*How do you rate your team's chances in this tournament, Vaughan?

We have a very exciting team, probably one of the top teams of this tournament! We have been used to the Twenty20 format of cricket and we are very confident that we can seriously challenge for the new ultimate cricket title!

*Ricky Ponting questioned the need for this tournament! What do you think?

Well, its each one's own opinion! I for one, welcome this tournament with open hands. It would give an opportunity for the players to compete against each other in a new format which has been a hit so far with the audience!

WEST INDIES ARRIVE IN MELBOURNE

West Indies who are going to face Australia in the opening match of this tournament, also sounded confident about their chances in the tournament! Captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul spoke to the press about the team's chances and about his own squad

*Do you think West Indies stand a chance in this tournament?

Why not? We have lot of hard hitting batsmen like Gayle, Brian Lara, Sarwan, Powell, etc and we are not totally alien to this new format of the game! We are confident we can provide a very tough fight to the other nations!

*You have been made the permanent captain thereby taking over from Lara! Do you think you can work wonders with this team with Lara still in it?

Definitely! Lara is a very good mate! We enjoy playing together! And the boys have lot of respect for me! I am sure they would not be having any problems playing under me! And there is always Brian to guide me!

Indian and Sri Lankan squads arrive at Melbourne!

INDIAN CAPTAIN DRAVID CAUTIOUS ABOUT TEAM!

7_5_2005_Dravid17.jpg

The new Indian squad led by Rahul Dravid has arrived for the Twenty20 World Championship, at Melbourne. Dravid who just took over the reigns from Saurav Ganguly spoke with more caution to the press when asked about the rift and disunity among the team members!

*How do you view India's chances in the tournament after all that has happened recently?

I believe that nothing seriously wrong has happened! And whatever has happened, is in past tense! We have to look forward to the future and I am sure the boys have put everything to the dust bin!

We are optimistic of being strong contenders in this tournament! We hope to return back home with the glittering trophy in our hands!

*Your thoughts on coach, Greg Chappell and his influence on the team?

Chappell has been a very helpful coach who gives a lot of importance to discpline, fitness and regimen! He makes sure every player goes through the right method and gets himself ready for the situation! He has been a stickler to discpline and that is his strength!

*How do you feel after being given a longer run in the captaincy by the selectors?

To have good planning, you need a longer term! But the team is not going to perform any differently just because I or Saurav are captains! In the end, its the team's collective effort that gets it success! I dont worry about who the captain is, but as long as I am the captain, I need to ensure that I do the job to the best of my capabilities!

ATAPATTU SPEAKS TO THE MEDIA!

Atapattu spoke to the press after reachin Melbourne airport! Some of his team mates are due to arrive in the next few hours due to a flight delay in Sri Lanka!

*How do you see Sri Lanka's chances of winning this tournament?

Very optimistic of winning this one! Sri Lanka are ranked No.2 in world ODI cricket! We have a very good record in ODIs and this is an even shorter form of ODI and we should be good at it. We have practiced for a few games in this format and that should stand us in good stead!

*Jayasuriya seems to be going through his last days? Have you ever thought about a replacement for him?

Jayasuriya is still very much with us! He has been thinking a lot about his future and we have asked to stop thinking about it and start focussing on the tournament ahead! Replacing him is never easy in world cricket and we hope to utilise him as long as he is available!

Stephen Fleming spoke to the media just before the first match of the tournament against West Indies!

*Do you think New Zealand stand a chance of winning?

Why not? We have the best players in the squad. We are not a team of superstars but a team of highly skilled players who can do the job for us! We hope to win this tournament!

*How do rate this tournament? Are you excited playing in it?

I echo the words of Ponting! 20-20 is a form of cricket that doesnt offer you too much opportunities to display your skills! 50 overs cricket was a better form of entertainment, yet it had more skills to display! This one sadly doesnt offer too many! Yet, we are determined to give our best and hopefully win it!

Match 1 - New Zealand vs West Indies

Lets start with Match 1 of the tournament featuring New Zealand and the West Indies teams! New Zealand start as favorites for winning this match but West Indies have been strengthened by the top players of their squad and would be in with almost as much of a chance as New Zealand!

West Indies win the toss and elect to bat first!

Summary of West Indian innings:

West Indies score 159 for the loss of 9 wickets at the end of 20 overs! Brian Charles Lara, top scored for the West Indies with a quickfire 40 and was ably supported by Chanderpaul who scored 31. Wavell Hinds and Chris Gayle chipped in with useful 25 and 23 respectively!

For New Zealand, the star bowler was Daniel Vettori who picked up 2/11 from his 2 overs! Ian Butler, though more expensive, also picked up 2 wickets for 33 runs in his 4 overs!

It is a very respectable score in the end for the West Indies who can now look to defend this target against the New Zealand batsmen! West Indies have given themselves a good chance of winning this match with a very plucky batting display! New Zealand on the other hand, should keep the required run rate in mind when they come out to bat! A few good overs can totally shift this game in the favor of the Windies!

Lara interviewed during the break!

Lara interviewed during the interval break

Lara, who hit a superb 40 off 21 balls today studded with nine fours was interviewed by Dean Jones during the interval break of the match! Here is what he had to say

Dean Jones: Congragulations on a very good innings today! What did you have for breakfast today?

Brian Lara: Thanks! Actually, it was a good wicket to bat on and the ball was coming well onto the bat! The ground was small and it was easier to find the boundary!

Dean Jones: It was a good support act from Chanderpaul, but did you feel you were a few runs short today?

Brian Lara: I think we were 10-20 more runs short but we have a great opportunity to beat New Zealand today! 20-20 games are about restriction and if we can restrict them from going over the top, then we have a good chance of winning this one!

go the prince. lara will definatly be the key if the windies want to get anywhere in this competition. lovely start to the story sai
