The Apple Thread

3. Sai, the back camera on the iPod Touch can only take VGA quality pictures (960x720 = 0.7 megapixels). Comparatively, iPhone 4 has a 5-megapixel camera. So just one thing to keep in mind--the still camera in the iPod Touch is not the same--it's of much lower quality.

Yes, I read that on the Amazon reviews for this new thing. Very disappointed! Probably Apple wants their iPhone 4 sales to remain high enough. Cant believe they would include a VGA camera on their iTouch in these times.

This SOB got an apple shoved up his crack. Until someone gets it out, he will come up with more crap like this. Look at his face! I hate it!!!

The Apple TV will never take off in the numbers that every other product has, but it'll still generate sales. Being bitter about a company who make so much money per year is ridiculous, those with a problem with Apple are obviously in the minority.

On a side note, Apple TV = totally useless in the UK. Apple's map of the world consists of the USA and Canada - Sea - More Sea - Asia. Thats it.

People are talking as if the aTV was just released. its been out forever now, and has been pretty useless always. It WAS about as good as frontrow on the mac but they have made some improvements here. I was hoping for iOS interegation, that might have made it worthwhile, but I guess that is strictly for mobile devices.

Got my iPod Touch 4 delivered today. The device is pretty slick and a massive upgrade over my 1G. The retina display doesn't seem like a huge feature but it just gives a nice polish on the device. Haven't played out with the camera too much, but the faster processor and extended battery life has me won.

Only bad part about it is iTunes. I had to restore the iPod like 5 times on FIRST RUN. It ended up working when I didn't rename the iPod from it's default "sohum's iPod" name. iTunes blows. Thankfully the device is good enough that I won't be too frustrated by iTunes--which I will only use once or twice to load up the songs the first time, anyway.

Bumpzors, and changed the thread name so we can have a dedicated thread.

Apple announced iLife '11 and OSX lion today. And the 'one more thing' was the new Apple Macbook Air.

Unibody design, multitouch trackpad, SSD only, and a 11.6" model. Starts at $999.

I think it looks pretty damn good. I'm digging the 11 incher even though it'll be way too small for me I feel. If I had a lot of disposable income/traveled a lot I would totally look into one.

Followed the live video stream today and all I have to say is a resounding meh. The Macbook Air has always been a very niche purchase which is why it didn't really take off the first time around.

The improvements in OS X Lion that I can recall were:

- "Mission Control"
- Mac App Store
- iLife 11
- Full screen apps (!!)

In short, not a very huge list of upgrades. I guess if you use iLife you may be happy with some of the features like "hot new slideshows" (oh my) amongst the list of features demoed. Mission Control looks like a logical extension to Expose and in the demonstration today, the touchscreen gestures frequently did not work as expected.

Mac App Store is really the biggest thing here, as they are trying to bring the App idea into the OS X system. Personally, I don't think it will work as well as Apple hope, but it will work better than it would on Windows, for example, because they have such a small number of developers and apps.

All in all, this looks like it's going to be priced as a snoreworthy $30 upgrade to Snow Leopard and dedicated Mac fanboys will once again come out and parade about how cheap Lion is compared to Windows 7.

Lion is $49 to upgrade from SL.

It may be a niche product, but I think Apple has hit the ball out of the park with the new MBA. The pricepoint is pretty aggressive, especially for Apple standards. Frequent travelers will be all over it. The 11.6 looks like a fantastic form factor, plus is quick and speedy. I think the white Macbook will be phased out as so many people will opt for either the MBA or the 13" MBP.

It didn't take off because it was priced at $1800, lol.

I thought $49 was the upgrade for iLife '11.

Yep you're right... they haven't announced the Lion price yet.

Hopefully this should be released before June-July...that's when I plan on picking up an MBP. Those should hopefully get a spec bump of some sort too...

App store will work for Apple because of its users. ;)

Yeah, I'm not very impressed with the MBA to be honest, although I will admit that it is priced quite aggressively and that might allow it to succeed. Looking at a comparable Sony Vaio Z Series (although the Z is equipped with a real processor--the Core i5 mobile):

CTO VPCZ1390X
Processor: Core i5-460M 2.53GHz
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1066MHz
HDD: 128GBx2 SSD
$2199 + taxes

MBA 13.1 inch
Processor: Core 2 Duo 2.13GHz
RAM: 4GB DDR3 1066MHz
HDD: 256GB SSD
$1799 + taxes

Almost a $400 difference there, which is more than the difference in price of the processors. Of course, even MacBook users may not be impressed with the processor speed since it's the same processor at a lower clock speed.

Overall, the price is going to make this an interesting sell and is likely going to result in a lot of potential MB users purchasing this instead.

You Forgot the launchpad (Apple - Mac OS X Lion)

Launchpad. A home for your apps.

The Launchpad gives you instant access to your apps ? iPad style. Just click the Launchpad icon in your Dock. Your open windows fade away, replaced by an elegant, full-screen display of all the apps on your Mac.

THe launchpad might be cause of a trademark infrigment because launchpad is a registered trademark of the Canonical
