India has earned the no.1 spot only because of its consistent performance over the years . For those people who comment that india has not performed abroad , India has won against england , pakistan , newzealand etc in their own backward. Sanga mind u... U ppl have played hell a lot of matches in india and still you havent managed to win even one test.. India has managed to win a test in aus , SA , SL... I agree that we need a fair FTP. But indias no 1 position is justified since no other country has played better to earn that spot. SA lost to AUS and made a close shave against eng. Aus lost to SA n they r at the verge of losing against pak. India has not lost a series since 2007. Thats why they are no.1

if SL beat IND 2-0 or better they will be at No1 so if that happens SL is not Deserved to be No 1 Too.:D

Sanga on point like a laser beam. Even Harsha Bhogle was saying something similiar as well.

But as i've always said before. You dont need a ranking system in cricket since it can never be a fair guide. Some foolishness always occurs. You dont need a ranking system to tell you who is the best team in the test cricket. You certainly didn't need one to tell you Windies where the best from 76-91 & 63-68/69, AUS 95-2006/07 or England 1951-58. Any erudite cricket fan can make a sane judgement on who is the best team in the world.

There currently is clearly no clear or marginal # 1 test team in world cricket since AUS relinquished that satus immediately after the 2006/07 Ashes (But again the dumb ranking system didn't acknowledge this decline until 2009 :facepalm). Anyone defending India "so called # 1 status according to the flawed ranking system", is dellusional.

I think it will become harder and harder for any team in the future to win against every team in every country, the WI and Aus teams of the past must be looked at being quite supreme. No team at present is capable of beating everyone home and away, not by a mile. The closest would be SA in my book, like Aus they never go down easily.

Yea. But then again even SA missed two GREAT oppurtunities to win in India in the last 2 years. They had the perfect pace attack like AUS IN 04. But theit top 7 weren't as solid againts spin as AUS in 04 -which costed them.

If they had won anyone of those series - they certainly would have to be # 1.

I don`t want to get into the debate whether India deserve the #1 spot or not. However, we have been the only side to be even consistently winning test matches on away tours. Sri Lanka have`nt won a test in India, SA or Aus yet and still they are at the No.4 position, forget test series I`m talking of test matches. If SL have played many home tests and still have managed to only stay at the No.4 position, they surely have been doing something wrong.

Ind, SA, Aus have been at least winning test matches in each other`s countries on their last tours to each other. SL have`nt done that and that is why they are at No.4 and not because they have`nt had a fair chance. Pakistan had`nt beaten Aus for 15 years till yesterday and could`nt beat NZ in NZ (would`ve lost that series had it not been for the weather) and hence they are ranked below SL. Same with NZ. So what this shows is that the rankings work well to at least separate the top 3 from the rest, over a period of time.

Anyone who uses the ICC rankings as a major point in any argument is being silly. Instead, teams should try to win the PlanetCricket vote for Best Test Team of the Year.
