South Africa Vs. Scotland
Match 5
South Africa: 1) G. Smith 2) j. Kallis 3) H. Gibbs 4) AB de Villiers 5) J. Duminy 6) A. Morkel 7) M. Boucher 8) R.V. der Merwe 9) J. Botha 10) M. Ntini 11) D. Steyn
Scotland: 1) G. Hamilton 2) N. Poonia 3) R. Watson 4) K. Coetzer 5) C. Smith 6) J. Stander 7) N. McCallum 8) R. Haq 9) G. Drummond 10) C. Macleod 11) G. Rogers
South Africa won the toss and elected to bat. Smith started the day with a boundary but his opening partner Kallis, wasn?t as lucky. He tried to cut his first ball, but couldn?t keep it down as Coetzer took a simple catch at gully. After 2 overs SA were at 13/1. The third over changed the context of the game. Gibbs smashed, cut and drove 5 fours and a six of MacLeod?s over. With Gibbs full of confidence he charged every bowler and no one was spared. Smith was also playing aggressively but compared to the way Gibbs, he was going along slowly. When the powerplay was over SA were a massive 72/1! After the PP the SA batsmen slowed down a bit, but still were going around 10. I was in the dugout, the best place to watch the innings, talking to Mickey Arthur when Drummond came fielding on the boundary, and I said to him, ?Why don?t you guys try a spinner?? Whether it was my saying or Hamilton finally got some sense, they brought in Haq. He beat Gibbs with flight and Gibbs (58 of 25) who was trying to cut, but the bowl was too close to him and he missed and the ball hit the wickets, SA 108/2 in 10 overs. I got some nasty stares from the SA bench and I thought it was best to leave. De Villiers arrived and tried to keep the tempo up, but replacing Gibbs wouldn?t be easy. Smith finally reached his 50 of 35 balls, and then went berserk. De Villiers supported him, and the pair put on a 92 run partnership. Smith was nearing his maiden T20 ton, when Watson bowled a slow Yorker and Smith hit it as long as Poonia?s hand at Long off. Smith couldnt believe it! He had played so well for his 95(of 57). The last over yielded three wickets as the South Africans went mad. De Villiers hit first ball to square leg?s hand. Morkel arrived and it one straight down the ground, it managed to clip Watson?s fingers and Duminy fell short at the non-strikers end. Morkel joined him next ball when he failed to read a slower one, but Boucher 6(2) ended SA innings on 204. For the bowlers, Watson(1-27 of 3), Rogers (2-28 of 3) Haq (1-41 of 4) were decent but MacLeod(1-47 of 4) and the others were very disappointing.
We couldn?t watch most of the 2nd Innings because we were preparing for our own game. The SA bowlers were getting good amount of movement, something that was worrying for us. Steyn was sensational, he ended the game with an unbelievable match figures of 3-8 in 3.4 overs. The SA spinners were brilliant too sharing 5 wickets between them. Kallis got 1 wicket (for 19 runs of 2 overs) Ntini (0-15 of 2 overs) and Morkel (0-18 of 3 overs) didn?t get wickets but looked very threatening too. The Scottish never seriously looked to threaten the South African score but credit must be given to Coetzer and Hamilton as they fought bravely but couldn?t save themselves of a drubbing.
