Rugby World Cup 2011

Scotland were the better side, looked more likely to score and dominated territory. Just couldn't cash in on the try in particular while Argentina pulled the rabbit out of the hat.

Scotland looked more likely to score goals is about it. Don't feel they deserved to win it the way they played.

2nd half they went into the kicking game but 1st half they kept ball in hand and were getting over the advantage line quite easily, they have some good opportunities to score a try just handling or a turn over came at the wrong time.

Yeah I thought they'd be able to crack them in the second if they kept the pressure on, but was disappointed when they decided to just kick.

Someone asked before what happens if two teams finish on the same number of points. If that happens it comes down to who won the match between them first, then for and against.

Currently pool B is:

England - 14
Argentina - 10
Scotland - 10

So assuming Argentina get five points against Georgia they'll go to 15 points, then if Scotland beat England by more than seven points England will get knocked out.

Yes it's unlikely, but we're already seems the likes of Ireland knock over Australia after Ireland struggled to get past the USA.

I thought it was done on points differential?

In Pool D of the '99 world cup, 3 teams finished on 4 points - Wales, Samoa and Argentina. They were ranked by for/against that time, but trying to rank them by who won against the other is impossible, so maybe that's why it was done on differential on that occasion.

I'm back to having no idea :facepalm

Found two from '87.
Pool C - Fiji, Italy and Argentina finished on 2 points, but again is impossible to rank by who won against the other, so went by differential.
Pool D - France and Scotland both on 5 points, they had a 20-20 draw, so went on differential.

The team which has the best difference between points scored for and points scored against in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has the best difference between tries scored for and tries scored against in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has scored most points in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
The team which has scored most tries in all its pool matches shall be the higher ranked;
Should the tie be unresolved at the conclusion of steps 1 through 5, the team that is higher ranked in the updated Official IRB World Rankings on October 3, 2011.

Lol, we all posted the same thing at pretty much the same time...

Lol I was on the world cup page too, dunno how I missed the tournament rules link :facepalm

I thought it should be whoever had won their match against the other too, so yeah, seems fair.

Aus can still get on top of Ireland if they lose to Italy though, as long as they don't get 2 bonus points in the process.

If I could pick one result this weekend, it would be this one for sure. England failing to make the quarters would be hilarious. Tough ask for the Scots to win though, let alone by 8 or more.

South Africa haven't looked too convincing, so I'm not worried about facing them in the quarters. Too bad the top 3 will end up on one side of the draw and we'll be stuck with another northern hemisphere team in the final though.

The Samoa - SA game last night was pretty good

story of our team for the last 5 or 6 years though. there is this dutch guy, Visser, in the celtic league that's broken try scoring records for edinburgh the last two years, he'll be qualified to play for us next year and god do we need someone like him. just hope he's not a damp squib at international level.

but anyway, MASSIVE game tomorrow.
