New Zealand were probably off to their worst possible starts being 70/5 at one stage as it looked they won't be able to play their 50 overs. Craig McMillan along with Adam Parore put on 102 runs for the 6th wicket stand. Parore missed out on his half century by 10 runs while McMillan went on to score 86. New Zealand finished with 204/8 in their 50 overs. Not the best of scores but possibly a fighting total after being reduced to 70/5. Muttiah Muralitharan's magical bowling once again looked top-notch as he took 3/28 in his 10 overs. Eric Upashantha who was brought in the side for Wickramasinghe also took 2/28 from his 8 overs

Steve Waugh scored a brilliant century but his team have fallen short by 49 runs! Adam Gilchrist really struggled to get his timing right but just when he was taking the game away from the Indians he suffered from severe cramps and could hardly run. However, with increasing run-rate he forced himself to take those quick runs and eventually twisted his ankle. He got run-out on 99 as he missed out on his century by 1 run. Robin Singh bowled an extremely economical spell as he got 1/37 from his 10 overs. Ajit Agarkar and Anil Kumble got figures of 1/41 & 1/47 in their 10 overs respectively. Skipper Azharuddin also rolled his arm over considering 60 runs were required of the last over.
