South Africa in Australia

Ponting could have made a more sporting declaration, but they needed that big total, after the shocking first innings, to restore morale. This match will go a long way to improving the gazillion matches these two teams will play in coming months.

And the Prince wicket... very much OUT.

Pitching in line or outside off? YES
Struck in line? YES
Going on to hit the stumps? YES

The umpiring standards were very good. The Prince wicket was tight but i would of given out first reaction but it may have just pitched outside off. The Kemp decision by Doctrove was fantastic and also the bat pad appeal for Rudolph off Warne which didn't clipp the gloves was also a fantastic decision considering the Aussies were all over Doctrove. Just the 1 or 2 bad decisions in the match that i can see. Fantastic knock by Rudolph though, hes got real potential with AB De Villers and showed a solid defensive technique. This will be a massive boost for the Saffas that they got away with this match. Expect Kallis to be back and the Boxing day test will be game on as the Saffas will be at full strength.

Looks like a Draw. Australia arn't playing at their best.

The umpiring has been great, Doctrove mad ethat mistake with the no-ball but the others hes made have been spot on.
australia have been fine, Most teams can really get a draw with Australia if they wanted to

I must say, South Africans have given something for Aus to think.
Now,Aus will come up with something new and strong for them in the next test match. Perth's story won't be repeated again. 1 test match is enough for Aus to wake up. :onpc

We always knew SA had the fighting spirit and with their lineup they are always going to be tough to bowl out twice.

Lee didn't do as much in the 2nd inns but McGrath wasn't even there this test, I think his pre game injury may have affected him.

Also Jaques has been selected to replace Langer for the 2nd test. Good to see him getting a go. Hopefully he cements his place and forces Langer to retire ;)

Any team that can stop Shane Warne and his friends are great!

Great stuff from SA.

I was thinking at the time of Australia's declaration that Ponting would cop alot of heat if South Africa were to successfully force a draw. I assume that will be a major focus in the papers today.

But in his defence, a) perhaps the ease with which Australia batted suggested to Ponting that the surface was still good enough for a 350ish total to be chased down (which I thought at the time) and b), if you can't knock a team over in 126 overs with conditions suiting your main striker, you don't deserve to win.

Ponting's declaration shouldn't be the focus, it should be on the brilliant performance from the South African batsmen and the lacklustre performance of the bowlers.

Great job by South Africa!

I'm finally happy that atleast SA have drawn it atlast. Most contribution to Rudolf and Kemp. Well SA should have atleast one spinner for the next test. As I see they don't have even one spinner.

What a great knock by the young man Rudolph and by my favorite Soth African palyer Justin Kemp!!! Great match!!!

Well this is about the first time I will have to agree with Ponting. :D It wasn't his fault that they lost. They had i think about 130 overs which was plenty of time. Aus didnt bowl to well and this match furthers my comments that the Aussies rely on Warne way too much and once he retires it will be a struggle. Saffas did well and have kept this series alive. Dissapointing and disgusting to hear about racial comments to the Saffas players while they were fielding. It may be a small proportion of the crowd but when i went to the Super Test match i heard spectators calling Murali a chucker and also using other racial words which i will not say and also to several other members of the crowd who were Indian and Sri Lankan descent. Guess the reason behind the racial comments from the crowd were because of the recent riots. Its always like this, when the Aussies struggle or lose, people start becoming restless and show bad behaviour but when they win (as usual) they behave atrociously and abuse opposition players.

Ponting isn't a good captain when the pressure is on, we saw that in the Ashes and here again now. The bowlers were managed extremly poorly. Apart from Warne the other 3 bowlers were doing NOTHING. SO why didn't Ponting go to osmeone else earlier? Bracken was average. McGrath looked a little rusty, Lee wasn't getting as much pace as usual.

He should of declared earlier really, but then again, I would of backed Australia to bowl SA out easy enough.

Ponting as i always said isn't a good captain and the hype that he can match Waugh or has continued the Waugh success isn't true. See when Aus played in India last year Gilchrist was the skipper and they were 2-0 up, then when ponting returned he lost the match despite it being a dead rubber. Ponting lacks imagination and relies on Warne way too much on test matches and Lee on ODI's. Other captains such as Fleming, Vaughan and even Inzi are alot better and certainly have strong tactical thinking.

Good job from the Proteas. However, if any team had a chance of drawing a match against the Aussies, it is the South Africans. Although their game has certainly evolved a bit in the past few months, they were always specialists at defensive cricket.
