The PlanetCricket Battrick Sledging Thread

Im not liking the idea of returning to the old system. The whole idea of the new system is to give long term goals and achievement, which a knockout doesn't do. Some potential ideas based on the current system are:

1) Play each team once only, halves the season length straight away and seems sensible. The 22 + 2 week league becomes 11+2, much better
2) Make smaller leagues, but more of them. Again, we get through seasons quicker

If we were to keep the current system then only one of those is necessary. If we want a seperate cup competition then we might need both.
Having just a knockout seems like a bad idea, to me

I think if that were to come in, the league would realistically need to be shortened. It would make the whole PC season span a lot longer, potentially 3 Battrick seasons which is pretty much a full year. Long time for new teams to wait?

I'm potentially thinking of going back to the old system, small groups of 4 followed them by knock outs etc, like a Champions League format, because the league system to me is taking too long and is very long and drawn out, whereas that system would be shorter and would allow the smaller teams a fair bite at the nail.

At the moment its just a case of throwing ideas on the board, nothing will be decided as of yet.
I like a champions league idea, with seedings perhaps, as much as it would involve a spanking for sides like mine it would make people get more interested in how people are getting on outside of their league too which can only be good. Anything that shortens the current league seems like a good idea to me provided the rubbish sides like mine get chances to win some games still.

I agree with Spin that league's are better than knockout's, teams should be rewarded for consistent performances, it's be a shame if the best team loses because his guys failed to perform in just 1 match.

How about modelling the Battrick system, with 1 top league, 2 under that, and so on (not necissarily getting bigger at each stage - maybe 1,2,2,2). You could have 6 or 8 teams in each league (6 would get through faster, and you'd probably get through a season 1 BT season - room for cup at the start, 12 games, gives a bit more leeway.) Playoffs for promotion if there's room, and quicker seasons without abandoning the league system. Staright leagues (like the English football seasons) are limiting because it takes much longer for teams to work their way up, while with parallel leagues you end up with the best teams at the top much faster.

Yeah.

Right, if all the teams posted up (45) merge to form one big PC competition I think it would be much better. 45 is simply too many for a league format judging by the old format, many teams seemed to get sick of playing it out in the lower leagues knowing they wont have much chance of because the teams coming down are more than likely going straight back up etc.

That format was a bit unfair on the smaller, not as strong teams. We need something that gives these smaller teams a chance to compete and a chance to actually play some games. Zorax's idea I like because it does give everyone a fair shout. We tried the ranking system, id like to bring that back.

The idea I propose just to begin with will go in a Champions Leauge format, now many of you might complain but dont worry, this will not be the format we continually use, this is just a test format I have always wanted to try.

The numbers dont add up to do this at the moment though. It needs to be a number that in the end will boil down to just 2 teams remaining.

so, 16, 32, 64 etc

32 is more realistic than 64, but with 45 teams currently on the list, something needs to be done about that. Any ideas?

We could actively search for another 5 teams to make it 50, which should also work with my idea. Or maybe it could be adapted to work for 48 teams, which is a bit more realistic.
Best to see again after the Shield is over.

Well I dont want us to be just waiting around for the shield to end, thats 29 teams waiting around for a 14 team tournament to end. Seems unfair, id rather we got something started with the 30 who are free and then combine the two after.

We need 1 more team!

If you want the rankings doing then I will start that up again with one of my complicated systems which takes absolutely everything into account :p

I am disappointed that we are getting rid of the Championship format, it always seemed the best way to do it, but as you have promised we will change it then fine. We have used the CL format though, the Battrick League 06 competition was identicle, groups of 4 followed by knockout

why not have a poll on it?
Id rather get a collective group of opinions and then try and combine as many ideas as possible into one format if possible.

Like I said, this format will not be permanent, so for those who are not fans of it, dont worry.

I have come up with a system that is for 48 teams and can lasts 11 weeks.

This system means everyone will at least play 8 games and upto 11.

To start with teams are randomly assigned to one of eight groups (1-8) each consisting of six teams. Everyone then plays each other once. The top 2 teams go into the A cup, the middle 2 teams go into the B cup, and the bottom 2 go into the C cup (A being the most prestigous). This means sixteen teams in each cup.

Teams in each respective cup will then be placed into one of four groups (a-d) each consisting of four teams. Everyone plays each other once. From here the top 2 from each cup go into the quater finals and from there it is a knockout format.

Hows that?? Having 3 cups should hopefully encourage all teams to keep fighting to win games.

I don't mind the long format but having shorter leagues seasons imo is better. Some people (me included) have mates they would like to play and some in friendly cups. If we have shorter seasons, chances are the Cup or BT20 won't get in the way of things. Seasons of maximum 14 weeks would give all teams a fair go and quite a few games without having way too many. Maybe we should have smaller leagues.

Just a few suggestions...

Very impressive idea! I'll look into that.
