Who's the better bowler? Shoiab Aktar or Brett Lee?

I think Akthar.

Lee. Akhtar's not played cricket for a decent spell for a long time, and he's a twat. So Lee every time, hope he gets back to full fitness in time for the Ashes. I can't wait to see Lee vs Pietersen once again, was an awesome contest in 2005, Lee won the battle but KP won the war. Lee was all over him at the start of the series but then just at the right time KP worked out how to dominate him. Lee's a great competitor, one of the few Aussies I actually like.

And what about the return series? :D

Anyway, their career figures suggest that Akthar was miles better than Lee in test matches, though I'd go for Lee in ODIs.

What about the return series? Pietersen made a hundred and 3 fifties in that series, averaging 54, so Lee didn't really dominate him in that series, and only got him out twice in the whole series. Not exactly what your point was there =/

The career figures may suggest that, but one thing you're failing to consider is the fact that Akhtar's an idiot. One of the most talented fast bowlers of the modern era, with a deadly yorker and extreme pace, but he's also been blessed with an extremely idiotic personality. Caught taking Nandrolone and then copping a 5 year ban from the PCB for being a general twat, as well as his reputation when he had a spell at Worcestershire (I think), where afterwards someone high up in the club said he was the worst aquisition they could have got. He turned up when he wanted to, barely trained with the rest of the team and then didn't even play that well. The man is a moron, and for that reason alone I'd pick Lee.

You are going by what he did in the last 3 years and ignoring completely what he did before that.

A fit Akthar is better than a fit Lee any day. And their personalities need not be brought into the discussion.

Also, in the Ashes 2006-07, the battle was won, but the war lost spectacularly.

Akhtar at his best was/is better than Lee. As his test averages of 26 compared to Lee's average 0f 31 proves.

I would of chosen Akhtar if he wasn't a drug cheat, so therefore Lee is the best...

So when comparing Dhoni and Pietersen you have to take everything they offer to the team into consideration, but here we're only allowed to compare them as bowlers? Make your mind up. Lee offers far more to a team, he's a fantastic bowler when at full fitness, he also offers decent batting, is a very good fielder and he's not a complete twat. Lee fights for his country, that was proven at Edgbaston in 2005 where he was hit on the body 4 or 5 times and still battled on, only to have his efforts wasted with Kasprowicz pushing the ball round the corner into the gloves of Jones.

Akhtar may be the better bowler, I'm not denying that. But if I was to pick a player for my XI it'd be Lee every time.

Please Dan, re-read the thread first post.

I asked clearly "Who is the better bowler"

And in the Dhoni-KP thread, I asked "Who is the better player".

:D Warne then might not be in your top list I guess.

Akthar is brilliant on song. Pace, swing, reverse swing, superb slower ball. His action meant he could bowl a bouncer with literally no change in action, he could just slip one in. He couldn't be read...

Akhtar had loads of talent, but he left Pakistan high and dry way too many times, whether it was his fitness, his commitment or just his indiscretions. In the span of his career, Pakistan have played more than twice as many matches as he has. He's lucky to have a substantial career, because a lot of other boards would not have put up with him for this long.

It's hard to say who the better cricketer is, because they're valuable in such different ways. Australia in recent times have had depth in quality bowlers, so a bowler like Akhtar who could do anything on his day would be far more valuable than a bowler like Lee, who is on par at best with other bowlers outside the team, but a consistent contributor. Bangladesh, however, would've preferred Lee. They need someone who is going to bowl pretty well every week, and put in solid efforts with the bat in the tail. (although I suspect he would've been a little further up the order with them) I suspect the stronger teams would rather Akhtar, because of how amazing he is on his day, but a weak team would get much more value out of Lee, a serviceable bowler who could bowl a lot of overs consistently without having a sook.

Excellent post mate.

so you chose lee cos you think akhtar is an idiot?
that says it all about your posts

Yes I did. Akhtar's an utter twat, and if I was picking an XI I'd want a player that's going to put in all his effort and actually play for the team, not for himself. I don't agree with players that use performance enhancing drugs either, so Akhtar would never get in my team, same with the other Pakistani buffoon Mohammed Asif. Both great bowlers, but both equal in terms of stupidity.
