I've seen plenty of openers come from outside the sub continent and embarrass themselves in India. Matt Renshaw held his own and completely looked the part at a pretty young age. Haseeb Hameed is another chap. I'll wait for Bancroft to do something like that for him to be labelled as Renshaw's equal.
He is being given his chance so let's see competition for every place is only a good thing.

You may have ended up shattering the morale of a young batsman. Chopping and changing creates uncertainty and insecurities in squads. I mean Australia are raving about their selectors choices but frankly, everyone knew they would win at home. Maxwell made a century, got dropped as did Renshaw. When do you draw a line and allow people to express themselves without fear or insecurity?

Exactly what’s the point of Moeen Ali playing if he’s not bowling on a 5th day track?

Root and Malan have bowled more. This is the point I was trying to make. What did England have to lose had they played Crane?

What an awful pitch this. Nothing in it for positive, flowing strokeplay or for bowlers. This isn't an one-off either, MCG has been dishing up rubbish pitches of late. The kind of play we've seen this game must be a huge put-off to any young fans who turned up/tuned in to watch the game.

On another note, how on earth does Smith have a control percentage of 94 after 269 balls on this pitch? Sounds absurd.

You could argue at least it went the whole five days... ? Will interest in the final test dwindle and the match play out at an empty SCG.

just my prediction on the SCG Test .....it will be another dead track like MCG
also there picking Ashton Agar so two spinners

this time of year where got hot and steamy weather around so its going to be rain affected match
first two days it will be packed (crowd) and high scoring ....then turn for the spinners (hard to score)
last day only people there ... Barmy Army and a couple of security guys watching a draw

I think the answer here is twofold, (a) he doesn't have the experience of Moeen Ali and (b) doesn't provide anything substantial with the bat - which is a worry now that England's lower order haven't been able to accumulate runs like at home.

Why Australia not picked Chad Sayers instead of Jackson Bird?

Good point Kumbis
I think the selectors will pick two spinners for SCG Test and stick with Bird or
mitchell starc
u might see him on the upcoming South Africa tour if more of our bowlers get injuries

More worrying signs for England heading into ODI series with Stokes withdrawn - and Ali looks off colour.

Agar and Lyon both will play in SCG Test.
Starc already ruled out & Bird need to fly more.

But its very Chad end of the year for SAD Sayers.

England must pick Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid.

If starc isn't fit for the final test agar will come in for bird. I think this is Bancrofts last chance to perform or we will see the return of Renshaw. Khawaja, I was never fond of because of his laziness and lack of ability to score runs anywhere else besides Australia (even looking shaky at home now). If Starc is fit and plays I can only see cummins coming out of the 11 to make way for starc and hazlewood with the pace and Lyon and agar with the spinProbable XI for the 5th Test
