Kevin Pietersen failed to continue on to a century as he was trapped LBW by Glenn McGrath for 93.
Ian Bell did manage to make his hundred with support from Andrew Flintoff as England passed 400 and stamped their authority on the fourth Ashes test match.

Hayden passed fifty after the lunch break with Jaques, rekindling their good form in the previous test.
Monty Panesar trapped Jaques LBW for 35 to provide a crucial blow that could stop Australia making a remotely competitive score.
Hayden was 97 not out at the tea break.

Andrew Strauss scored 60 off 100 balls to help avoid a batting collapse
England began the fifth and final day of the fourth Ashes test match against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground on 20/1, 104 runs ahead with Andrew Strauss on 2 not out and Paul Collingwood on 17 not out.
Early on in the day, Matthew Hayden took an excellent catch to get out Paul Collingwood off the bowling of Glenn McGrath for 18 and make the score 21/2.
Kevin Pietersen had clearly been given a license to slog but it backfired when Justin Langer caught him out in the deep after an awful shot off the bowling of Jason Gillespie for just 1. England were then 34/3.
Andrew Strauss and Ian Bell played well to put on a respectable partnership of 89 before Strauss was out Leg Before Wicket off the bowling of Gillespie for a well made 60 off 100 balls. England were then 113/4.
Bell batted through until the lunch break with Andrew Flintoff to reach 31 not out, with Flintoff on 6 not out.
