Well, the only way he can miss the record is through some sort of judgement/execution error, 'cause the African attack, and indeed the whole outfit, in this current state really have very little hope of forcing a dismissal. Sending SA in for the better part of the latter session would be the best bet, I guess, as it's always hard to negotiate that tricky period, let alone do so successfully with basically no winning incentive or physical/mental energy- two days burning in the outfield with, effectively, one wicket (the first two being taken early on in quick succession) can't be an encouraging prospect.
Anyway, it's tea; for some reason I'm hoping Lara's record remains, but, if it doesn't, you can't say Jayawardene isn't a deserved holder.
I was under the impression that the FC partnership record was with the Waugh brothers (460 odd, if I recall correctly)- before this test's events, obviously-, clearly not...
