Rugby Union

Can't believe Chev Walker has left the Leeds Rhinos for Bath. I'm not a Union fan I love Rugby League to the core and it's a loss for the Rhinos. Chev is really talented :)

Haha, big mistake! :o
I don't know much about NZ rugby, but I did actually know that! :)
And no, he's not the world's best fly-half, Wilkinson is :p
Good to see Catt there- he's a very versatile player who can fill a variety of roles in the backline- and with his experience, should be looking to adopt a senior role in this England side.
Err, excuse my ignorance, but did you say Seven weren't covering it? What the heck, how am I supposed to see it now?
I had optus for a while last year, and the Ashes was on Fox Sports 2 if I remember correctly; there's an unfair allocation for you! ;)
EDIT: Just saw an advert- seven are broadcasting it- I must've read your post incorrectly...

Oh they are showing it. All I know is Foxsports is showing it live too. I think there one has no ads.

Catt, I got one name for him - Lomu ;) Wilkinson is too injury prone and hes got nothing on Carter. But don't you English worry us Aussies will bring up a player even better than Carter. :)

Yea I read about that. I saw him in the RL tri nations last year not bad player at all. Good old union stealing more players :p

Wallabies have named their team. Elsom at 8 is a bit of a surpise as I thought they were going with Smith there. But no biggie as it's just a number. Front row pretty much as expected, can't wait to see how they go.

AUSTRALIA: Chris Latham; Mark Gerrard, Stirling Mortlock, Mat Rogers, Lote Tuqiri; Stephen Larkham, George Gregan (captain); Rocky Elsom, George Smith, Daniel Heenan; Nathan Sharpe, Dan Vickerman; Rodney Blake, Tai McIsaac, Greg Holmes. Replacements: Jeremy Paul, Al Baxter, Mark Chisholm, Phil Waugh, Josh Valentine, Clyde Rathbone, Cameron Shepherd.

That looks to be a very formidable backline; every member has pace, including the bench. Good to see Shepherd there, as he's a real talent, and Rathbone is a versatile option in the centres or, if needed, on the wings. It'll be interesting to see how the forward pack fares against a determined English side, and although it's undergone changes since that clash with England where the scrums were an absolute atrocity, a particular point of interest will be those very contests. Latham's a fairly reliable fullback with a decent kicking game, and it's great to see Larkham back in the side- I hope for his sake that this return wasn't too rushed. If he clicks, he'll pose a major threat with the quality balls he feeds both the backs and forwards, and the opportunities he creates both wide and centrally. Anyway, no massive surprises in that line-up. Looking forward to it! :)

Speaking of kicking options, all our backs can kick! Gerrard is more than capable, Mortlock pulled off some good kicks for the Brumbies, Rogers dam long punter of the ball, Tuqiri handy enough the weakest of the lot, Larkham well you know, and Gregan can do a bit of box kicking if needed. So quite a lot of kicking options. Also can't wait to see how Rogers goes in his new position at inside center.

Didn't Rogers kick a 60-metre, or something like that, drop-out for the Sharks one year? That just tells us how he can be relied upon in the punting department. With kicking options, every one of the backs can not only just kick, but have unique charecteristics associated with that part of their game. Gregan, as you said, can effectively chip and execute thoughtful kicks from different angles around the outskirts of the ruck, Larkham is obviously a creative kicker with great vision and accuracy, Rogers has distance, Tuqiri is useful and can implement it well in his individual plans, etc...

Good first International test. Ireland played really well, I expect a thrashing. Great defence from Ireland especially from Darcy and BOD, geez BOD was great tonight in defence and attacking. All Blacks prevailed in the end, McLister grew as the match went on and Flavell made a good comeback scoring a try.

I saw the highlights on Sportsworld this morning- the early try proved to be vital in the outcome, yet also gave the Irish an immediate wake-up call. A very good fight posted by Ireland, as they maintained the lead until the very end, but this All-Blacks side, despite not being at full strength, is terrifyingly good as a unit.
Will be interesting to see how the new look pack fares tonight under a forward orientated coach, but the backline will also have to perform to the level expected of them. Gonna go watch it now! :D

Flavell was awesome. NZ has way too many good back rowers :)

Amusing yet ugly start. Scrums are nightmares, England are playing horribly, game isn't flowing and yet its still 9-0...

Should be 9-3 but that England guy practically missed from in front! and they wasted 2 great chances!

Australia lead 9-0 at half-time; I must say, it's been a pretty sloppy display from both sides. Plenty of judgement errors with the wrong options being taken, and despite the ball being quite slippery, some poor handling. England have had a few golden scoring opportunities- the disallowed one was a good call by the upstairs assistant, and even though it was a well executed kick from the English fly-half, I can't see why he didn't just pass to his left as it would've drawn out the Australian defender. The cut-out pass was a poor choice, suggesting the fact that he wasn't aware of his other teammate on his near right. The scrums aren't a nightmare, but they aren't great either, with the ref cracking down on every fault to add to that. Still, there's been some good passing and very well constructed play amidst the errors, and the start of the second half will be crucial for both nations.
England should've taken the run instead of the shot for goal, by the way; quite a negative move, although you could see the thinking behind it. Nevertheless, that was a terrible kick.

EDIT: Well, it was a match of the gradual mounting of pressure on the English side. Australia built into their game with very solid defence, thereby negating England's pace, and then attacked well towards the end with some decent tries and plays. Not a great match, but not bad either. A deserved, and expected, Australian victory, with the forwards performing okay- I thought Elson played quite well at number eight, too.
Final score: 34-3
