Impressive comeback from Sri Lanka although the pitch is more batting supportive. I see the pitch easing up by tomorrow so South Africa should really be looking to score 400+ runs bowling Sri Lanka for under 300.

Chandimal has looked good leaving that dropped catch. Samaraveera has been really rock solid and they did not want him in the team

Botha is good in shorter formats but I think they do need someone like Imran Tahir who look to take wickets. And they don't need anymore batting down the order after top 6 or 7 and as you said Philander can bat as well so why do you need anymore batting?

No I meant if Botha can do a decent job with the ball in tests and he can provide a bit with the bat and you have Philander who can bat as well, it can really strengthen the lower order of South Africa and provide the X-factor. Imran is already 32 and hasn't looked really that threatening so far in tests in South African conditions.

Imran has not looked successful because the conditions have been subdued for fast bowling. Green Pitches, overcast conditions perfect for fast bowling. This is his test of patience. If he can hang around the team with 1-2 wickets per innings he has done great job IMO.

There is a reason why Tahir has been in the top wicket takers in the domestic scene and botha has never been close.

Botha is a defensive ploy, might be an option as a second spinner in the subcontinet. He isn't close to Tahir as their fc records show.

Talking about tahir, he has been unlucky today. De lange dropped chadimal and boucher missed a clear stumping.

We have to remember he has had to bowl on seamer friendly green pitches for all his test career so far except maybe this test. Its way too soon to write him off.
