A huge total from Sri Lanka had India on the backfoot. Chasing 340 in an ODI is never easy, irrespective of the track. Knowing this in mind, the Indian Openers, Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag came out to bat.
It was very important for the Indians to get a good start. An early wicket was the last the wanted. The Sri Lankans also knew that a wicket in the first 4 to 5 overs would be gold for them. The new ball was shared by Nuwan Kulasekara and Dilhara Fernando. Fernando started off with a good first over giving just 3 runs. Kulasekara couldn't control the runs. Sehwag was looking in an attacking mood today and it was understandable as the target to chase was a huge one of 340. But, Sachin couldn't implement the early attacks technique too well. Just in the third over, he gave an easy catch to Upul Tharanga. That was a huge blow for the Indians. The score then was 14 with the loss of 1 wicket.
Gautam Gambhir was sent to join in Virender Sehwag. This pair is well known for their flawless co - ordination. Will they be able to live up to their expectations was the question in everyone's mind. But Fernando was charged up, looking to cement his place in the side. He soon sent back Gambhir as well. Again a good catch by Tharanga and Gambhir has to depart. This was terrible for the Indians, whereas the Lankans, especially Fernando were over the moon. India was struggling at 21 for the loss of 2 wickets, with Sehwag still at the crease.
The in form youngster Suresh Raina came to share the crease along with Virender Sehwag. The loss of two wickets didn't seem to bothering Sehwag, as he continued with his shots. Suresh Raina to joined in. It was looking as the Indian innings was getting back on track. But, it was the experience of Muttiah Muralitharan which paid off for the Sri Lankans. The 19 runs partnership was soon broken by Murali, picking up Raina. This was truly amazing on the part of the Lankans, but for the Indians, it was like the worse thing which could happen. 40 for the loss of 3 wickets in 9 odd overs chasing a target of 340 was terrible. Exactly 300 runs more required with 7 wickets in hand. There was still some hope for India as Sehwag was looking good. He was on 27 when Suresh Raina departed.
Captain cool, MS Dhoni came out in the middle. A lot was expected from him in such a tight situation. Dhoni has often rescued India earlier in such conditions, and once again, the entire nation was expecting yet another heroic from him. But it seemed that Dhoni had lost his cool. He was trying to send the ball out of the park from the first delivery itself. Surely that wouldn't be possible against a strong bowling unit like Sri Lanka. And that's what exactly happened. Dhoni couldn't execute the plans well and was dismissed on just 3. A beutiful delivery from Mendis deceived Dhoni. The captain seemed clueless. All he could do is walk back to the pavillion. India was struggling on 52 for 4 with Sehwag still there on 33.
The all rounder Ravindra Jadeja just came for formalities. He came, faced two deliveries of Ajantha Mendis and on the third one, gave a catch to Muralitharan. Jadeja departed for a DUCK. India is in a terrible position now, 52 for 5. The match seems to be getting one sided now.
The turbanator Harbhajan Singh came in. He is well known for short cameos with his bat, will he do one today as well? He was supporting Sehwag well as Sehwag took the toll of the bowlers of Sri Lanka. Finally, a good partnership was being developed. In the meantime, Sehwag reached his half century of 59 deliveries. This knock is certainly one of the bests from him considering the circumstances. It isn't really easy to keep it cool and play in a sensible manner when wickets are just flowing like water from the other end. Harbhajan on the other hand was just trying to spend some time at the crease. Even Virender Sehwag wasn't playing as he usually plays. He generally has a strike rate of more than 100 whatever may be the format, but today, it wasn't. It was understandable. A good partnership of 64 runs between Harbhajan and Sehwag was broken as Harbhajan gave an easy catch to Nuwan Kulasekara of Ajantha Mendis. Bhajji did the maximum he could. He departed on 15 from 21 deliveries with the team's score being 116 for 6 after 23 overs with Sehwag still playing on 77.
The tail was now exposed. Praveen Kumar came in to join Virender Sehwag. Like Harbhajan, even Praveen Kumar just tried to stay at the crease. He was doing that pretty well. On the other hand, Sehwag suddenly raced out into his 90s. A century in such a situation would be great. But, he got dismissed. Not Sehwag, but Praveen Kumar. :P
Praveen Kumar couldn't stay for too long as he departed on 8. The score now was 144 for 7 with Sehwag on 92 of 106 deliveries. Sehwag struck a huge six on 86. All know how this guy likes to reach the milestones!
Zaheer Khan was sent out. He was absolutley slow throughout his innings. Ofcourse he knew that target was quite far and the main aim was to support Viru to help him score yet another ton. It was the Sri Lankan hero for the day, Dilshan who was given the ball. Zaheer looked rock solid, just defending the deliveries. On the other hand, Sehwag struck a ferocious boundary over the covers in 97 to complete his ton. What a player! A pitch where never batsman was able to stay, it was this man who rose up to the ocassion. Certainly, the best one from Sehwag ever. A good little partnership of 28 runs was broken as Mendis dismissed Zaheer on 8. The score now was 172 for 8 after 35 odd overs.
Pragyan Ojha came in. Ojha too was on the backfoot trying to defend each and everything. He soon got bowled by Muralitharan. What a superb delivery from Murali. Ojha had left the ball alone as it came back and brushed to off stump. Ojha had to depart. India's score was 177 for the loss of 9 wickets, with Sehwag still out on 111.
The match was almost done for the Indians. Just one wicket was remaining, and the last batsman Ashish Nehra came to the crease to join the OPENER, Virender Sehwag! Ashish Nehra was looking brave. He was slashing, smashing and hitting the ball as if he had gone mad. The madness paid off as a partnership of 38 developed between Sehwag and Nehra with Nehra's contribution of 27! That was something remarkable. Nehra was dismissed by Fernando, giving a catch to Mahela Jaywardene. The entire team was dismissed on 215 in 45.3 overs with the opener, Virender Sehwag staying not out on 121.
It was truly amazing to watch Sehwag bat today. He was the one who faced the first delivery and remained not out till the end. All he could do is see the wickets fall from the other end. It was a shame for the Indians as nobody could support Virender Sehwag well.
Also, the three match series is now won by Sri Lanka who lead 2-0. The third match is just a formality now. Sri Lanka would be looking to test their benchstrength. However, it will be interesting to see how the Indians prepare for the third match! Post Match Presentation Ceremony to follow next.
