27 people are missing in one of our South Island mines, which exploded yesterday afternoon.
They still haven't been able to start rescue efforts, due to a possibility that the air inside the mine will be unsafe for the rescuers. (I think something along those lines)
I hope they all get out safely, best wishes to the rescue efforts down there.

You can read more details here.

Yea was reading about it, also did you know China averages 3000 mining deaths a year!

I was sat there thinking how people could be killed by fake boxes and men wearing black and white suits. Then I realised I'd made a slight mistake with the ole reading.

Second mine blast, no survivors

There was a second explosion today.
No chance of any survivors.
Condolences to all the families, and the West Coast community.

Yeah, even though I have no relations evening living in the South Island, it's always sad when something like this happens.

I guess we'll never know if there were actually any survivors after the first explosion.

Like you said, my best wishes to all the families who've lost loved ones.

Originally reports said 27, I think there were two guys down there who weren't actually mining, more surveying, so they might not have been originally counted.
I stand corrected though.

tbf hundreds die in mining accidents every month. China averages 3000 mining deaths a year. If we discussed all of them, it would never stop.

Does anyone know what I was on about here? I have no idea at all. I don't even remember posting it and its not really at a time where I'd be plastered.

Ah, I see. Still don't remember posting it though so I presume I wasn't sober.

It's slightly different in the fact that we're a country of 4.2 million, while China are a country of 1.3 billion.
