That is, without doubt, the worst poll I've ever seen. I mean, Smith and Ganguly, what the?
And cricket_lover, I don't know if you could fairly say that Lara takes it 'statistically' over Sobers, the average is generally the most reliable in telling the tale, and the latter has the higher one.....
But milestones/statistical records become unbelievably irrelevant over time, because if you did use them as a mechanism for comparison, Kallis would be almost as good as Sobers, if not better....

well, average is not the only way to judge a player is it?
Lara faced a different attack, and was in a team that was in doldrums. He scored bulk of runs for the team, led the team (in terms of batting). I don't know much about Sobers (though i've seen two documentaries on him) and many people consider him the greatest cricketer.

Also
Viv Richards averages 50.xx in tests, but i'm sure he's much better player than others who have an avg. over 50. Its just not one or two stats you look at, but the team he is in, he played against, and the conditions/situations.

Yeah, I know, but I was referring to your recent comment about records, and the average would be the most reliable ''statistical source'' when comparing players from different eras as it measures the consistency of the individual. It's blatantly obvious that there are millions of other factors that determine the success of players and in turn see it to be almost stupid when comparing players. Their team environment, success as a unit, conditions played in, attacks faced, influences, situations, mentality concerning how cricket was played at the time, etc, all define how an individual performs, but I wasn't referring to that area when replying to you.

Way to bump a 1 and a half year old thread. :happy

 (Following Tom's path in General Chat). :)

Shoosh Sean, just let him spam his way to 1000 and he will calm down:p

We've all done it:spy

I meet Gary Sobers once back in 2000, and got my picture with him too. What an absolute legend! Got to go with him.

By the way, you missed a LOT of players in your list.

Bumping a thread isn't a problem, unless you break the rules in doing so.

WHAT!

This is a disgrace to cricket!

A)why the hell is Graeme Smith in the poll? He is rubbish.

and

B)Why have 6 people voted for him?

Oh dear.

Anyway, I guess the winner should be Brian Lara, but I've never been a fun of him, because I NEVER saw a whole innings of his where he scored 100. I'm sorry, i admit it, I've seen him bat a lot, but 95%of the times he batted me made under 30. I'm a big fan of Hayden, his class, David Gower was lovely too.

Graeme Smith is a excellent player as a left hander very demolishing when hes on form but he sertainly isn't the best...
Id go with Brian Lara

Ganguly and Smith should not be in the list. Hayden should have been there instead. Hes combined the player Ganguly and Smith are.

Anyways LARA has no competition.
