Tamil Music/Movie Thread

I am in Bentonville, Arkansas :) they showed in a city called 'Rogers(malco)' which is 5 mins from my place & showing in 'BellaVista(sugar creek center)' from Thursday till Sunday which is kind of 30ish minutes from my place.

Heard that they are trying to keep the foreign language movies for atleast a week, adding revenue to these theatres which is usually more for a day compared to normal English movies($10/ticket) at my place. Yes, mine is very small place though its headquarters for Walmart.

Oh wow.... I am actually very close by to you. I am currently living/working in Germantown, Tennessee (in Memphis).

Watched 'Jilla' yesterday. Well being a Vijay fan, was very disappointed with the film. It was a takeback to the dark days of Villu, Vettaikaran, Sura. The movie was basically a modified version of Dheena (stg. Ajith and Suresh Gopi) where Vijay plays Ajith's role and Mohanlal plays Suresh Gopi's role. The screenplay was such a drag, and even the first half which people said was good, was pretty shabby. Kajal Agarwal has a 'blink and you miss' role. Soori's comedy falls flat, Mohanlal plays a role that he doesn't deserve....

The first half had a few smiles and also the songs were plus points, but to me, the entire film was a major disappointment. More so seeing that both Mohanlal and Vijay were wasted big time (Vijay probably had a hand in it). I would give it a 2/5 for the songs and for some smiles.

Oh, wow! I have been to Memphis couple of times though it was just on the way stop while driving to Chicago. :)

This is exactly what I heard from my colleagues who went for this movie here. So it looks like, first half of Jilla was good while second half of Veeram was good. :) But yeah, disappointment & would be interested to see where it stands in that Sun Tv top 10 movie ratings. I remember seeing KSS standing @ 8th/9th spot for a long time, so would be interested to see whether these 2 will go to top 5 as biriyani/Endrendrum punnagi/Ivan vera mathiri have been consistently topping the list for few weeks now.

Sun TV top 10 ratings are majorly biased and illogical in terms of rating movies... People stopped following their Top 10 ratings when it used to rate movies based on the political affiliation that it had at one point of time.

I havent watched Veeram yet, but I feel its another mindless mass masala film. But I will watch it just for the festive season release hype.

Same Here :( disappointed very much by Jilla , Vijay had a great platform to move to next level by Thuppaki...but he wasting that image :( i hate these types of vijay movies now a days,Soori's comedy was so Horrible :mad Vijay's acting on most of the scenes looking like over acting, bad Screenplay & Direction ... Music was good..... here after Vijay should look for Good Stories & Directors ,even Siva & VJ Sethupathy itself looking for Good Stories & Directors, why vijay cant?

Finally watched "Endrendum Punnagai". The movie started off really well and was very funny and good for the first 15-20 mins. But after that, goes right downhill to the point where I was waiting for it to end. There was no depth at all in the romance between Jiiva and Trisha. Trisha looked amazingly beautiful throughout the film, and probably after Santhanam was the best part of the film. Jiiva was sleeping more than walking through his role. He looked dull and drab. Vinay was decent, though his screen time was less. Santhanam was the best part of the film and was geniunely funny.. But he also started taking it too far towards the end of the film. Songs were lovely and picturised well, but HJ's background score as usual never lifts up above mediocrity.

Overall: 2.5/5 (1 for Santhanam, 1 for Trisha and .5 for the rest)

Got time to catch up with "Veeram". The first half made me feel if the hype around the film was justified. But the way the 2nd half unfolded, OMG!!! It was like watching a hardcore Telugu film and coming out of it with lots of headache.... HORRIBLE!!!! Do they still make movies like this? I thought we were past that stage where the mindless Telugu style violent action films were past the trend.

Both Ajith and Vijay have given crap films this Pongal. The sad thing is, their fan bases have ensured both films are running well. If you are a true Ajith fan, you should be mighty disappointed with Veeram. For Ajith, this is a fresh film considering he has made stylish action films mostly. But for the audience (should say 'neutal audience' because fans will say they like it due to their ego), this is a headache.... Ajith looks old, and thereby looks grossly unfit to romance a heroine onscreen. And frankly, his 'salt and pepper' look suits city based characters. Even Santhanam makes fun of Ajith's grey hairs in the same film. George Clooney does not romance around the trees with his heroines or dances with them for songs wearing funny costumes.....

1/5

If the two films had been released on non-vacation days, they would have been utter flops. :)

Not sure about that, because the fans of both actors are so die hard and blind that they can't see anything past their fav actors. They just want to see the actors, and nothing else matters. I used to be part of one of these groups not too long back, but I am now past it and I see how stupid it is to be so blind.

I now understand why the films clashed. The clash also contributed to the hype for both films, and that's why both of them are running well. If they hadn't clashed, neither film would have done as well as they did.

I meant
Big starrer film + released on holiday = HIT

Sai, told ya not to expect too much ;) these would be always typical mass hero films without expectations. :)

Not yet got time to watch either of them but heard Veeram is scripted to show Ajith as a supreme human, its just a scene to show Ajith's screen presence. Is that true?

Heard the songs of "Ennamo Edho" (Music: D. Imman, Stg: Gautam Karthik) and "Ithu Kathirvelan Kadhal" (Music: Harris Jayaraj, Stg: Udhay Stalin, Nayanthara). Both albums are very good, more so "Ennamo Edho" which is excellent. Ithu Kathirvelan Kadhal is typical Harris fare, and if you are a Harris fan, you will love it to the core... Ennamo Edho will be liked by more people because its not a typical Imman album. It has more variety and more freshness. P.s: Anyways since ARR's Hindi album "Highway" has released today, not many will care about these albums till they satisfy themselves heavily with "Highway". :p

Pretty much yes! But most mass hero films these days are similar - they show the hero as a supreme human and just feed off his screen presence.

Watched "Biriyani". Must say, hugely surprised that this movie did not get great reviews (though must say, its a hit film). ABSOLUTELY ENJOYED IT!! Semma fun... Typical Venkat Prabu film with good doses of comedy, action and thrill. Karthi is very good, and Premji is a riot as usual. The twist in the end was completely unexpected, and well done to VP for keeping it that way. Songs except "Nah Nah Nah" didn't work out well. But the screenplay and the direction stands out as good as any Venkat Prabu film.

To me, this is equal to Mankatha. Mankatha had more mass celebratory scenes due to Ajith's screen presence. But as a whole film, Biriyani is as good.

4/5

Finally got time to watch Veeram. I did not like it personally but Ajith did a great job. Santhanam's comedies were okay. I would rate it 2/5 (1.5 for THALA, 0.5 for Santhanam).
