Test Your Internet Speed

Universities usually have a limit on their wifi speed that's why. Auckland has a limit of 128 kbit/s I think. But the computers have speeds of 20mbit/s I think.

This is mine:

Hub's playing up a bit though, so might be faster when the new one arrives.

Sweet Jesus, Virgin Media's fast! How much do you pay for that, Maney?

Edit: Goes up and down a bit as well - it can go as high as 4mb/s.

That was mine with BT.

Now, I'm with Sky and the DLM period ended today.

I am more than happy with this. :)

Edit: BT never went to 4mbps with that Speedtest, it was with the Firefox plugin which, going by the reading I've done, is inaccurate. Proof of the pudding is in the eating: with BT, files downloaded at an average of 200kbps - it was often less than that, occasionally getting to 400kbps. With Sky, it averages over 500kbps. :happy

Just found out today that U-verse had been charging me $55/month for god knows how long for the 12 mbps connection whereas that had become the price for the 18 mbps connection. So I went ahead and upgraded for free... :)

Look at all you people with proper quick broadband. I'm still deciding which ISP to switch to but in NZ they're all rubbish.

What you guys do with such speed? I feel that my 60kbps download speed is really fast.:p

I'm no computer whizz but I smell something fishy!

It says 1.14Mb/s download speed but when I download things it's like 20kb/s, if that. I feel like I'm being ripped off.

Well the Mb/s is Megabits and the KB/s is Kilobytes. There are 8 bits in a byte, which means in a best case scenario you should be getting 145KB/s download. You're probably downloading from slow servers or using something such as BitTorrent which is typically throttled by ISPs.

Yeah I'm in Leeds. I'm with Sky Broadband Connect which apparently offers a maximum of 8mb download speeds. I have a speed estimate from Sky which says my max is 4mb. It costs ?17 a month which seems like a rip off.

Aren't you in the Sky Broadband Unlimited coverage? If you're not sure, give them a ring - if you have Sky TV already, you can get Sky BB Unlimited for ?12.50 a month - if you add calls, I think it drops to less than a tenner. Either way, with 1mbps d/l, you should be getting faster speed than 20kbps - that's worse than dialup - something's wrong there.

Ours is ?10 for unlimited. :P

Mani, is that test done wirelessly or through an ethernet cable? If it's an ethernet cable, how long is it and do you know what type it is? If it doesn't say Cat-5e on it, then you should go and get some Cat-5e cable. If those results are wireless, then log on to your router, you can do so from this page.

http://www.skyuser.co.uk/forum/sky-router/772-sky-router-setup-configuration.html

Go to the wireless settings option and change the Channel to something different, keep doing so until you get good results (if you can) and change the Mode to Performance. (I think it's 54g Performance)

Have you tried rebooting the router?

I'm using wireless. Thanks very much, I'll try that. Yeah I've rebooted the router before a few times when the internet kept on cutting out.
