside the off stump. Left alone, no run. He ran in again, full and straight; McGrath squeezes it along the floor to leg-slip. The third ball, he edges behind. Nixon takes the catch. England win the first Test of the Ashes, in the very last over! What a sport. What a Test match for Craig White.

After the absolute nailbiter at Edgbaston, both teams arrived at Lord's with unchanged playing XIs. Both captains spoke confidently before the toss, with Knight promising "more of the same" and Waugh promising to "hit our straps and bring the Ashes home to Australia". We will find out which of them is right over the next month or so. For now though, we know that Steve Waugh has won the toss and decided that Australia will bowl first.
And bowl they did. Glenn McGrath and Brett Lee are certainly a contrasting new ball pair, but it seems that they also complement each other very well indeed. Marcus Trescothick lasted only three balls before Lee took his wicket, and he'd not even reappeared on the balcony by the time his captain was out too: caught at gully off the bowling of McGrath. Michael Atherton scratched around for nearly an hour, but he too couldn't get going - he became Shane Warne's first wicket. Amongst all of this chaos though, Alec Stewart looked to be in his best touch of the season so far. After giving an early chance to Hayden at slip, he knuckled down and started to get the scoreboard moving. He was particularly clinical against any short-pitched bowling. He eventually breezed his way to 81 before a slower leg-break from Warne finally dragged him out of the crease and he was stumped. A frenzied 35-run cameo from Paul Nixon saw England past 200, but they were still all out before the close of play.
Matthew Hoggard salvaged a silver lining for England by dismissing Slater before the close of the first day's play. Perhaps this would just be a low-scoring game. Orrrrrr... perhaps not. Hayden and Ponting started the second day with a masterful partnership of 133 before a period of brilliance from Phil Tufnell sent both of them back to the pavilion in the period of a few minutes. His and England's reward was to bowl at the Waugh brothers. Then, once they'd broken that partnership, Damien Martyn came to the crease. The Western Australian, playing his 13th Test match, rode his luck through the early period before flaying his way to a glorious maiden Test century. The MCC members stood and applauded him, and deservedly so as he shepherded the tailenders so well that Australia posted a total of over 400 despite what appeared to be difficult batting conditions.
However, the conditions weren't just bad for batting in but bad for cricket in general. Just as things looked really dicey for England - both Knight (for a diamond duck) and Trescothick had been dismissed cheaply when it started to rain. Stewart and Atherton batted through the drizzle for some time, but it soon became too heavy and umpires Holder and Bucknor had to take the players from the field.
They didn't get back out there for two full days. Once they did, England needed only to survive for about 90 minutes of play before the captains shook hand and finished the game with a draw.

Yet again, Australia arrived at a Test venue with an unchanged playing XI. England, however, did make a change: Darren Gough came in to play his first Test in a little over 12 months as England decided to look for a little bit of extra pace in their bowling attack. He came in for Matthew Hoggard, who hasn't quite found his rhythm against the Australian batters. This is Gough's 30th Test cap, and he keeps coming back into the side on sheer potential despite limited returns. Waugh clearly fancies his team's chances, as he chose to bat first after correctly calling heads.
One of Gough's ongoing problems in Test cricket has been his difficulty in stopping the flow of runs, and on the evidence of this spell that remains a problem. Trent Bridge can be a real graveyard for bowlers, and so it proved in the first couple of sessions. Both Gough and Caddick leaked boundaries, and responsibility fell to Tufnell to pull the handbrake on the scoring. Several Australian batters got to about 20, but only Hayden and Ponting managed to push on past 30. One imagines that both would have been very disappointed see Australia bowled out for 320 early on the second day's play. Tufnell and White shared seven wickets between them, White taking the last three wickets to fall as he so often does.
From very early in his innings, it was clear that Marcus Trescothick meant business. He particularly punished bowlers who were foolish enough to attack his stumps, crunching them away for countless runs through the leg side. What he really needed though was someone to bat with him, and nobody did for very long. Knight made 22; Stewart fell for a duck; Atherton got 33; Thorpe 18; White 13; Nixon 24; Caddick 1, and Gough 3. It really wasn't the best support in the world, even as Trescothick continued to play a serenely unbothered hand. At 248 for eight, England were staring down the barrel of a solid first innings deficit. But then something remarkable happened. Alan Mullally scored 40. His wagon wheel is amazing:
His innings consisted almost entirely of swings through the leg side and edges through the slip cordon. But his runs, and the support he managed to give to Trescothick, were invaluable. Against all the odds, England eked out a tiny three-run lead, and Trescothick managed to carry his bat.
But then Ricky Ponting went and put him completely in the shade. The 26-year-old tucked into the English bowlers to flay a remarkable 28 boundaries en route to a sparkling 194. He did get some excellent support from Martyn, but for the most part he absolutely did it himself. Despite what may prove to be his magnum opus as a batter, he was still livid to edge Caddick into the slips; he wanted 200 or more. Off the back of his innings, Australia were able to get themselves a lead in the 380s before Steve Waugh called his men in to declare. Would England go for the win? The defining characteristic of Knight's captaincy so far has been his unwillingness to settle for the draw.
Nope.
A quick look at the bowling figures is enough to see what went wrong: Brett Lee bowled nine overs, four for 35. Glenn McGrath bowled ten overs, two for 15. Jason Gillespie bowled 3.5 overs, and took four wickets for just two runs. If not for a single over of Darren Gough slogging Shane Warne's leg-spinners, England would have been all out for 60. Instead, they were all out for 72. It's not much better is it?

With the series in the balance, there were changes on both sides of the contest when the teams arrived in Headingley. For England, Gough was back out of the team, perhaps for the last time, and Hoggard returned; Alec Stewart was also left out after a prolonged period of indifferent form with Vikram Solanki preferred in his place. For Australia, Steve Waugh could barely hobble up the stairs into the pavilion, but he still had to be physically restrained from going out and taking the toss. Adam Gilchrist captains his country for the second time in Waugh's stead, with Simon Katich coming in as the replacement batter. English fans were gutted to learn that Gilchrist is just as strong of a tosser as Waugh, and that the visitors would bat first again.
Although intermittent rain created far more than the usual two interruptions in Day One's play, the English bowlers were unable to use this to their advantage. Instead, Michael Slater knuckled down and found strong support from the in-form Ponting as the pair of them ensured that Matthew Hayden's wicket was the only one to fall on the first day. The bad weather continued into the second day too, meaning that by the time England had claimed ten wickets, the third day's play had started. Six of those wickets fell to the probing Andy Caddick, and one of them - Simon Katich, who made a fine 93 on debut - fell to the part-time off-spin of Vikram Solanki. He and Shane Warne (59) shared in the partnership that turned England from contenders into also-rans in this Test match.
One thing that stood in England's favour was that the conditions underfoot were undeniably still good for batting. But at Headingley, we never look down; the answers to who'll be on top can always be found in the sky. Sure enough, thick cloud stretched as far as the eye could see. Brett Lee, Jason Gillespie and Shane Warne grabbed three wickets each as England toppled from 46 for none to 155 all out. The only positive was that this was more than double what they made last time they batted, so they did at least clear that very low bar.
Also potentially useful was the fact that they had batted for 70 overs; although painful for the amassed spectators, this did mean that Gilchrist chose to give his bowlers a rest as opposed to enforcing the follow-on straight away. This gave the English bowlers an opportunity to reclaim a little bit of dignity - an opportunity taken only by Alan Mullally, whose high-effort four for 53 stood out like a sore thumb amongst the dross. He was the only bowler to concede less than four runs per over. And who should top-score for the Australians but the debutant Katich again.
With England set a notional 602 runs to win, the real question would be whether they could see out the remaining 130 overs of scheduled play. Brett Lee had clearly set his mind on the fact that they would not: in fiery spells either side of tea on Day Four, he claimed the first three wickets to fall while conceding only five runs from his first nine overs. It was hopeless. As the English batting crumbled yet again, it fell to a few lusty blows from Andy Caddick to see the hosts past the 100 mark before becoming the 10th and final wicket to fall. Brett Lee was outstanding: he took six wickets for 29, his career best international bowling figures.
What a terrible few days to be an English cricket fan.

With The Ashes on their way back to Australia, the English selectors panicked. That's the only way to describe what must have happened in the selection meeting before the fifth Test. It would almost be quicker to run through the players who kept their places in the team, but that really wouldn't give you much of a clue about the new and returning players. First of all, Graeme Hick has been summoned from outside the squad to try to rescue things for England. He has been averaging 60 for Worcestershire so maybe that can work. Alec Stewart returns to the side to play his 100th Test match batting in the unfamiliar number six position, with Craig White shuffling down to number seven. Ben Hollioake will be at number eight, evidently playing as a bowler despite a shocking season in that discipline. Chris Read replaces Paul Nixon, batting all the way down at number nine. Then to finish it off, Caddick and Mullally are the only two main bowlers left from the many who've tried this series. It's been carnage. For the Australians meanwhile, Justin Langer has been brought in to be a steadier hand than Michael Slater, while Steve Waugh will be batting on one leg at number five. Poor Simon Katich has been shuffled back out of the team.
Nick Knight won the toss for the first time in a while and tried to show confidence in his batters by choosing them to have first crack at the game. He then also tried to set the tone himself, stroking a pleasant 30 before edging to a perfect length ball from McGrath. And frankly, that is where the rot started. Michael Atherton nicked off for one in his penultimate Test innings, then Trescothick fell victim to pure pace. Craig White and Chris Read, of all people, put together the highest partnership of the innings - for the eighth wicket. Thanks to yet another high-pace spell from Brett Lee, England were dismissed for under 200 runs, in under five hours. Again.
The bowling attack, depleted to just four main members, completely ran out of steam. Only Alan Mullally could offer any sort of incisiveness, but his workload of playing all seven Tests this summer was really beginning to show. More and more boundary balls were delivered, and almost every Australian batter put him, and the other English bowlers, to the sword. Langer made 89, Mark Waugh made 93, Ricky Ponting made 131 but the man who got all the attention was Steve Waugh, who declared on exactly 100 not out, still sprawled in the dirt having hobble-sprinted the single to bring up his landmark.
With more than half the game still to go, there was no point in trying to hold out for the draw. England had to just bat. The results were undeniably better than anything else they had tried for a while: Knight (54) and Trescothick (60) made a century stand, then Graeme Hick (41 off 30) offered a glimpse of what we've been missing. Graham Thorpe (57) also played well, as did Craig White (33) and Ben Hollioake (37 not out). Most emotionally of all, Michael Atherton (44) fell just short of one last Test half-century in what is his final game as a professional cricketer. This brings to an end a very distinguished career indeed, though he will certainly wish it had ended in better circumstances.
At least Atherton and the rest were a part of forcing Australia to bat again. It was a target of only 46 so it was never going to take long, but at least it wasn't an innings defeat. It was, however, an Ashes defeat as Nick Knight became the first England captain to lose the Ashes since Gower back in 1989. It remains to be seen if he will keep the captaincy, but this does feel like a watershed moment for the team in general.

Craig White wins the Barrington Medal in an admittedly drab and low-key manner; his performances may have tailed off, but so did the rest of the England team so nobody was able to catch up.
We also bid farewell to Test stalwart Michael Atherton. The former England opening batter and occasional leg-spinner leaves behind a legacy to be proud of as he moves into the cricketing media.

It's funny, I think that we've all of a sudden reached the point where this career's real-life equivalent started off.
A whole bunch of senior players are either done or about to be done - Atherton, Stewart, Hick and Tufnell being the obvious ones. We've just been roundly humiliated by Australia on our own doorstep, and even our best players (Knight, Stewart, White, Mullally, Tufnell) have had absolutely stinking Ashes summers. The balance of the side is shot and we've just ended the series by throwing everything at the wall only for it to land at the bottom of said wall in a pile of slop. The replacement players have all had a bit of a go, but none of them has stamped their authority on a place in the side.
It's suboptimal.
I completely agree. It's often hard to watch when that happens because you just know they have no clue.

After Ashes humiliation, England are desperate to turn things around in the space of four weeks in India. Fully expecting to be faced with turning pitches from day one, the ECB has chosen no fewer than five spinners in their 18-man touring squad. These spinners include England regulars Phil Tufnell and Graeme Swann, everyone's favourite leg-spinner Iain Salisbury, and the unproven qualities of Ian Blackwell and Richard Dawson. It seems very unlikely that they'll all get to play at once, but it's good to see fresh faces in a squad that had threatened to grow stale.
Elsewhere in the squad, Atherton's retirement paves the way for Nasser Hussain to be recalled to the England team; he was preferred to Graeme Hick despite the latter's appearance in the final Test of The Ashes. Vikram Solanki may feel hard done by to miss out, but a shocking season for Worcestershire and England really forced the selectors' hands. Paul Nixon and Ben Hollioake also stay at home; Nixon has lost his place in the squad to Essex phenom James Foster, while Hollioake is understood still to be in line for selection in New Zealand - just not for Indian dustbowls.
