Random Thoughts

Criticism of the US is always welcome and will always occur. No matter who is the global hegemone is he will be painted as the bad guy and it is in his interest to maintain that hegemony. Be it the Romans, Greeks, British Empire or the Americans.

While there are many legitimate criticisms of the USA, majority of anti-American sentiment is rooted in misinformation and is used a scapegoat for other peoples problems.

I personally feel that America is an overall positive influence in this world, for every negative example people give there are 100s of examples of good America does in the world. There is no point in listing out one single event since people will just play Devils advocate to that one cause and my point will be lost.

That is all I have to say on this issue.

I'm completely in jest, always will be about the States, it's a country I want to live in at some point.

I think there are more obvious and worthy criticisms out there, 'Nam being one, Iraq is another. I think the issue people have is how America and indeed Americans work. It's a very different country to any other out there.

They were showing diagrams on the TV about how our give way rules will change in 2012. The "Current" and "2012" diagrams were the opposite of how I already drive :o

I guess I wont need to change my giving way. To be fair to myself I've never ever seen someone turning into the minor Street of a T intersection give way, most people already think it's the other way around. If there changing it to "My way" then I guess I've only been using my common sense :p

I suppose that's why they're changing them, to stop the confusion that's already there.

Like I said it's a matter of interpretation versus original intent. Unfortunately the hagiography of the framers often obscures debate over it.

I think it was intentional, there is a certain vagueness in the text and it leaves room for leeway. This flexibility is what has allowed the document to be used for over 2 centuries with limited change.

Its a successful formula, maybe not for the world but for the American psyche it is.

The framers were opposed to a constantly standing army, it brought back fears of oppression or uprisings. Thus small state (colony) regulated militias with civilians was the conclusion.

Seeing as the Supreme Court has the power of Judicial Review (interpretation of the Constitution) Mark is right on this one. Doesn't matter what we think.

Although originally intended for militias, having Guns seems to be woven into the rights of many people here in America. But as a left wing loon, I will never understand why I would prefer a shot gun to good ole ADT ;).

I think the topic has gotten a bit too serious for random thoughts :p
Changing tracks, weather here in Vancouver is absolutely lovely after 3 days continuous gloomy drizzle.
The sun is out and the temperature is hovering around 16 degrees.
Not bad is what I say :)

:laugh Surely you've been giving way to the people turning right at a t intersection though? Like you're turning left into the stem and there is someone facing towards you turning right into the stem, you give way to them? Most people still follow that one. The reason that one is being changed is because we're the only country in the world that does it.

But yes your point about turning into the minor street of a T intersection is correct - 19 of 20 people don't know about that rule. I do (:p) but no one ever does it and that is the reason why they are changing it.

Was watching this on the news :)

I'd prefer the news to be covering changes to our laws rather than someone running around Auckland uni with a gun :sarcasm
