In recent times, Kallis is well deserved of his ranking. If he were to build a record better than Lara's what would you say then?
Past 20 matches...
J H Kallis 35 innings 11 50s 9 100s, 2184 @ 80.89
R Dravid 31 innings 9 50s 5 100s, 1944 @ 74.77
By contrast
B C Lara 36 innings 5 50s 9 100s 2384 @ 68.11
R T Ponting 37 innings 7 50s 4 100s 1848 @ 59.61
Inzamam-Ul-Haq 35 innings 8 50s 6 100s 1691 @ 56.37
S R Tendulkar 33 innings 7 50s 3 100s, 1423 @ 50.82
Now of course the interesting thing is that not everyone manages 20 matches in the same amount of time. Both Tendulkar and Inzamam go back to 2002 for their 20th most recent Test. Lara, Ponting and Dravid all date back to the later stages of 2003, while Kallis has managed 20 matches in 2004 and 2005 alone. So from a second perspective, Kallis is not only the best performing batsmen of the past couple of years, he is also turning up to more games, hence he is extra reliable.
I always marvel at the value of accumulative players such as Dravid or Kallis, versus aggressors like Lara or Ponting. Especially Lara, compared with either Kallis or Dravid, he's done effectively the same job, but scores a fair bit quicker. On average 30% quicker, in fact.
In the end, once you realise that all good batsmen are over-rated, it becomes much easier to discuss their value. Some guys can squeeze runs from the greenest or dustiest pitches, while others frequently rip a game apart in a matter of hours. It doesn't necessarily mean you should put them on a pedastal forever.
