The Road to Test Status

netherlands_players_celebrate_after_scoring_the_wi_2076024517.jpg

Following recent results in international cricket, queries over test status have begun to emerge. While Bangladesh struggle in the test arena, Ireland continue to dominate in associate cricket and compete well with, and register occasional victories against Full Members. The Irish have they have hit a "glass ceiling" and perhaps have a good case for test status. Additionally, Netherlands famously beat England in the Twenty20 World Cup and more recently beat Bangladesh, and will hope for test status in the future as well.

Also, Kenya have an established past which includes victories over West Indies and Sri Lanka, and a famous 2003 World Cup semi final, where they seemed on the brink of Test status, although since then they have diminished somewhat. It is also worth noting the improvements of other nations Scotland and Canada. So who will win the race to become the 11th Test nation?

We will be following the Dutch quest to achieve their goal to become...the 11th Test nation.

Good luck dude:thumbs. Netherlands is one of a good team, which din't get enough opportunities to play against test playing teams. I'm sure they're gonna do it once they start playing few tournaments against countries like Bangladesh, Pakistan & West Indies.

Netherlands look for consolation win in final Intercontinental Cup match

114607.jpg

The Dutch team head for a short tour of Ireland, which begins with the three-day Intercontinental Cup match. They don't have any chance of qualifying for the final, after losing four times, and claiming just the one draw against Canada. However, this has masked some narrow, battling defeats to Afghanistan and Scotland. "We have had some good moments in this longer version of the game, but unless we keep it together for the whole game will won't prove successful at this level or any," explained skipper Peter Borren.

They come up against an Irish side which have proved solid at this level, although they are yet to register a win in this competition, but are in with a shout with three games left. Borren warned against the challenge ahead, "We are determined to put things right in this competition, but the Irish are a strong outfit, and will come at us hard on home soil, as they have plenty to play for. The two European sides also play in two ODI's afterwards, both in the aftermarth of impressive victories over Bangladesh. ten Doeschate and Kervezee are unavailable due to injury and county duty respectively, although others will be ready for selection for the short tour.

Aug 11-14 - ICC Intercontinental Cup - Ireland vs Netherlands - Rathmines, Dublin
Aug 16 - 1st ODI - Ireland vs Netherlands - Clontaf, Dublin

Wicket tumble on Day 1 as Dutch take control

11th ? 14th August 2010 ICC Intercontinental Cup: Netherlands v Ireland at Raithmines: Netherlands won toss and fielded first

Day One

120749.jpg

With nothing but pride to play for Netherlands, and all to play for the Irish, the burden of pressure seemed to play on the Irish, who were missing several first team players to county duty, early on in proceedings. After being put in on a lively, seamer-friendly pitch, the opening bowling partners of Jonkman and Westdijk caused plenty of problems for Poynter and Carroll. It was the latter of the two who rode his luck, being dropped in the slips twice and caught behind off a no ball. It seemed the Dutch would rue these missed opportunities, but it was Berend Westdijk, who finally got the first wicket, with a ball which nipped through bat and bat to knock over Carroll?s leg stump. Like buses, it was with the consecutive ball, Poynter fell in the next over to Jonkman, driving to skipper Borren in the covers as the Irish struggled at 12 for 2. Thinus Fourie tried to stage a counter-attack but he was undone by another good length delivery from Westdijk, edging to a sprawling Baressi behind the stumps to leave the Irish wobbling at 31 for 3. It could have been worse if Cusack hadn?t been dropped twice in Nijman?s first over. Cusack and White appeared to be constructing a recovery, but Nijman grabbed a deserved wicket as deceived White with a full ball that failed to swing which went through the gate to knock back his middle stump. The only resistance came from Cusack, but when he edged Borren to Szwarczynski at second slip, at 76-5, Ireland were in a desperate situation. This only got worse when Nijman bowled the batsman Botha with the perfect delivery, an in-swinger on a good length that curved in to hit the top of off stump. Ireland were limping to lunch, and in the penultimate over before the break, Cooper tempted an edge out of McCallan which was caught behind. Netherlands were in a dominant position with Ireland at 94-7 at lunch after an enthralling, and perhaps, a surprising session of cricket.

129005.jpg

Things didn?t improve after lunch for the Irish, as Jonkman knocked over Connell?s leg stump with the fourth ball after the interval. Greg Thompson did help push the score past 100, but his skipper, Johnston was bowled by an excellent yorker from Jonkman, leaving them 108-9 and on the brink. Greg Thompson was the only the third batsman to reach double figures but the innings closed when he edged Jonkman to Statham at slip to give him his fourth wicket with Ireland skittled out for 109. The Dutch reply was patient but not without any blips. After, pulling Botha for six, Statham misjudged a ball from West and left alone a ball which swung in to knock the top of off-stump, Netherlands 15 for 1. Then, Ireland seemed to be finding a way back into the match when West knocked over Zuiderant?s off peg, to leave them 25 for 2. However, any Irish fightback was extinguished by Szwarczynski and the arrival of a more aggressive Cooper. With patience to punish any bad balls, the pair put on an unbeaten 64 before tea, wearing away any pressure, with Cooper nearing his half century, and the Dutch in control at 89-2.

128783.jpg

But the Irish fought back immediately after the tea break, Thompson?s leg spin caught an advancing Szwarczynski lbw advancing down the pitch to a full straight delivery, and with the next ball, Barresi was lbw too in almost carven copy style. Cooper pushed the total into triple figures, and his own score past fifty, with a huge six over mid on. However, the South Australian?s seemingly destined course to triple figures was halted by a dubious lbw decision form Thompson, as it appeared to miss leg stump. The Irish didn?t care as they had claimed the crucial wicket leaving the Dutch 105 for 5. Netherlands edged past the Irish total, but the skipper Borren edged a drive to Carroll at first slip off Botha, and Thompson forced a similar edge from van Bunge to provide more catching practice for Carroll, after he was dropped by the wicket keeper two balls before. Netherlands seven down with only a slender lead of 10. The lead hadn?t grown much more when Buurman was somewhat unfortunate to get out to Botha as he bottom edged a pull shot which rolled off his body and onto his stumps, the Dutch collapsing to 127 for 8. Nijman and Westdijk both put up some resistance, putting on 24 for the ninth wicket; to increase the lead tentatively, put the introduction led him knocking over the off stump for the third time in the day to dismiss Westdijk with the score on 151. Nijman then launched an assault on the Irish bowling, smashing five fours and two sixes, racing to his half century off 37 balls. His cameo was ended by West for his fourth wicket, caught lbw, but not before he had singlehandedly rocketed the score up to 189, a now very useful lead of 80. It was a tough small batting for the Irish openers to bat out, which wasn?t devoid of any casualties, as Poynter was bowled by a perfect outswinger from Jonkman, leaving them one down and still 65 runs adrift. Carroll and Cusack closed out a tough period to close on 24 for 1, to end an extraordinary day where 21 wickets fell and where Netherlands were on top.

Ireland: 109ao (37 overs) (Cusack 33 (39), Jonkman 4-27, Nijman 2-29, Westdijk 2-39) & 24 -1 (Carroll 11 (33), Jonkman 1-9)
Netherlands: 189ao (41.5 overs) (Nijman 54 (46), Cooper 53 (66), West 4-39, Thompson 4-40, Botha 2-44)

actually, Irtish were underprivileged with the bat. and Dutch were ameliorate than them. Batting should have been better. it's better than them but they should have posted something like 250 minimum. Jonkman was extraordinary with the bowl. and Nijman with Cooper played well with bat.

Good writing mate. :)

Plenty of wickets fallen in the opening day. Surely either team's set batsman should have attempted to stay at the wicket. I feel Szwarczynsk and Barresi's dismissals (advancing down the wicket) were not required in the situation. Credit should be given to the seamers, Jonkman particularly as he took the opening wickets and set the Irish on the back foot aswell as taking the early wicket before the close of play.

Ireland's game plan should be to bat out the full day, playing conservative cricket in the process and attempt for some of the batsman to convert their starts into big scores.

Irish batting folds to Jonkman as Dutch complete a speedy empathatic win

11th – 14th August 2010 ICC Intercontinental Cup: Netherlands v Ireland at Raithmines: Netherlands won toss and fielded first

Day Two

128969.jpg

After the procession of wickets yesterday, Ireland would need to put up some resistance to stay in the game, or at the very least, extend the match into a third or fourth day. Nevertheless, as Carroll edged to Zuiderant in the slips fourth ball of the day off Jonkman, the second day appeared to be continuing in the same vain as the first. However, Fourie and Cusack put up some resistance to push the score past fifty. Normal service had resumed when Cusack played onto Nijman for 22 and the score on 54, still 26 behind. This triggered a middle order collapse, Fourie was caught behind driving, and then McCallan fell the very next ball in “action replay like” style, both to Nijman. Then in the next over, White was bowled by a Jonkman outswinger, and with the next ball, Thompson was also bowled by a good length ball that hit the top of middle stump. Both Jonkman and Nijman were now on hatricks on another extraordinary morning. The hatrick proved elusive for both bowlers, but now Ireland were in disarray at 65 for 7, struggling to even make the Dutch bat again. There was only the briefest of rest bites as Jonkman yorked Connell, and then deceived the skipper Johnston with a slower ball to bowl him too, to give the fast bowler his sixth wicket of the innings and his tenth in the match. With the next over, Nijman cleaned up the tailender West for, to give him his fourth wicket, and bowling out Ireland for only 75, winning the game in just over an hour’s play on the second day, by an innings and 5 runs.

Ireland: 109ao (37 overs) (Cusack 33 (39), Jonkman 4-27, Nijman 2-29, Westdijk 2-39) & 75ao (27.4overs) (Cusack 23 (37), Jonkman 6-28, Nijman 4-27)

Netherlands: 189ao (41.5 overs) (Nijman 54 (46), Cooper 53(66), West 4-39, Thompson 4-40, Botha 2-44)

Netherlands win by an Innings and 5 runs

Borren delighted with Netherlands win

128989.jpg

After an dominant display against a strong Irish team, Dutch skipper, Peter Borren, was understandly happy. "Coming to play here against a good Irish side, away form home in tough conditions, I couldn't be more delighted with the result, especially the way we bowled. The way Jonkman bowled was of test quality in my opinion in this match. We could have improved on aspects, we dropped a few catches, and we missed a chance to really dominate with the bat, playing some silly shots and collapsed really. It's only thanks to the efforts of Cooper and Nijman we aren't out there batting again and it could have been closer. Having said that, it was one of the toughest pitches I've seen in a while, which did give advantage to the bowlers."

rathmines2.jpg

In other news, an ICC pitch inspector will be analysing the pitch at Raithmines, as 30 wickets fell in a little over a day's play, and question marks may be raised over whether other international matches will be played at the in the near future. The two ODIs takes place at a more batsmen friendly Clontaf, also in Dublin, with the Irish welcoming back Surrey's Gary Wilson. The forecast is good for the first ODI, but the second make have rain interuptions.

Cooper helps Netherlands post mammoth target

16th August 2010 1st ODI: Netherlands v Ireland at Clontaf: Ireland won toss and fielded first

129378.jpg

After a humiliating defeat within two days in the Intercontinental Cup, Ireland sought revenge in the first of two ODI’s against the boys in Orange. Unlike the pitch at Raithmines, the Clontaf pitch also in the Irish capital was much more favourable to batting. Despite this, when Trent Johnston won the toss, he put the Dutch into bat. Tom de Grooth got the innings off to a flier, hitting four boundaries and a six, in a quickfire 25, before he was well caught on the legside by Kidd off West with the score on 33. Nonetheless, although the Irish restricted the Dutch soon after, Szwarczynski, supported by Zuiderant, started take advantage of the bowling powerplay after a patient start to push up the run rate. After taking the score past 100, Szwarczynski looked set to reach a deserved half century but he fell lbw to Thompson for 48 to end a useful 67 run partnership. But this led to the introduction of Tom Cooper to join Zuiderant at the crease.

The pair didn’t disappoint, both playing some glorious shots helped by indifferent Irish bowling who began looking increasingly desperate and expensive, as the run rate began to steadily rise, starting to veer towards six an over as they passed the half way mark. Zuiderant passed fifty hitting nine fours in the process and his partner Cooper was looking ominously dominant too on this good batting track. Past the 30 over mark, the pair consolidated more and they were restricted by the tight medium pace of Botha. Nonetheless, after being dropped twice guilt-edgily, Cooper reached an entertaining half century at just under a run-a-ball with a lofted on-drive. That shot in the process, took the partnership past the century mark, and additionally the team total past 200 in just the 38th over.

Zuiderant seemed to be patiently moving onto his own triple figure mark, but he drove Thompson tamely to McCallan at silly mid off, ending a well constructed 79 off 108 balls containing 11 fours, but at 212 for 3, the Dutch had a good platform with 10 overs left. Barresi entered the fray with a brief cameo which included two sixes, off Thompson and Johnston respectively, before the latter got his revenge when he chipped a catch to McCallan at mid on trying to repeat the feat for 14. However, Cooper plundered on, including smashing the 44th over by Thompson for 15 and passing the 250 mark in the process.

Meanwhile at the other end, Johnston picked up his second wicket bowling van Bunge for 2, thanks to an inside edge. Nonetheless, Cooper was not to be denied his century, going onto full attack, he rallied to the landmark thanks to 16 off Regan West’s penultimate over to reach three figures off just 92 balls which included 12 fours and 4 sixes. The Oranje were finished however, Borren smashed 4 fours and a six in an 11 ball 25 to aid a 57 run partnership for the 6th wicket off just 26 balls with Cooper. The skipper Borren edged behind to Wilson off West but the damage had already been done with 20 off that over alone and the score already past 300.

Andre Botha bowled a relatively decent final over where he finally got the wicket he of all the Irish bowlers deserved, as Cooper’s excellent innings came to a close when he was caught by Kidd for 116 off 99 balls, which included 15 fours and 4 sixes. Buurman did pull the penultimate ball over deep midwicket’s head for six, but Botha finished with a dot, scant consolation in a final score of 324-7. In the last ten overs 112 runs were scored, resulting in the Netherlands setting their highest ODI total, and a commanding total at that for any side.

Netherlands: 324-7 (50 overs) (Cooper 116 (99), Zuiderant 79 (109), Szwarczynski 46 (53), Johnston 2-53, Thompson 2-67, West 2-85)

That is going to be very tough to chase. Cooper with a great century. Anyway, a good start to the story and has been a good read.

It's quite huge target for the Ireland. Dutch are in comfort, even though after losing the toss. Cooper was superlative from the front and either Zuiderant and Szwarczynski were exuberant as well. the most abominable bowling from the bowlers for Ireland. and I don't think that there will chase down this huge target.

Good upgrade, your presentation is excellent. :)

Ireland run out of steam and are put in a spin

16th August 2010 1st ODI: Netherlands v Ireland at Clontaf: Ireland won toss and fielded first

129541.jpg

In face of this stiff target, Ireland began tentatively and things couldn’t have got off to a worse start when Poynter, after dispatching Nijman for six, fell to a beauty of an off swinger two balls later from the same bowler to leave them 8 for 1 and already dropping behind the rate. However, Cusack and Carroll arrested this slide and brought the hosts back into the game. The pair began to take advantage of the powerplay, scoring boundaries all around the wicket. Carroll took particular liking to the bowling, racing to 50 off 48 balls with 6 fours and 3 maximums, which included 15 off the skipper Borren’s over and by this point, in the 14th over, the Irish were back in contention, up at over 6 runs per over, and with the required rate. However it was the introduction of spin from Raja that halted their charge, taking a wicket with his fourth ball, dismissing Cusack for 27 off 35 balls as he drove to Zuiderant at silly mid off who took a good reaction catch. It ended a whirlwind partnership of 81 off 72 balls for the 2nd wicket. Wilson joined Carroll to push the score past 100 in just the 16th over but he only enjoyed a brief cameo as Borren enticed his edge for Buurman to take a good diving catch to dismiss him for 13 off 12, leaving Ireland 108 for 3.

Carroll was meanwhile threatening a one man assault on the target, smashing many maximums including 17 off Cooper’s first over. Nonetheless, White was caught lbw to van Bunge for 8 to leave Ireland 140 for 4 as the spinners turned the screw and stopped the run flow from here on in. McCallan was caught behind off van Bunge for 2, and then Cooper exacted revenge on Carroll claiming his crucial scalp as he chipped to Raja at silly mid on who took a great catch, for an entertaining 81 off 84 balls which included 7 fours and 6 sixes. Once he departed and Botha had Botha caught behind for a duck, Ireland had not just fallen behind the run rate, they had fallen to 149 for 7, losing 4 wickets for 9 runs.

Ireland were now batting for pride, requiring 8 an over with only 3 wickets and 20 overs left. Kidd put on the bulk of a 27 run 8th wicket partnership, but Kidd was unfortunate to play on for 20 off 19, leaving the Irish on the brink at 176 for 8. Johnston and Thompson pushed the score past 200, Thompson blitzing the expensive Cooper for another 17, but the introduction of Nijman cleaned up the tail. His first ball back into the attack swung late to catch Thompson lbw for 19, and with the final ball of the over, he yorked West for a duck to wrap an emphatic win, with the Irish finishing their innings 15 overs early and 122 runs short. The Oranje looked strong in a so far dominant tour of Ireland, where their hosts had so far been disappointing and leaving a lot of work to do ahead of their final game.

Ireland: 202ao (35 overs) (Carroll 81 (84), Cusack 27 (35), van Bunge 3-32, Nijman 3-37, Cooper 2-48)

Netherlands win by 122 runs
M.O.M.: Tom Cooper
