Steve Davies - "I am gay"

That's a bit of an assumption to make, considering every single person is different and for all you know there could be a bunch of teenagers who this story really does help.

I agree I'm being assumptive, but it's not an outrageous assumption, and there will be kids who will be inspired by this. But not many. Take Sir Ian Mckellen for example. He's a much bigger name than Davies, has been fighting for gay rights since the 80's, has atteneded God knows how many gay parades and rallies. To me, that is a lot more inspiring.

Gonna be honest when I actually saw the title on the BBC website my first thought was Broad :p then followed by Cook (mainly because those 2 are the "pretty boys" of the team who aren't married :p) A bit stereotypical of me :p

Cook has a girlfriend, it was mentioned in an article from the Wisden cricketer magazine.

This announcement might make batsmen a little wary of the gay keeper standing behind them checking out their backsides :p And I'm sure a bit of extra sledging will be shunted Davies way...

But more seriously, the best thing is the reaction of his teammates, it sounds like they've been really supportive. That's the main hurdle to the whole 'coming out' thing - acceptance by your peers.

I think the situation is totally different though. In sports, there are very few openly gay sportspeople, whereas in drama it's more common and less of a stigma. That's the way I see this anyway.

it can work both ways,

Davies can totally throw off the batsmen, especially the ones from conservatives cultures by saying "nice ass" or "see you in the showers"

it could work to his advantage

lol he's not dead, he's just gay. Of course we can make jokes

If thats the logic behind it then I'm going to start cracking racist jokes. They aren't dead after all...

Race is arbitrary and meaningless. If you accept Darwin's theory even in it's most fundamental form then race is nothing more than variety within a species. And a species itself is nothing more than spherey continuum. There is no such thing as a species, we just perceive organisms as species because we intersect them at a particular point in time. No such thing as a species makes variety within a distinct species even more insignificant.

so race is by no means a mark of identity, let alone something to base political or social implications off of.
