The Next Generation - An Australian Story [ICC III]

The past year for the Australian cricket team can be described best using one word, dominant. A 5-0 Ashes victory over the second best test side in the world and a World Cup victory that gave them their third title in a row is one way to assure your place in history.

But now times are changing for cricket in Australia. Despite winning back the Ashes and winning the World Cup in the West Indies the departure of Langer, Martyn, McGrath and Warne as well as coach John Buchanan had left a major hole in Australian cricket not seen since the 1980’s and could do just as much damage. Tim Nielsen has taken over the reigns and many contenders have appeared from the domestic scene to fill the holes. Shaun Tait after his stellar performance at the World Cup is a good prospect to get into the Test side and just the thought of Lee and Tait taking over from the old L&T combo Lillee and Thomson is just mouthwatering for any selector. Justin Langer’s protégé Chris Rogers looks build to replace him at the top of the order but Phil Jaques could fill the role very well if given an opportunity.

22536 runs and 1959 wickets worth of international cricketing experience gone leaves a new generation of stars are beginning to shine with a lot of expectation. Will the Australian team be able to hold onto the number 1 title in both the ODI and Test rankings? Only time will tell.

Squad announced for the First Test

In a surprise move the Australian selectors have named a 14-man squad before the 1st Test against Sri Lanka. With so many spots on the line the squad has been extended until the conditions are read and the final make up of the side is announced.

Both Chris Rogers and Phil Jaques are competing for the openers role with Shane Watson being an outside chance for the position. Watson is more likely to be playing at 6 if the selectors chose to go with both Tait and Lee but if this isn?t the case Andrew Symonds will most likely be chosen in the middle order. The extra pace bowling slot will be between swing bowler Ben Hilfenhaus and fast bowler Shaun Tait. Tait is expected to be given the go ahead after recovering from an elbow injury and with his World Cup efforts in the back of the selectors minds.

The final XI will be determined on the day of the match with no domestic games during the time period
